After 58 years of marriage, Elroy—known as Burgie to many—and NitaBurgeson of Granite Falls have a sense of comfortable compatibility. Hearingthem reminisce about careers, raising their two children and spending timewith four grandchildren, you wouldn’t know how big of a role they played inhelping revive southwest Minnesota. The couple met at Mankato State University. After a few yearsof Elroy teaching in Butterfield, they moved into the GraniteFalls home they still own today. At the time, it was on the edgeof town, a setting Nita enjoyed since it reminded her of growingup on a farm. Now, it’s surrounded by more homes and sitsjust blocks from a place where Elroy spent much of his time. For many years, Elroy served as an administrator for theGranite Falls Area Vocational Technical Institute, which wasone of 33 like it in the state. He built its programs from theground up, and even in retirement, education remains hispassion.Early Boards of Directorsplayed instrumental rolesin setting the groundworkfor SWIF’s future success.Pictured (L to R) in 1989are Doug Bultman, KentGustafson, Don Stella,Gloria VandeBrake, ElroyBurgeson, Mary Page,Gerald Michaelson andRobert Carothers.Elroy recalls a phone call from then-President of SouthwestMinnesota State University Robert Carothers in the mid-1980s.The McKnight Foundation wanted to help rural Minnesota asit faced economic and social crisis. Together with Mark Loftus, also then with the University, they submitted the first proposalto McKnight to create the Southwest Minnesota Initiative Fund—later renamedSouthwest Initiative Foundation—to help struggling communities, nonprofits, businesses and families.Elroy and NitaBurgeson: HumbleService and SupportSince 1960, Elroy and Nita Burgeson have madeGranite Falls their home. But their leadership reachesfar beyond this community, especially through Elroy’scontributions as one of the Southwest InitiativeFoundation’s founders and their ongoing support ofsouthwest Minnesota.“What amazes me is we were a part of something that turned out to be so importantfor southwest Minnesota,” Elroy said, referencing that SWIF has distributed over$54 million through grants and loans, saved or created hundreds of jobs, andimproved the quality of life in the region. “From a humble beginning, it grew tosomething beyond our imagination. I often wonder what southwest Minnesotawould be like today without the existence of SWIF.”Besides serving on SWIF’s Board of Directors, Elroy chuckles as he recalls beingpresident of almost everything in town. He also served on the city council and asmayor. Nita made time while raising children to work in retail and real estate whilebeing active in the Jaycees, church and Cub Scouts.“We try to give back—not that we’re rich,” Elroy said. “I just don’t think that’s anexcuse not to give. I know it’s important. We should try to help if we can.”Elroy and Nita have been faithful donors to SWIF’s General Endowment, whichsupports work throughout the region. After the Granite Falls Area CommunityFoundation, one of SWIF’s 22 community foundation partners, formed in 2009,they supported their local endowment as well. Both seem to agree they’ve lived by a ‘get involved, give a little’ attitude. Communityaside, they fondly remember family trips to the Black Hills, Yellowstone NationalPark, visits to a brother in California and time spent fishing in the river, all of whichmake them seem so much like other southwest Minnesota families. While they remain humble—minus Nita claiming her husband can laugh harderthan anyone—we know this family’s generous leadership and contributions havemade a lasting impact.Southwest Initiative Foundation13

The Schwan FoodCompany: BeyondCorporate GivingThe Schwan Food Company is usually best known for its very first product—ice cream. In 1952, founder Marvin Schwan (pictured left) packed 14 gallons of hisfamily’s ice cream into a van and started visitingcustomers in rural southwest Minnesota. Bythe end of the day, it was all sold and the homedelivery business model that would grow hiscompany into a frozen-food industry leaderwas born.Just like their familiar yellowtrucks seen throughout southwestMinnesota, The Schwan FoodCompany’s many contributions toSouthwest Initiative Foundation(SWIF) are a vivid reminder ofthis business’s legacy of giving inthe region and beyond.Since then, home delivery, retail grocery and food service havetransformed this company from local to national, with morethan 16,000 employees. But corporate headquarters remain inMinnesota—Marshall and Bloomington—as does an enduringcommitment to this region. The company’s legacy of giving through SWIF began in 1990,when Marvin and The Schwan Food Company made a generousgift to honor his parents. The Paul and Alma Schwan Aging TrustEndowment Fund was created to help communities prepare forand respond to the opportunities and challenges of an aging ruralsociety. Other organizations and individuals have continued givingto the fund, creating a strong, permanent resource for southwestMinnesota. Some of the fund’s greatest impact was made by supporting SWIF’s Parish Nurse Program andtraining parish nurses who have served more than 100 southwest Minnesota communities since. Italso supported Senior College at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Let’s Go Fishingof Minnesota and more recently, SWIF’s Encore Entrepreneurship program and the Honor FlightSouthwest Minnesota organization. But Schwan’s relationship with SWIF goes far beyond the Paul and Alma Schwan Aging Trust Fund. The company has provided tremendous support to SWIF’s General Endowment, another permanentresource for southwest Minnesota. By providing the lead gift to SWIF’s Growing Home Circle createdin 2004 and annual membership to the campaign since—including a $25,000 gift during SWIF’s 25thanniversary year—The Schwan Food Company has helped SWIF meet match opportunities from TheMcKnight Foundation and leverage important dollars for the region.Additional gifts have supported SWIF’s Student Enrichment Fund, Technology and TelecommunicationsInitiative (TNT) and the Early Childhood Initiative. And, when local leaders partnered with SWIF to create the Marshall Community Foundation andBalaton Area Community Foundation, The Schwan Food Company matched gifts to each endowmentto support the communities where their employees reside. In addition, they provide marketing supportto the foundations and offer time off for employees to serve on their advisory boards.“It’s gone beyond just money,” said Theresa Zaske, Community Relations Specialist at The SchwanFood Company. As a resident of Balaton, she has both a company and community volunteer perspectiveof this unique corporate giving relationship.“Marvin Schwan started this really great thing but it’s continued long beyond his passing.” Theresa said. The impact of The Schwan Food Company’s leadership and commitment to giving will be felt for a verylong time as well.Southwest Initiative Foundation21

You likely already knew that. But did you know that SWIF created a program to keep wealth from this valuable farmlandlocal—and while doing so, make a difference throughout our entire region?Keep It Growing: Southwest Minnesota’s Farmland Retention Program SM allows donors togive their land as a charitable gift. Rather than selling it, SWIF maintains ownership of theproperty. There are many benefits to all involved with this giving option.Southwest Minnesota has seen tremendous change over the past 25 years. Through it all, collaboration has been the key to leveraging resources and supporting our people, organizations, businesses andcommunities.• Landowners receive a tax deduction for the charitable portion of the gift; bypass allcapital gains taxes; create stable revenue source for remainder of lifetime; and benefitfavorite charities.• Tenants continue renting the land and keep wealth generated by the land local.• County maintains tax base, as SWIF continues paying property taxes on the land.• Southwest Initiative Foundation retains ownership of the land and diversifies itsinvestment portfolio; earns revenue from the rent for the benefit of the southwestMinnesota region and its communities; and serves donors in a meaningful way, helpinglandowners create a legacy.SWIF is committed to capitalizing on new opportunities and meeting our region’s changing needs—and yoursupport allows us to do just that. Whether you’ve given to our SWIF General Endowment, a specific program,a local community foundation partner or one of many other important partners in our family of funds, you—ourdonors—make our work possible.Thank you!32Looking Forward, Giving BackTo learn more about this great giving option, contact usat 800-594-9480 or email donate@swifoundation.org.
