FROM THE RE:
Summer is in full swing and we have had a full agenda of events in May
and June. It is that time of the year where schedules are hectic and there is
often too many things to do and you fi nd yourself searching for a few hours
to put your feet up and chill out. In May and June there is always much to
do about graduations: grade school, high school, college, and even SCCA
Driver’s School. Our Road Racing and Solo programs conducted driver’s
schools in May and June and I feel it is timely to acknowledge the efforts
of our instructors and staff. These individuals, led by chief instructor Alan
Dunklee, take a sincere interest in teaching new drivers skills and attitudes to
help them better enjoy SCCA and the sport of motor-racing. I would like to
congratulate the following graduates from our two road racing schools this
year: Reid Allen, Anthony Autiello, John Baroody, Joseph Boruch, Wayne
Dixon, John Dolnier Kim Estep, David Primus, Aaron Sawitsky, Sandy Stevens
and Guil Twiss. I would also like to congratulate the 54 driver drivers who completed our Solo
Novice School and all the staff who made this event a huge success!
In my previous column I made a strong “pitch”
about membership growth and involvement.
The Board of Directors set a goal to bring
in 100 new members to the New England
Region. Our Membership Chairman, Paul
Krysiak, has reported that we are making
good progress toward this goal, but we
are not there yet and need to keep working
on this during our “peak” season. This is a
shared goal in which all NER members play
Over 50 new to Solo Students took
advantage of the Solo school held at Ft.
an important role and who can earn benefi ts
Devens on June 3. Photo: Eddie Savage
from SCCA’s New Member Referral Program.
I have been reminded by some of the other Directors that it is not just membership numbers,
it’s about involvement and this is a good point. Member involvement is certainly measure of
our club’s “vital signs”. Instead of temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate,
you could say that Road Racing, Solo, Rally-X and Rally as our “vital signs”. For most of us,
our involvement is predominantly aligned with one of these programs and this involvement is
understandably subject to fl uctuations. Nevertheless, twice a year our club gets a “physical”
where we measure of club’s “vital signs”. One of these examinations occurs at RAL (Racing
Against Leukemia) Weekend (Aug 4-6, this year) at New
Hampshire Motorspeedway where all our programs (RR, Solo,
Speak My Mind ...............................................4 Rally and Rally-X) compete in unison and raise money for the
fi ght against cancer. The other examination where we can
assess our club’s “vital signs” occurs in January at our Annual
4 PIT TALK
By Jon Lamkins
Big Racing Weekends
Starting with NASCAR All Star weekend in May
and ending with Le Mans in June, we’ve seen
some big racing events in a span of a month.
Here are my thoughts
NASCAR All Star Race
I’ve stated it before and I’ll state it again: Why
do they call it an All Star race? These teams
race against each other every weekend. The
only difference is the format and the lack of
back markers.
That being said, many fans seem disappointed
with the format (and lack of wrecks that were
promoted from the start of the season in
February). Personally, I liked it. The short 20
lap segments kept the pack relatively intact and
led to some good racing.
Which is bigger:
Monaco, Indy, or Charlotte?
In between the All Star race and Memorial Day
weekend, I was reading through the NASCAR
message forum on espn.com and one topic was
which was going to be bigger/better/greater
the following weekend: the Coke 600 or Indy.
My response: While the Coke 600 may be
more relevant and watched in today’s 2012
world, if you consider history into the formula,
I would rank the weekend’s events as: Indy,
Monaco GP, World 600 from highest to lowest
importance. The fi rst response to my comments
was (paraphrased): If it weren’t for history
Indy and Monaco wouldn’t even be running.
While I wanted to respond: I’ll bet your car
has a bumper sticker reading “If you ain’t a
NASCAR fan, you ain’t s@#t”, I refrained and
merely thought it to myself along with: “You are
ignorant seek culture”
IRL at Belle Isle: Let’s just put this event in
the past and learn from it.
Le Mans: Pretty much
what everyone expected.
Audi dominates with
Toyota trying to make it
a show with a car that’s
never raced before.
And once again, we
have a horrifi c accident
involving a gentleman
racer in a Ferrari turning
into an overtaking LMP1
(one of the Toyota’s this
year. The question was
raised about why let these
gentlemen who have less
experience/talent race with the professional
drivers? And the answer was: Money. These
guys have a passion for racing and the funds to
form a team. If it weren’t them the fi elds would
be embarrassingly small. My only advice:
Maybe they should be in a Porsche because
the Ferrari’s seem to have a huge blind spot in
the right rear.
IRL at Milwaukee: Always great to see
Indy cars at the historic Milwaukee Mile. It’s
always interesting to see these fast, sleek cars
doing their version of short track racing. Now
if only the IRL offi cials could learn how to
interpret their own rule book.
NASCAR at Michigan: Who could have
predicted such fast speeds which led to another
tire-gate. The race itself featured more cautions
than usual (which I’m sure the fans loved) and
it wasn’t a fuel mileage race. Oh yeah, Dale
Jr broke his losing streak with a dominating
performance, so all is right with Junior nation.
I’m you’re biggest fan.
Speaking of Junior, after the Pocono race
someone on the message board asked
(questioned?) why Junior was so important.
It quickly degraded into mudslinging, name
calling, and questioning of persons manhood,
political allegiance, and USA citizenship status.
Growing up in New England and Connecticut,
where people’s lives and mood revolved
around how goodly or poorly the Red Sox or
Yankees were doing, it seems simple to me.
Every fan has a favorite team. In racing, the
driver represents that team. If our team wins,
we feel good. If our team loses, we feel bad.
A psychologist might say that we are living our
sports fantasies out through our favorite teams.
As to why Dale Jr has so many more fans than
other drivers, I’ll go back to the Red Sox and
Yankees then throw in the Dallas Cowboys.
Even non fans of baseball and football know
who these teams are. They are high profi le
teams. The same goes for Dale Jr. Like it or not,
everyone knows who he is.
This reminds me of when I was young. My
mother knew I was a motorsports fan. I still
don’t think she understands racing as more
than guys in cars making noise, but even so
she knew two drivers: Richard Petty and Mario
Andretti. So when I was watching or listening
to racing, she asked two questions: “Is Richard
or Mario in it?” and “How are they doing?”

RAL/NER Charities —
2012 Weekend
This year the New England Region Board of Directors formed the NER Charity
Committee with the goal to contribute as much money as possible to
worthwhile charities. The committee is comprised of:
Jody Fisher and Linda Kogan as joint Co-Chairs.
Other members include: Wiley Cox (Solo), Dave Maynard (Road Racing),
Kathy Moody (Rally), Peter Perrault (Sound Control) and Danielle Moehring
(the young woman for whom RAL was founded).
The NER BOD and the Charity Committee have agreed to change the name
Racing Against Leukemia or RAL to RAL / NER Charities and to support
multiple charities. Our one fund raising weekend this year, will be Aug.
4-5 th at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Along with the name change we are happy to announce that this year we
have added a second worthwhile charity to the weekend.
Far too many of us have experienced the life altering effects of breast cancer
fi rsthand or through a loved one.
In 2007, shortly after my friend Laura was diagnosed with metastasized
breast cancer, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. In
Aug. that year, my step-sister Jeri was diagnosed with infl ammatory breast
cancer. Since then four good friends (2 of them local members of SCCA,
Jean & Heidi) were also diagnosed with the disease. Laura lost her fi ght in
Jan. 2010, but the rest of us are still fi ghting. So in the hope of “fi nding a
cure in our lifetime” the money raised from this year’s Raffl e Ticket sales will
be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), which uses
90% of all donations for research
and awareness. We will also be
selling breast cancer stickers and
beer cozy’s at $5 each for this
cause.
To help save a child’s life from
Leukemia please donate directly
to UMass Memorial Foundation.
More information is available at
www.fi rstgiving.com/ummf/nerrace including a video of Jody and Danielle
in the UMass research lab.
We will be repeating the much in demand thrill of Hot Laps at $20 for 2 fast
laps during Sat. lunch break and possibly Sun. as well. This money
will go to Leukemia Research.
There will also be track rides (if time is available) at the end of racing
on Sat. for $5. Money will go to Leukemia.
During the weekend, in the spirit of friendly competition, we will be
having a contest to see which group (Rally, Road Racing or Solo) can
collect the most money selling RAL decals for Leukemia. Bragging
rights to the winner, or maybe a special trophy!
Thank you and hope to see you at the Track in August!
Hi ! My name is Danielle Moehring and I welcome
you to a fantastic weekend of Racing against
Leukemia.
I was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1989 at 3 years
of age and was treated at UMass Medical Center
in Worcester Massachusetts and Boston’s Children’s
Hospital.
Members of Yankee Sports Car Club along with
COM, SCCA and Indoor Model Racing as well as
Polar Racing raised money in my time of need. It
was decided by my family that this money be used
for Leukemia research and bone marrow donor
recruiting. RAL (Racing Against Leukemia) was
formed in the winter of 1990 by the dedicated efforts
of SCCA New England Region drivers Ed Funk,
Ed Warkulewicz, Eric Strobe and AMA motorcycle
racer John Crowley along with my father Manfred
Moehring to benefi t childhood Leukemia research at
UMass Medical Center.
I am now cured of Leukemia and graduated from
college in 2009 with a biology degree and currently
working for Seven Hills Foundation of Worcester, MA
supporting mentally disabled adults.
RAL is geared toward raising funds for UMass
Medical Center in hope of fi nding a cure for
childhood cancer.
Thank you to all who are
attending and special thanks
for all who have worked over
the years for the continued
success of RAL weekends.
Good luck and may the drivers
be protected. May you all be
blessed this weekend and days
to come. Please feel free during
the weekend to talk to me or ask me questions, or if
you would like, you may contact me through email
PIT TALK June/July 2012 5

First, let us at Pit Talk apologize for
any instances of induced déjà vu.
Though, what with Dario Franchitti
again winning the Indianapolis
500, a total of fi ve “real” Trans-Am
cars again racing at Lime Rock, and
Maurizio Cerasoli’s Porsche again
spontaneously combusting at New
Hampshire Motor Speedway, our
mistakenly attaching most of the fi rst
“T.A.H.-Dah” to the end of
last issue’s article certainly fi t
a theme. We hope you will
appreciate a piece that is
shorter than a short story this
time around.
Those who want to get out on
track to start corner working or
have just recently started may
have a lot to learn from quite a
different operation at the track.
I’m writing from experience,
which I would not have had
in the fi rst place if not for the
inconvenient rule keeping me
off the corners at Lime Rock
as a minor or away from NHMS as someone
without a car. Fortunately, it wasn’t hard to
decide to work from an air-conditioned room
with a great view of the Start/Finish line while
being a part of the backbone of any racing
program – the staff tracking the data about
who’s on what lap in what position.
Writing off timing “tapes”, despite being the
fi rst thing attempted by the fi rst-day volunteer,
was probably the activity that most bolstered
and developed your author’s blue-fl agging
skills. It’s surprising how much can be learned
about an ongoing race of any endurance from
darty (yet focused) eyes, a quick hand, and a
pen on paper. Taping causes one to strive for
earlier and earlier identifi cation of smaller- and
smaller-appearing cars lap after lap after lap.
6 PIT TALK
T.a.H.-dah!
By Trevor Alexander Hermance
A way to train
for one of
the most
techically
challenging
parts of
flagginG...
a field of
SpeMiatas or
Spec Racers
The identifi cation of these cars
entails recognition of their
numbers, “thinking them to
yourself”, and writing them. As
our experienced corner workers
now nodding their heads know,
these are the same things any
volunteer wielding a blue fl ag
should hope to be doing.
The repetition familiarizes
the brain with the order of
cars running in a group
or spaced far apart, and
“foreign” numbers that
have appeared from
elsewhere in the running
order tell a tale (made
complete by a scanner on
the fl aggers’ net, if you
really want the juicy details
on a spin, drive-off, or
car-to-car contact) that a
quick glance at a computer
monitor wouldn’t be able
to show.
This process works especially well in actual
races, but is also a fantastic template to follow
when trying to work a practice or qualifying
session. In a period where drivers may be
running their hot lap or cooling off to fi nd a
gap in the fi eld, the attentive onlooker can still
rely on a mental image of the last few and top
couple of cars just based on how many times
they’ve driven past, starting with their lap out
of pit lane. It’s not counting with numbers, it’s
recognizing patterns.
This foundation seems much better to build
upon rather than trying to blue fl ag for the
fi rst time on station, and additionally makes it
easier to follow races over time as a spectator,
even without trying. If dedicated to Timing,
writing tapes will lead to writing lap charts,
which is an old-school “master running order”
way to track the race with the same skills (also
useful as a Starter). Eventually a worker can
make it to the computer to monitor software,
correct entry errors and print copies, but that
frankly may not be as intense.
Working T&S for only that fi rst year of events
continues to pay off when I’m at a race, and
provides a feeling of involvement with the
contest that a scrolling ticker or scoreboard
can’t provide. The small, dedicated scoring
staff would love you to give it a try; you’ll be
out of the rain for once, and you just might
become a better fl agger.
LOOKIN’ BACK: In reference to the above statement, in the 70’s and 80’s, Formula Ford was the
fl aggers challenge.... here, its the NARRC runoffs in 1999, I count 18 fords, and the camera only
could capture part of the fi eld...Yummy! Photo: Fred Mahler

RE Report
— continued from page 3
and we should not spend money printing
multiple pages of results. This view may not
be shared by all and we welcome input from
the readers. We also encourage members to
provide content in the form of interesting articles
or even “car”toons, if you like. Kudos go out to
Fred Mahler on very nice coverage of our Road
Racing “Rational” event at NHMS in April. We
have struggled to get write-ups on Racing Racing
so his contribution is nice to have.
The Palmer Motorsports Park project is still a
possibility. Fred Ferguson has informed the
BOD that the environmental impact documents
(MEPA) were accepted and there is progress
on his feasibility assessments. The club assured
him that he has our full support and we are
hopeful that things will keep moving forward.
Our treasurer, Lou Gingerella recently provided
us with a mid-year accounting analysis which
indicates that we in a “break-even” situation,
which is pretty good for this time of year.
We had to some large up-front facility (track)
expenditures, and these were off-set with
income from some well-attended events. This
year we asked program comptrollers to provide
Lou with monthly reports on expenses, so we
can follow our fi nances throughout the year
and expedite year-end reporting.
In August our efforts toward 2013 program
planning will ramp up. Road Racing is
looking at ways to enhance its program of
events. Our Solo program relies heavily on
the airport at Devens, MA and continues to
look for other facilities. Like-wise, our Rally-X
program is constantly searching for exciting
terrain. The club is still open to supporting PDX
(performance driving experience) events and
welcomes a “nucleus” of members who are
interested in running an event in 2013.
On the leadership front, I would like to
encourage members with ideas and energy to
consider serving the Board of Directors. We
will be posting nomination forms in the near
future. Also, there are rewarding opportunities
within our Specialty Programs to get involved
and help make things work better. As much as
I harp about volunteering; when I attend events
is see more and more new faces pitching it to
help. If we can continue to look for ways to
effectively spread out the work it will increase
the fun factor and keep the “burn-outs” on the
track and not in our ranks.
See you’all at RAL!!!
Sincerely, Doug Fisher, RE
LEACH, Kevin William
Kevin William Leach, lifelong resident of Glastonbury, beloved husband of Mary
Carneiro, passed away peacefully Thursday (May 3, 2012) at Hartford Hospital. Born
in Hartford, he was the son of William R. Leach, and the late Joanne (Terry) Leach. He
was a graduate of Glastonbury High School. He was a 35 year employee of Pratt &
Whitney. Kevin was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Connecticut Whale and
New York Rangers hockey teams. He loved cars and racing, spending many weekends
at Lime Rock Park and travelling with Mary to races, not only as a course marshal, but
also as a race starter, where he felt very comfortable on the perch. He was a longtime
member of the Sports Car Club of America. Along with his wife Mary and his father,
Bill, Kevin will be fondly remembered by his loving family, two sisters and their spouses,
Shelley J. and Salvatore Guerrera of East Hartford, Beth M. and Andrew LeDuc of
NER RALLY-X
Championship
Event # Three—
8 PIT TALK
By Chris Allen
for
the RXers.
The February 2012 edition of the NER at NED Rallycross was a mild one. Racers could
keep the studded tires in the trailer. This year, New England residents experienced a
serious lack of the white stuff, which hurt ski areas but saved the backs of many folks
who would have been doomed to shovel themselves out. It is pretty unusual to have
bare ground in February in New Hampshire, especially for several days straight. This
was the perfect storm to turn the thin layer of frost and grass into a softer playground
A
few course changes throughout the morning gave some drivers a better chance of
NER @ NED
getting through the course quickly, as wet mud formed shortly after the modifi ed allwheel
drive cars passed through. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the stock front
wheel drive class was taught the art of understeer by Matt Henry in his VW Fox. The
February 4, 2012
car
sported a special exhaust system modifi ed by his co-driver Kathleen Most. Matt placed
fi rst, with a 15 second lead over Marcel Belperron in his Saab 900 turbo. Your humble
reporter managed third place in the crusty-but-trusty green GTI.
Podium fi nishers in stock all-wheel drive were a tightly knit group. Cliff Kangas managed to grab some grip and pull a win over Jacob Perkins in an
Impreza vs. Impreza battle. The ZR2 Chevy of James Caswell fell into third, despite some neck-snapping afternoon runs. Kudos to Perkins for giving
Caswell and Kangas a run for their money thus far this season!
Prepared rear wheel drive was Miata-rized, with Ben Wagstaff, Carolyn Green, and Bryan Mancuso taking fi rst, second, and third respectively
in a shared Mazda Miata. Prepared front wheel drive was owned by Volkswagen. The shared jacked-up Jetta of Marcello Aldorasi taking fi rst,
followed by Massimo Aldorasi. Tim Meunier represented the oil burning VW’s with his TDI Jetta in third. Impressively, Marcello’s total time for the
day was less than two tenths of a second slower than the fastest prepared all-wheel drive time set by Chris Regan in his BMW 325iX. Regan took
fi rst over the father and son duo Nikita and Nikolay Nemchuk, who fi nished second and third respectively.
The modifi ed moniker has had some minor changes this season. One notable difference is the addition of a modifi ed rear wheel drive class.
Nate Cantrell has often been the lone soldier in the group this season, but it’s only a matter of time before someone gets jealous of all the fun he’s
having. Modifi ed Front wheel drive was led by class regular Hal Denham in his yellow GTI, followed very closely by Chang Ho Kim in his Honda
Civic, and Neal Blair, also in a Civic.
In a Fuji Heavy Industries-laden showdown, the all-wheel drive modifi ed class was extremely close by the end of the day. First place was held by
Ryan Wilcox in the ECS Performance Subaru Impreza, but only by less than one tenth of a second ahead of Steve Coppola in his Impreza 2.5rs.
Josh Muise pulled into third behind Coppola by about a half a second overall. Great driving was showcased by all three of them and it really
could’ve been anybody’s race.
Much appreciation to New England Drag way for the use of the facility, and allowing some minor excavation in the premature muddy season.
Be sure to catch the infectious rally cross action when it gets REALLY sloppy at Slip and Slide, also being held at New England Drag way in
March. And fi nally, a great amount of praise goes out to all the volunteers that make this event
possible and keep it running without any glitches!
Steve Frederick was telling us how about a
child he had spotted walking through the
paddock carrying a bright pink toilet seat, a
seat that he apparently now coveted. I tried
to follow his logic as we unloaded boxes of
trophies from the trailer.
“What in the world do you need a pink toilet
seat for?” No matter how I approached it, I
failed to wrap my brain around that concept.
I heaved another box through the door of the
trailer.
“For the special Miata bathroom.” Steve drove
one himself. I wondered briefl y if his toilet
training was in remission.
“For the...wha? Where is that?”
He pointed at the handicap accessible porta
potty located at the head of the paddock row.
“It’s the one with the fl owers stenciled on the
door! I see that kid again, I’m going to offer
him money for it!”
“Oh sweet Jesus in a tuxedo shirt. Leave the
kids alone. You’re going to get arrested.”
I thumped another box down on the ground,
convinced that I had landed in an alternate
universe. Around me, the sky was a brilliant
blue bowl over B paddock, the PA buzzing
as they called students to the tower for the
race school. For a place I had pretty much
grown up in, I hadn’t spent any appreciable
time there in over 5 years. I looked around,
wondering why I had allowed so much
time to go by. Bittersweet memories of past
experiences and events ran through my mind.
I pushed them away: the last thing you need at
Lime Rock is distractions. Like pink toilet seats.
I looked at the boxes of trophies with
satisfaction. This year, the club had added
a hurdle to any driver who placed high
enough to get a trophy: they had to run one
more gauntlet......me. I was fi nding the task
of trophy wench to be surprisingly fulfi lling. I
got to personally greet everyone who won a
trophy.
I chuckled a bit as I recalled some of
my encounters the fi rst couple of events.
“Hungry?” Ed appeared at my elbow,
interrupting my reverie. “Yeah, starved
actually. Let’s head over to the food stand.”
Bites From
Reality
By: Stephanie Funk
My friend’s daughter had taken a summer
job in the paddock concession stand, a fact
that perhaps was playing into my somewhat
introspective mood at the moment. Her mother
and I had worked together in the track offi ce
one memorable summer some 21 years ago
now. Seeing her now 18 year old daughter
working at the track made me feel, well old.
And evil. The way I usually felt these days.
She ran around the counter to greet me,
throwing her arms around me and giving me
a bear hug. I felt an unexpected prickling in
my eyelids at her enthusiasm. After the usual
pleasantries, I asked her what was good at the
stand this season.
“The chicken Caesar salad is like, my
favorite.”
“Ok, I like salads, that works.” She slid the
container across the counter at me. “Oh….
she put a fi nger on her lips. “The grill is off, so
we don’t have any chicken.” I shrugged. “A
plain Caesar is fi ne too.” The last thing anyone
needed at Lime Rock was anything in your
belly that could create an offensive burp as
you crested the uphill.
She rang me up with a big smile and we took
our food to the tables. I popped open the lid.
Chunks of romaine lettuce, seven croutons, 35
sprinkles of parmesan cheese, no dressing. I
went back up to the register. “Hey, can I get
some dressing?”
“Oh sure! Here…” she grabbed a box. “Um,
we’re all out of Caesar dressing, but you can
have whatever you like.”
Ed pushed my hand away as I snagged more
turkey out of his sandwich. “Get your own!”
“Hey, I tried, but all I have is a container
of romaine lettuce. Come on, I need some
protein.”
He muttered something, but I wasn’t listening to
him. I hadn’t been at Lime Rock Park in several
years, a fact that surprised and depressed me
some. A lousy work schedule and the years
buzzing by faster and faster had contributed
to that oversight. I silently vowed not to let it
happen again as I ate my non-Caesar salad
with balsamic dressing and bits of turkey
crumbled on it.
My eyes drifted slowly across the paddock,
memories rife at every spot. The night we
burned down, er, took down the old start fi nish
tower. The day I met, or should say, re-met
Jutso the gate guard. Looking at the point of A
paddock, I fl ashed on a memorable encounter
with Joe Stimola, one that still makes me
chuckle twenty years or more later….
It was a warm, cloudless day like this one
when I steered my old Chevy S10 down the
dusty dirt paddock road. It was Tuesday,
and we had an open practice scheduled for
that afternoon. I saw Joe Stimola standing
by the edge of his paddock spot, fi ddling
with some sort of box in his hand. For those
who never met him, you missed out on a real
character, one with a heart of gold, and a
wizard at formula cars. He was also funny and
irreverent, all the qualities I like in a person.
Slowing, I smiled a greeting at him. He looked
up from his device, which resembled an early
laptop with a radio antennae on the side of it.
“Hey Joe. What’s up?”
He showed me his device. “Check it out!
I just got this weather station so I can jet
the carburetors more accurately! It tells me
temperature, humidity, barometric pressure,
everything I need! It cost fi ve grand, but it’s
going to be worth every penny!”
I eyed his new toy. “You paid fi ve grand for
that?” I snickered. “I can tell you all that for
free.”
“Oh really?” He placed a fi st on his hip. “Go
ahead, Miss Smarty Pants!”
I tilted my head back so the sun washed over
my face. “The temperature right now is 68
degrees.” Sticking my fi nger in my mouth, I
wetted it and held it up in the air. “Winds are
coming from the southeast at 5 to 10 mph.
Summer
School’s Out
Regional
Lime Rock Park, June 9, 2012
By Fred Mahler
After spending the fi rst two events of the 2012 at the New Hampshire
Motor Speedway, NER traveled south for its only race at Lime Rock Park
this year. This was a Friday/Saturday event with the school and regional
qualifying on Friday and NERRC/NARRC point’s races on Saturday.
The school had 13 students including 6 that were signed off and 5 that
raced on Saturday. The drivers were on the track for 6 sessions which
they alternated with regional qualifying. They had dry weather for most of
the day. During the course of the day the stewards simulated all sorts of
things that could happen to them on track. The one thing that they could
not artifi cially create was rain, so Mother Nature helped them with that
and provided a wet track for their last session.
168 drivers posted qualifying times on the regional group side and the
weather was forecast to be very nice for Saturday. If you’ve ever read any
of my past race reports you know that I take what weather folks say in
advance with a grain of salt, so I was not surprised when light rain began
to fall at the morning fl ag meeting.
The rain remained on the very light side as group 1 came out for their
15 lap qualifying race. The track was predominantly dry as the 26 car
SRF/EP/HP race took the green fl ag. SRF drivers Kevin Treffeisen, John
Steinmetz, and James Regan were having a great battle for the overall
lead with each taking turns in the top spot and never more than cars
length apart. The rain began to fall again around lap 10 and when the
leaders came around to complete lap 12, things changed dramatically at
the front. It could have been the damp track or lapped traffi c (or both) I am
not sure, I just looked up to see Treffeisen starting to spin in a big crowd
and cars making contact all around at the exit of the fi nal turn. When it
was over all three of lead cars were in the pits with varies body and or
mechanical damage. Other cars were also involved and the race was
checkered one lap early to help speed up clean up. Lee McNeish who
hadn’t even posted a qualifying time came out on top.
The offi cial points race for group 1 was very different from the mornings
qualifying race. All three of the cars that were involved in the earlier
incident were patched up and ready to go although they would start at
the rear of the SRF pack for the split start (EP and HP would start behind).
This time with a dry track and starting from pole McNeish had no problem
winning, even surviving contact in big bend with 5 laps remaining. In EP
Joe Boruch and Jonathan Leitner had a very tight battle going that was
ultimately decided in Boruch’s favor. Bouch driving his Honda S2000 was
one of the drivers signed off at Friday’s school.
By the time group 2 came out for their qualifying race, the track was
again dry in time for the 31 Spec Miatas. For most of the 15 lap session
Ralle Rookey and Tom Capizzi were locked at the bumper. Exiting big
bend on the fi nal lap the two had a situation which resulted in both
of them spinning off course. Capizzi would go no further and Rookey
continued to fi nish 7 th . This handed the win to Dylan Murcott.
A red fl ag on Lap 2 during the point’s race defi ned the SM’s group
afternoon session. There were 4 broken cars blocking the track between
big bend and the left hander necessitating the stoppage. Once the
remaining cars were allowed back to the pits and put back into their
original starting positions the race was changed to a timed 15 minute
A little Spec Ford action closely monitored by Ms. Funk’s HP Civic,
apparently, they needed ...

session. When the race resumed it was all Dylan Murcott with no other
dramas to the checker.
Group 3 was big bore and the 14 car fi eld stayed pretty static for all three
of their sessions with qualifying being mirrored by the qualifying race and
that mirrored by the fi nal race. There were no real incidents to speak of
as John Branscombe piloted his corvette to an easy victory overall and 1 st
in SPO. Second overall and 1 st in GT-1 was Alan Friedman who was one
second slower per lap. The only real excitement to be had was watching
ITE driver Walter Mavkes peddle his BMW from last on the grid (having
skipped both qualifying and race 1) to 2 nd in class just behind Chuck
Fernandez in his mustang.
Race group number 4 was little a more lively with great battles for both the
overall as well as class wins. When the ITB, ITR, ITS cars took the green
for their qualifying race, pole sitter Robert Breault fell back to fourth on
the damp but drying track. From there he had a good seat to watch an
excellent battle for the overall as well as fi rst in ITS between Tim Dugan,
Matt Fassnacht, and Glenn Lawton who where never more than a few car
lengths apart. Once Breault got himself and his BMW together, he picked
off the three leaders one by one and was soon in the lead where he would
stay to the end. There was just as good of a race for ITB honors as Travis
Washay and Enrik Benazic waged a battle for the class win that lasted
right to the checkered with Travis taking fi rst. The afternoon race for this
group was on a totally dry track and there was more of the same with
Lawton and Breault fi ghting for the overall win. Washay and Benazic also
picked up where they left off in the morning and staged the race of the
day with multiple lead changes per lap with Travis again sqeeking out the
victory in ITB. Meanwhile Breault did manage to take the overall and ITR
win with Lawton grabbing second and the ITS victory.
Race group 5 was for FV, F5, and NCF where 15 cars took the green
with sprinkles in the air for their morning race. There’s not a whole lot to
say about the race. Mike Rand in his Crossle 30f who qualifi ed 2 seconds
faster than anyone else just ran away and hid (not the last time he would
do so today). Colin Lawrence led the FV class home and neither of the
two F5’s made it to the end. The afternoon point’s race for this group was
much livelier. Mike Rand did his vanishing act to claim NCF and overall
honors but behind him there was a fun race for second between Alan
Walker, Christian Penderson, and Jim MacNicholl. The trio swapped the
position back and forth slingshoting down the front straight every lap with
the runner up spot fi nally going to Walker. On the FV side there was just
as good of a battle happening between Lawrence, Dan Grace, and John
Petillo with Colin executing a nice pass going onto big bend on the fi nal
lap to back up his morning win.
Lime Rock Schools Out Regional. —continued from the previous page
Just as a side note it was very cool to see Colin take the FV win. After
fourteen years of racing he got his fi rst win at the last event at NHMS, so
to see him get number two at Lime Rock was awesome. Colin is a local
guy from Winsted, CT (he also went to school with Hummish) and his dad
Barry has fl agged with us in the past. Now living and working in China
Colin does not get to the track as much as he would like, so I am sure that
every win is special.
Race group 6 ITA, IT7, and SSB was the next ones to take to the track.
Their fi rst attempt at a start was waved off for jumpers, however once
under way there were four drivers looking for the top spot overall and in
ITA. Pole man Steven Fredrick, Steve Berry, Brian Blizzard, and from out
of nowhere Gary Hutchinson. Meanwhile in SSB Robert Demers had a
terrible start and dropped like a rock only to fi ght his way back to take
the class lead at halfway (one he would not relinquish). In IT7 Norman
Latulippe jumped out to few car length lead and held that advantage
through out the race just staying ahead of the great second place fi ght
between Lou Iannaccone and Grant McStay (who ended up with the
position in the end). Back at the front it was Frederick who crossed the line
fi rst. The afternoon race saw Latulippe repeat in IT7, but the two guys that
seemed to be having the most fun were Dick Patullo and JB Swan battling
for fourth in class with JB taking the position when Dick’s RX-7 jumped out
of fourth gear on the uphill. Back at the pointy end of the race there was
a very tight fi ght for overall honors between morning’s protagonists steven
Frederick, Brian Blizzard, and Chris Raffaelli who was having a better
run then the AM race. In the end it was Blizzard taking the victory with
Raffaelli second and Frederick third.
Group 7 was for Formula Fast which featured a small fi eld of 8 cars. The
slowest cars in this race group are FF but someone forgot to tell Mike
Rand. Aided by light rain at the start and cautious quicker cars, he jumped
out to a quick lead. On Lap 3 the track went full course caution for an
oil fi re on a car that stopped at station 7. Once we went back to green
Joseph Rodomista in his CSR Ligier JS49 enjoying the now drying track
took over the top spot only to spin off at the left hander when it began to
rain again and gave the lead back to Rand who held it to the fi nish. For
the afternoon race only 5 cars took the green as the lone DSR did not
make it off the grid. With the track dry the higher horsepower cars were
able to come to the fore with Rodomista keeping his car on the pavement
and taking the overall win. Second place on the road and fi rst in FC was
the Jagermeister VanDiemen of Dennis McCarthy. Mike Rand fi nished third
overall and fi rst in FF to cap off a 4 for 4 record for the day. Not bad for
an old guy in an old car (sorry Mike, just saying is all)!
The last race group was also the largest with 33 SSM, SM2, STU, and
STL cars taking the green fl ag on a very wet track for their morning
qualifying race. With all the cars there were battles all over however Jim
Locke took his SM2 Miata to an easy win. Pole sitter Anthony Kalkandis
slid off course in big bend but came back to fi nish fi rst in STU. Group 8
had a dry track for their afternoon point’s race but that did not stop them
from having issues. Right at the start there was a multiple car incident on
the front straight which necessitated a black fl ag all to cleanup. After a
complete restart the qualifying race STU winner Kalkandis drove his 944
turbo to a commanding lead only to slow and hit the pit lane with two
laps remaining. This gave the lead to Chris Jurkiewicz in his STU BMW
325i which he took to the checker closely followed by the STL winner Alan
Daley in his Honda CRX. Ralle Roookey made up for his disappointment in
SM and took the win in SM2.
PIT TALK June/July 2012 17

(photo: Eddie Savage)
Ayer, MA – I like Solo National Tours. It’s
been a while since I turned a steering
wheel on an autocross course,
and when I drove into Devens that
Saturday morning and parked the
car down the end of the pits, I knew
deep down what having fun was all
about. The weather was going to be
superlative for the 2 days, the fi eld
at 210 drivers strong, friends old and
new and from near and far to be greeted and
welcomed with a smile and a handshake, but
here’s a tip: just don’t make acquaintances
with anything named “Tick” that lives out or
around the infi eld.
18 PIT TALK
“So this is what it
feels like to be potato
salad.”
National style events work on a 3 day window,
and Devens sadly has restrictions on Friday
access as well as on overnight activity. Gear
and cars can be left on-site, but we humans
must vacate prior to sundown. Driver check-in
and tech is thus very compressed and hectic
that late Friday afternoon, as well as Saturday
morning, and it can lead to moments of frustration for some when
schedules get backlogged, even if by minutes. We try hard with what
we’re allowed, so please understand a lot goes on in those hours between
5 and 7, and we appreciate your patience and understanding when
coming to Devens for these type of events.
The NER group tapped the 2-day event to also comprise our Points Event
#4 (Saturday) and Points Event #5 (Sunday). This will have our Timing
& Scoring Chief, Jenna Corrales, knee deep in collating and tabulating
data out from the National sheets for a week or more to convert to points
ranking for the NER drivers, so the “double offi cial offi cial” NER local
event points won’t be broken-out until later. So PJ, please don’t bother her
until she’s fi nished...
NER SOLO EVENTS # 4 & 5
BY: EDDIE SAVAGE
For our Novices and those just
“graduated” within a year or so and
this being their fi rst National level
event, Congratulations. You just lived
through several valuable aspects of Solo.
First, more seat time. Second, competing
with top-level talent not only within NER,
but from outside our Region. Third, how a Tour (or
Divisionals or Nationals) are run; see it wasn’t all
that bad now, was it? Fourth, the VALUE of clear
and proper car numbering and lettering. And fi fth,
one or two days of additional points over those
who opted not to enter. Hopefully you will now
poder on thoughts of traveling to a Divisional or
other Tour next year, and think of sharing the trip
with a co-driver you may know, or maybe taking
a son or daughter to help out too. You can cut
your travel costs somewhat and have twice the fun.
Think about it.
So a round of applause for Joanne Ago, Tom
Soja, Jack Nguyen, Chris Brooks, Jojo Corrales,
Dave Fried and Candy Sutherland. Re-read my quote on the masthead; I
hope it gives you a chuckle. If I missed anyone, let me know and I’ll make
amends.
Nate Whipple designed the fl owing layout, and with the site-entry off of
Bishop Road (rather than the usual Main gate), the design was geared to
having the runs going clockwise both days. This allowed a large pit area,
the required A-B grid area, and ample run-off from the fi nish. The course
changes from Saturday to Sunday were enough to add signifi cant “fun
factor” to the runs, and more than a few drivers left with a “I was properly
tested Saturday, and Sunday I got to play...” sentiment. I heard many
high marks given to the layouts. Well done, Nate.
Stories within stories abound at a 2-day event. One can lead handily on
Saturday, and the god of rubber and grip
embraces on you Sunday. The proof is in
the numbers, and spending time looking
over the fi nal results is often a lesson in
persistence and perseverance, resulting in
victory or not. The Solo scene is not without
it’s human side, and Paul “Fleet of Foot and
Spotter Eye” Zahornasky did a very nice
write-up of the event for the ner.org website.
I won’t steal any of his thunder, so please
check it out; it’s well-worth the read. There
are more than enough YouTube video’s of
the event, so anyone can live vicariously
through our NER SCCA Youtube site here:
http://www.youtube.com/nerscca
Tours don’t run themselves, and comprise
workers from the Region proper. Read:
volunteers. This includes admin (I vision the
phone going off on Bob Davis’ nightstand
twice nightly between 11pm and 3am
during that week...can’t you just picture
that ‘look in his eye’), concession, setup,
clean-up, gate, the normal worker jobs at an
event, and specialty tasks for the national
side to name a few. Thoughts of “...so thaaat’s what ‘scanner’ duty is” as
an example.
To those that volunteered for extra duty, did a bit more somewhere, or took
an extra task or bit longer of a shift than they needed to, Thank You. And
to our shift announcers, PZ, Matt Murray, PJ, and whomever the others
were, Thank You, too.
Anyway, lets go to some of the contenders: (note: times are 2-day
combined unless otherwise noted)
One my surprsises was the kart klasses being thinly subscribed. Kimsoo
Gopnik took the lone FJB on a 162.105, while in FJA, Kevin Vincent ran
a 132.488 to win the 5 driver class. Evan Woodsom was second, Adam
Woodsom third, followed by Jessica Arsenault and Jacob Arsenault.
Modifi ed Kart was but 3, with Virginian James Newman taking a
113.806 over Greg Vincent, and to son Timothy Vincent.
The newly offered “RT” classes were nicely subscribed. RTF was taken
by Marshall Cone from Sterling, Virginia in the H-Stock MINI Cooper
112.267. Darn-good Tour announcer and Regional blog-master Paul
Zahornasky took second (HS Mazda 3), with Thomas Soja, Dave Fried
and Christopher Brooks (all just out of Novice school) rounding the class.
JoJo Corrales took the ROTFL class (pun intended). Hauppauge, NY’s
Henry Hoeh used a CS Porsche Boxster in RTR to take the 14 entry fi eld
with a 110.403. Co-driver Rich Wayne was second.
In A-Mod, Bill Goodale and the Dragon took the class from co-driver
Stacey Strout on a 108.714. Bill also took Overall Fastest Time on his
last Sunday run, a 52,249, nipping that
credit from B-Mod’s Will Schamback, who
ran a Sunday best 53.448. C-Mod went
to Josh Parker on a 116.993, but he had
the inglorious distinction of reliving the
olden days when he was driving an old
beater VW with its oft-case of oil-leakage.
Car owner Stacey Strout’s Reynard let go
an oil seal during Josh’s last run, and he
parked in at the Tower section while the
sweet perfume of heated and atomized
10W-40 wafted lazily over the serene
Moore Airfi eld, sending dozens of men
and women mindlessly shuffl ing along
the course in whirling dervish of clayscrubbing
delight. No swimming pool time
for you next weekend Mr. Parker, get thee
to work on repairs!
The aforementioned Will Scamback
took his Cheetah to the win in B-Mod (6
drivers), on an overall 109.732. Over in
Dan Cernese in the ASP Maxda RX-7 (above). Mark Street Mod (9 drivers), Dave White drove
VanDeCarr in the D-Mod Spitfi re.(below) Photos: Eddie Savage
the Nissan 240SX Panda to a win on a
120.698. The SSM crowd had 10 drivers,
led by Jake Namer in the RX-7 coming in
from the New York region. Jake scored a 120.869, descimating the class.
Brian Kuehl was second with Jenna Corrales, third. EP had 6 drivers, but
it was between Allen Kugler from Springtown, PA and NER’s own Brian
Levesque. Allen took that class by an twitch of only 0.077 on a 122.969.
CP was a 5 car bump-mix of CP and F-Stockers, led by Mark Daddio in
the Ford Mustang GT, on a 125.854. Russell Burkhard, using a Sunoco
dark blue and yellow accented Mustang, came within a tenth of the top
spot on a last run gallop. Neil Schelly took FSP, but he wasn’t sure of that
at all on Saturday, seeming to break after 1 run. A bit of head-scratching,
check this and that, and what seemed terminal was just an old Subaru’s
way of saying “Fuel starvation will catch ‘ya when you least expect it”.
Neil came back on Sunday and tallied a 133.600 over Greg Cullen and
Canadian Shawn Gayton.
CSP went to Charles Koulik from Wilkes Barre, PA on a 120.916, with 7
others fi ghting him, among whom where second place fi nisher Bob Davis
and son, Billy, third. BSP was fun to watch from out way by the corner
4 and 5 sections. 8 drivers fi elded the site and the class was taken by
Hank Wallace in the newly fl ared BMW M3 on a 124.555. John Rappa
was second, and Marc Monnar, third, both in the RE-Zelse Mazda RX-8.
Marc kept David Corsaro and his BMW M3 at bay in 4th by only 0.058.
Honorable mention to Liam Dwyer and brother Matt Dwyer in the “My
Garage/Wounded Warrior” Nissan 350z. I’ll let PZ tell the story behind
them in his article, but those guys give one pause to think what makes us
human beings, and a persons endless capacity for going forward when its
all too often easy to give up.
NER RALLY-X
Championship
Event # Five—
Rochester
Fairgrounds
April 21, 2012
20 PIT TALK
By Chris Regan
Fifty intrepid souls made their way to the dusty fairgrounds in Rochester VT for a day of dirtslinging
competition. Warm weather and sunshine put aside any concerns the drivers had
about mud. Instead, clouds of dust were soon drifting across the grounds. Many a corner
worker was seen sporting a bandana as a makeshift dust mask. During lunch, a water truck
was conscripted into service which helped somewhat but the tires soon cut through to dry
ground. The course varied throughout the day, crossing between the grass infi eld and the stone
dust horse track. The mixed surfaces made for challenging transitions and features like fast
slaloms into 90 degree corners. The six runs totaled 7-8 minutes of seat time for each driver.
The Flying Fox of Matthew Henry once again proved unstoppable. Trevor Hermance fought
him valiantly but in the end his three extra cones decided the race. Marcel Belperron piloted
a Saab 900 to third, unable to match the other Stock Front drivers’ pace. In Stock All-wheel
drive, the high ground clearance of James Caswell’s S10 was a formidable sight. The chunky
mud tires made short work of the loose ground and left fi ve Subaru drivers watching with envy.
Cliff Kangas coned himself to second and Jacob Perkins placed third in his wagon. A second
pickup belonging to Scott Beliveau snatched up fourth place, surviving 24 seconds of orange
carnage.
A BMW and Volvo wagon scrapped in Prepared Rear. Hanging the rear ends out in the
the 2012 edition of the Rochester Rally Cross
earned glory and the biggest trophy. German engineering threw up a challenge against
American muscle in Prepared Front. Marcello Aldorasi’s Jetta and Tim Thomas’ Scirocco came
oh so close and yet oh so far from Michael Lodsin’s Neon. Michael was just a bit faster through the corners and took the victory
by half a second at the end of the day.
If stickers make you faster then it was certainly working for Jamie Beliveau. His well-decaled and well-driven 2.5RS was
untouchable all day long. Chris Regan’s plain white 325iX could not match his pace and fell further behind every run. Nikolay
Nemchuk’s WRX suffered a similar lack of bling and had to settle for third. Jamie’s brother Michael rounded out the top four.
Modifi ed Front Wheel drive was a VW 1-2-3. Despite some uncharacteristic cone killing, Hal “Mr. Smooth” Denham put down
some fast times and never looked back. From the looks of it though, he may want to start looking over his shoulder. Scott
Carlson and Phil Lamoreaux’s shared Golf is really coming together. Scott just edged his co-driver out by 6 tenths for second.
The Modifi ed All-wheel Audi A4 left the pack of Subarus panting by the end of the day. Ryan Wilcox’s mean sounding Outback

Springtime Coneage
22 PIT TALK
“There’s nothing wrong with coming
in last place, just don’t let it happen
two years in a row.” -- Lee Iacocca
By Eddie Savage
Ayer, MA – Driving to the 3 rd point’s event of the NER Solo season brings us back to Devens
for an event that often causes calculators to use factorials in overall cone-count. Points event
3, Springtime Coneage, did not disappoint, but at least it wasn’t the most “intensive” cone kill
course we’ve seen so far (yet). 148 drivers entered the fray, and when all was timed and done,
6 runs were had, giving over 900 runs in total with 488 cones tallied. A number of classes
were lone or two entries, so the fi eld was spread out excepting Pro, Novice and a few other
classes which had a good slate of cone combatants to watch.
The day was cool, and started off very overcast. Shortly into fi rst runs the clouds started
breaking up, with the weather turning breezy and mostly sunny for the rest of the day. During
the morning, most people were glad they may have packed a light jacket for comfortability.
Sun block would have been prudent too, as the cool temps gave one cause to forget the
periods of direct sun over the day. No matter; better than rain.
that last pass of his on a 67.428 (Paxed to 53.875) to squeak just 0.118 ahead of Tristan
deBarros in his DS Subaru WRX. Tristan also ran his best on run #6 at 65.766/53.993
and get a “thumbs up” for having nice set of self-made numbers and class letters. Eighteen
of the Rookies ran their best on their fi fth or fi nal run; among them Mike Caporello
3 rd at 66.480/54.580, Derek White 4 th at 67.135/55.117, Drew Corcoran 8 th at
71.334/56.995, and back 0.038 was Jeff Webber staking 9 th at 69.132/57.033. Aleksy
Klavsyuk took 10 th at 69.141/57.248 and Steve Bottsford drove well to 11 th spot in a 1972
Tim Kong and the Honda S2000 between runs.
Chevy Nova with a 66.218/57.344.
Honorable mentions to Jason Reischultz who ran a good fi nal pass in the Altima, but still
fell 0.019 off of 13 th place, and others down in the pack such as Tom Small, Kulin Seth. Eli
Ahrensdorf, Susan Dansereau and Michael Sciotto for going all out on the fi nal run of the day.
The rookies traded minimal cone counts for more DNF’s, probably as a result of being ultraconservative
in the tight and swift slalom on the back taxi-way and an always fun (to some of us
veterans) “Chicago box” just prior to the fi nish. Think of the seconds you threw away…
In RTA, Ken Johnson reversed the ranking from his earlier Devens outing with the WRX, taking
fi rst today from co-driver Andrew Barrette by standing on a third run 58.883 (pax 48.342), just
0.042 quicker. Of note, Andrew’s best time was also staked on his third run, as both drivers
coned away better runs in the p.m. session. Dennis Kois took the “Mid Life Crisis” Mitsubishi Evo
to 3 rd . RTF saw Michael Smith take his Ford Focus to a strong win on a 64.390/51.447 in that
3-car fi eld.
10 drivers drove in RTR, and Barbara Seeger took the win in her ’88 Corvette on a last run
58.729/49.508. Bryan Mancuso took second in the Toyota MR2 on a 60.173/49.823. Darius
Trinka was third in his Nissan 350z.
Pro had 19 entries, and saw fi rst in Pro and Top in all Pax go to Nick Barbato in the Honda
S2000CR. Nick scored a fi nal run of 54.177/45.671, a full seven-tenths quicker than any prior
run. The Barbato-batmobile held the spot by 0.073 from second place driver Eric Chiang and
the G-fab Mazda Miata. Eric posting a fi fth pass best of 55.247/45.744. Heading down the list
in Pro: Billy Davis, PJ Corrales, Grant Reeve, Scott Thursby and Josh “1 cone short of a 6-pack,
but still fewer than my co-driver Ken Hurd” Parker. Josh took Top Raw on his best run, too. Dave
White: 13 cones; Special Trophy for You.
The Kart Krowd was light with only Eric Krueger and son Ian in F125. Eric went to a 52.182 to
Ian’s 54.027. Allison Krueger was a lone entry in JKA with a 63.595, and Kimsoo Gopnik took
the 3 driver JKB fi eld on a 68.507. Hannah Cox was second at 112.806 and May Kimber third
on a 118.005, but plus 1.
SSM saw Don Kuehl stay straight and proper with the Honda CRX-HP and win the 10-driver class
on a 56.051, a solid half-second on second place driver William Salie in the Z06 Corvette. Ben
Albert took SM in his Mitsubishi Evo with a last run 61.608, but honorable mention in that class
to second spot and Jon Funk in his Rally-X Subaru, who had the Subaru engine let go on him 2
weeks later at a Vermont rally-cross. Hope you can get the “Bad Idea” machine back on track
soon.
Chang Ho Kim took STC on a fi fth run 58.320, while carrying 3 cones on a faster fi nal run.
Chang was featured for a snippet or two in the June 14
PIT TALK June/July 2012 23

Springtime coneage Report continued from page 22
C-Prepared (CP) was rather popular years ago, and lean of late, but Phil Mackaronis has
a 1994 Chevy Camaro that entered the class. Phil ran a “need more grip” last pass of
58.200. Over in the stocker ranks, Fedja “Am I considered a Novice?” Jeleskovic ran
to the top in BS in a Mitsubishi Lancer SE on a fourth run 59.706 (what, not on the last
run, Fedja?), dispatching the Subaru WRX STi of Christopher Perry and Jerry Shields.
Jon Zombeck took CS in the Mazda RX-8 with a 64.080, but the star of that class was
Emmanuel Cecchet and the 1969 Corvette Sting Ray in bright yellow, with side pipes.
Wiley “3 GoPro’s are not enough” Cox took his Infi niti G35 to a DS win with a late
morning 59.016, while Kathy Barnes took 2 nd in the Acura ITR, and Jenna “where the
#%&$ did all those cones come from” Corrales, third. (ask Dave White, he may know,…)
Joe Barbato used Mazda Miata power to a win in ES (56.632), and Sam Creasey took
GS (60.248). Paul “PZ” Zahornasky took HS in his Mazda 3, but not without some work,
having coned 4 separate runs in a rare case of too much slip angle somewhere along the
racing line. Paul ran a stellar fi nal run of 61.377 to cement the class win, while PJ Aspesi
was but two-tenths back until Paul’s fi nal blast. Dave Fried carried third for the class.
Josh Noble took ASP, John Rappa a win in BSP, and Rob McAlpine tops in CSP.
Next up is our Solo School for Rookie Drivers, so look for a short run-down on that in this
issue. A tip to our novices, plan ahead and take the school. If you can’t this year, plan for
next year. In fact, plan to take it 2 years in a row. You WILL learn more in a dedicated
day of instruction that you will always carry forward with you. And just 2 weeks following
the school, I hope you can come out to Devens in mid-June (June 16-17) for the 2 day
SCCA Tire-Rack Solo National Tour, New England Edition. Watch the best of the eastern
region drivers go at it and you’ll know why instruction is so valuable to You, your fellow
competitors, and to the sport.
And a shameless shout-out to
the Moncton Motor Sport Club
attendees and friends from
Canada coming down for the Tour!
I hope we give you a good event.
Be seeing you!
New England Region, Sports Car Club of America, Inc.,
Board of Directors Meeting Minutes —
March 14, 2012
The Board of Directors met at the Hampton Inn
Auburn, 736 Southbridge Street, Auburn, MA.
Present were Regional Executive Doug Fisher,
Asst. RE Bill Gendron, Directors Hal Denham,
Trevor Hermance, Pete Morrison, Jerry Rigoli,
Jerry Shields, Chris Regan, Elizabeth Winiarz
and Paul Zahornasky. Also in attendance were
Treasurer Lou Gingerella, Kathy Barnes, Area
One Director Dick Patullo and Jody Fisher.
These minutes may not be in chronological
order.
The meeting was called to order by Doug
Fisher at 7:30 PM.
Motion: to enter Executive Session for
discussion of New Track negotiations, then
return to open session (Denham/Zahornasky)
PASSED
Motion: to accept the minutes of the
February 8th, 2012 BOD meeting. (Regan/
Morrison) PASSED
The NeDiv Roundtable on the following
weekend was mentioned. At least a dozen
NER chief personnel will be in attendance.
Dick Patullo announced a proposed Divisional
RallyCross entry “tax” which our program
leaders should research and have a stance on
for the NeDiv Meeting.
Club Racing Report: Jerry Rigoli assured
the Board that there are personnel in place
to facilitate website postings and event tech
inspections. With Scott Dowd becoming
mostly unavailable, technical questions would
best be referred to those working as chiefs
through the year (Brian Mushnick, Anthony
Parker, Dick Patullo). Tracks are taking
their time with the contracts but our
obligations have been met.
Rally and RallyCross Report:
Chris Regan reported on two successful
events despite unseasonably warm
weather thawing the appealing
winter conditions usually encountered.
Jacob Perkins has volunteered to help
publicize the region’s Rally activities at
different events such as the upcoming
26 PIT TALK
NHMS FANtasy Drive.
Merchandising Report: Donna Stevens
is in the process of stocking apparel, decals
and rule books for the coming season. She
attended “Frost Heaves” rally 3/10 and will
be attending Pre-season Tech 3/31 and the
NHMS “open house” on 4/7.
Solo Report: Solo’s Devens contract has
been signed and paid. The next Solo meeting
for season preparation is March 21.
Membership Report: Kathy Barnes
reported for February 2285 members, a net
increase of 29 over January.
Jody Fisher presented suggestions and receive
ideas on increasing membership participation
and growth. The importance of social
networking invitations and personal interaction
at events, specifi cally for newcomers, was
stressed. On-location liaisons, “concierge”,
and e-mail/phone follow-ups from dedicated
Program liasons may make a huge impact.
The Club Racing program might benefi t from
a modern version of the old “Guest Pass”:
a printable crew “Invite” Page 1 of 2 that a
driver could e-mail to prospective guests. Jody
offered to draft one. This is also a potential
avenue for sponsorship.
NER Marketing Report: Paul Zahornasky
reported that PIT TALK magazine has
distributed its fi rst issue of 2012, and will
continue to be included in Region efforts to
strengthen communication.
as well as a display board for show/event use
and 5000 of the new-edition “Wanna Race?”
bumper stickers. (Zahornasky/Morrison)
PASSED. Approval was given for “petty
cash” scale expenditures for NER trade-show
materials. Paul Zahornasky is also planning to
open a Fed-Ex printing account.
BOD Goals:
The “Barriers to Entry” topic was discussed
with written input available from Rally/Rally-X
and Club Racing. For Solo verbal input was
provided by Kathy Barnes. The main issue
concerned the ability of respective programs
to accommodate “walk-up entries”. For
Club Racing this is not relevant considering
licensing requirements, etc. Rally and Rally-X
rely heavily on pre-registration but have
fl exibility to take “walk-ups”. On the otherhand
Solo requires advanced registration in
order optimize the conduct of their program.
Walk-ups are not allowed for the most part.
The BOD acknowledged the situation, but
requested Solo review their registration policy
for fl exibility, that does not compromise their
event conduct.
The NER Annual Meeting was reviewed.
It was reiterated that The Solo Program
is responsible for the event in 2013 and
is encouraged to break traditional event
format to reinvigorate the worker awards
presentations and discussions.
The Treasurer will be able to provide the BOD
reasonably accurate fi nancial information on
a quarterly basis if from program comptrollers
provide the Treasurer with monthly updates on
income and expenses.
Motion: to adjourn to the meeting
at 10:06 PM (Morrison/Zahornasky)
PASSED
Respectfully submitted,
Trevor Hermance, Secretary
Next meeting will be held on
Kathy Barnes, Paul Krysiak, Area One Director
Dick Patullo, Marilyn Freeman and John
Hoenig.
These minutes may not be in chronological
order.
The meeting was called to order by Doug
Fisher at 7:31 PM.
Mr. Hoenig presented a summary of the
plans for the Thompson facility which could
bring club racing back to the track with a
publicly available (rented) road course being
researched.
Motion: was made to accept the minutes
of the March 14th, 2012 BOD meeting.
(Zahornasky/Regan) PASSED
Motion: After review by Directors, to accept
the executive session minutes of the March
14th, 2012 meeting. (Rigoli/Shields) PASSED
The NeDiv Roundtable meeting was reviewed.
NER was well represented and helped
execute some informative training sessions.
The proposed Divisional RallyCross entry
assessment for a Divisional Championship was
approved.
Lou Gingerella explained that he is happy
with the progress made in the accuracy of
the club’s fi nancial tracking, with the help
of the programs’ reporting. The region’s fi rst
quarter report will be presented to the board
at the May meeting (giving one month’s extra
time to account for the many season start-up
transactions which can pile up and need
organizing).
Secretary Trevor Hermance will be receiving
copies of the Region’s contracts with facilities
rented, signed by the R.E., for archiving.
Club Racing Report: Jerry Rigoli reported
that about 20 cars were processed at the
preseason tech inspections held March
31, and feels a single location or ad-hoc
inspections should be considered for next
year. Pre-registration has been open for the
Rational race weekend, and had 142 entries
as of the meeting.
Rally and RallyCross Report : Chris
Regan reported that there is a possible
RallyCross to be scheduled for May in
Bradford, Vermont. March’s Cape Cod Old
Timers’ Rally was well attended in spite of
some dreary weather.
Solo Report: Bob Davis provided in an
e-mail report to the RE that there was a huge
entry for Saturday’s season opener (April 7)
with an additional karting school held during
the morning. Some timing and scoring glitched
were experienced, but could be excused for
the fi rst event with such participation. Five runs
were still able to be made. Paul Zahornasky
has started a Solo e-mail newsletter for
interested members, “Looking Ahead.”
Some discussion arose of the need for
program leaders to recognize opportunities
to expand Solo (or like activites) beyond the
strong events and longtime regulars that are
found in Ayer and Loudon.
Merchandising Report: Donna Stevens
has received the 50 copies of the March “Get
Started” SportsCar magazine issue.
Membership Report: Paul Krysiak reported
for March 2293 members, a net increase of
51 over January and eight over February.
Jody Fisher’s mock-up of a printable club
racing “crew invite” was presented, and
technicalities that must be observed in any
distribution of such an item were discussed.
The idea remains feasible and will be refi ned.
Motion: was made to accept the program
and specialty reports as presented (Regan/
Zahornasky) PASSED
A letter drafted by attorney James McEwan
with regard to obtaining NER Investments’
deposit on the Purchase and Sale agreement
for the Palmer, Massachusetts track site was
reviewed by the directors.
Motion: made to send the letter as presented
(Denham/Regan) PASSED
The FANTasy Drive “open house” at New
Hampshire Motor Speedway was a nice event
with strong NER representation. It provided
a good chance to interact with potential
members and participants.
Linda Kogan and Jody Fisher will be co-chairs
on the charity committee overseeing RAL
this year, along with any other philanthropic
interests of the region.
Concerning budget policy, Lou Gingerella
is looking for guidance as to where funds
for the board’s “administrative budget” and
Pit Talk production must now come from.
Lou explained that the board must develop
an administrative budget for review and
implementation and volunteered to make a
proposal for one.
A 2012 PIT TALK budget has not yet been
received.
Motion: was made to prohibit production of
the magazine as of May 1 until year-to-date
itemized transactions and a remainder-2012
budget are presented to and reviewed by the
Board (Denham/Shields) PASSED
Motion: was made to adjourn to the meeting
at 9:50 PM (Zahornasky/Shields) PASSED
Respectfully submitted, Trevor Hermance,
National Tour —continued from page 27
Martin Kriz made the journey from Virginia worth it as he took ASP in his
Subaru WRX Sti on a 122.988. Mazda led the way in the 12 driver STX
class, as Jeff “Go Gators” Anderson drove his RX-8 to a 128,784. Second
went to Eric Simmons from Macungie, PA. Jeff Hurst took a trophy for 3rd
spot on a 130.653, only 0.202 off from Eric. Honorable mention in STX
to Rob Lapierre for beating the car-owner he got a co-drove from (owners
name witheld for discretion. Oh why not - Charlie Thompson), Charles Kelly
from New Brunswick, and Joanna Ellis.
Two NER-ite drivers are Jim and Christine Murdocco from Green, RI.
Christine took the win in STSL, while spouse Jim fell caboose-side in STS.
Both are always with a smile, a helping hand, and have fun no matter were
they fi nish. For that, you earned your own paragraph.
Speaking of STS, localite Ben Wagstaff took that 5 driver, all-Miata class
with a 127.327. Bill Brundige was second. STC had Pennsylvanian
Adam Koback dispatch the 6 other drivers on a 130.269. In the stocker
categories, Sturbridge’s Grant Reeve pulled a last run win (only clean
one of Sunday) and unoffi cial Top Pax in SS with the Corvette Z06 on a
120.707. 6 other drivers fi elded SS, with Pat Salerno second, followed by
Sam Strano. SSL went to Stephanie Zadrozny on a 127,854 in the 4 driver
class, with senod place driver Shelly Monfort from Saratoga, CA suffering
a bout of cone-itis on Sunday.
C-Stock gets a group nod as all 3 drivers, winner Bud Collins, Chris
Carmenini and Keith Scala were clean all weekend and no DNF’s. On the
opposite side, SSM ordered on the cheap and racked-up 39 cone counts
for the weekend. Paul Klein was master-of-the-punt with 11 in SSM, while
sharing that “honour” was Dracut’s Anthony DeFiore over in EP.
9 drivers fought in B-Stock. Nick Barbato took the win in the Honda S2000
on a 124.019. Co-driver Justin Lau was second. A BS “Hello” to driver Ray
Bastille from Moncton, who should write a short story on his “week of h-edouble-tootpicks”
leading into very early Saturday morning he rolled into
the hotel in nearby Leominster. DS went to Todd Kean in the 8 driver fi eld.
Running the G-Fab Infi nity G35, Todd scored a 128.481. Of note in the
class, Ken Johnson’s Subaru would lift its tail along the cones so high, you’d
think there was a hinge in the middle of the chassis somewhere, but not
high enough to clear the 6 cones he tagged. Robert and Cheryl Woodsom
akso of DS, were running their fi rst Tour since back in the early 1890’s....or
was it 1990’s, when held at Bayside Expo in Boston. OK, OK, they’re not
that old!
E-Stock went to Eric Chiang, on a solid 125.858 over 7 other drivers.
G-Stock went to the State of Maryland and Andy Thomas, using a Toyota
Celica with a 135.180. Mike Wilson in a Honda Civic Si was second.
Hello to Moncton’s Ming-Duc “Need New Tires” Wong, another of our
Canadian friends who came down across the border to run the Tour.
Breakage was to play havoc several times, although not severe coursewise,
but as one mentioned, a “jet-dryer would have helped clear out the
line after the speedi-dri incident.” Bob Jordan offered a co-drive to a fellow
F-Modder James Fisher from Pennsylvania after “parts expiration” with the
Invader, and the STC Honda wheeled by Chris Haydu was caught doing
the “Don Kuehl axle dance” on Saturday just one section from the fi nish on
his second run. Being deft with tools, the Penn TeleData Internet Team had
the Honda back in shape for Sunday.
Former NER autocrosser Sandy Orenstein with “We Know Jack
Productions” in Cambridge was out shooting video clips on Saturday for an
autocross documentary project he is working on, and I must say, some of
NER Solo
Novice School
Ft Devens, June 3, 2012
By Eddie Savage
Ayer, MA – For a number of years the
NER Solo group has arranged a novice
school for those who want to spend a
day dedicated to learning some of the
fi ner arts and parts of Solo driving. The
entry list is often capped at 50 (this
year 54 drivers enrolled) allowing for
4 groups to be rotated through the 4
traditional mini-layouts of solo basics. These include the kidney
bean course with its decreasing and increasing radius turns, wide
as well as tight paced slaloms, offsets, and 180 turnarounds.
Attending the school will often get you several seconds quicker as
you start "putting it all together".
A big thanks to Nate Whipple who arranged the layouts, and
Jenna Corrales who helped put together a rewarding day.
Instructors included Jeff Anderson, Kathy Barnes, Nate, PZ, Dave
White, Stephanie, Brian, Cliff, Josh
Parker, Stacey, Ben, and at least
three times more of names that gave
their Sunday to the students.
Obviously we can't learn
everything in a day, nor can we
teach everything in a day. Solo
rewards quickness, split second
timing, smoothness, focus but also
experience. The skill develops over
time, time that we call "seat time".
But giving the rookie autocross
driver a few hours to repeat
each layout, with an instructor
at their side, builds confi dence,
understanding of basic car-control
concepts, and hopefully generates
the critical need of eye, hand, and foot control, along with
developing mental concentration on the course.
Hands follow the eyes. Look ahead. Meaningful things like that;
we all remember those fi rst few lessons, whenever and wherever
they where. My oft repeated mantra: We learn by doing.
The 2012 school had a cool and drizzle start between 9 and 10
a.m., enough to use a wiper pass or two, but the moisture never
long and hard for a
bit of colored ribbon.”
accumulated on the Devens tarmac to
really get the students adrenalin fl owing.
It warmed up quickly, and after the pizza
lunch break, blue skies and white clouds
awaited the afternoon mini-solo. A set of
instructor runs were offered to show the
students an idea of what they can do, if
they put their minds to it. A thank you to
the students that helped corner work for
the instructors, and hopefully Mike Steere didn't get his Scirocco too
adverse for you on some test runs.
The cars used today covered a wide scope: a Z06 Corvette, Honda
Civics, Miata's, stock WRX's to prepared cars like Street Mod
Camaro's, MINI's, a VW Jetta, a Lotus Elise and even a Fiat X 1/9.
Most anything can play, and a school often brings out a wide range
of driver preferences and color combinations.
For the afternoon 3-run student shoot out, Keith Jurgensen took his
DS Subaru WRX to
Top Raw and Top Pax,
running a last pass
raw 47.709/39.169.
Dave Estey ran
second in Pax on an
STS Miata powered
48.987/40.512. Third
went to Dan Philip in
the STF Honda Civic Si,
fourth to C-Stock's Andy
Checheta in the Nissan
370Z , and rounding
out fi fth was Robert
Pellerin in the DSP
Subaru Impreza RS. Pax
differentials going down
from there were very
close for the novices, some being off their nearest competitor by as
little as 0.004 to a few tenths on average. Excellent driving to you all.
So NER students, keep your mind clear, your eyes focused, your car
in tip-top shape, a roll of contrasting tape in the glovebox and come
on out to compete with us for the rest of the year, and next year too!
Keep that trophy in your sights, and soon it can be yours.
Be seeing you!
