“Inside Washington” forum<br />

draws crowd<br />

Two <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> alumni with broad experience inside the Beltway<br />

v<strong>is</strong>ited the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> on March 14 to share their experiences.<br />

Chuck Fle<strong>is</strong>chmann and Jo-Marie St. Martin gave attendees a glimpse<br />

“Inside Washington.”<br />

Fle<strong>is</strong>chmann <strong>is</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the US House<br />

<strong>of</strong> Representatives and St. Martin <strong>is</strong> general<br />

counsel and director <strong>of</strong> leg<strong>is</strong>lative operations<br />

for the Speaker <strong>of</strong> the US House <strong>of</strong> Representatives,<br />

John Boehner.<br />

Fle<strong>is</strong>chmann, who received h<strong>is</strong> law degree in<br />

1986, <strong>is</strong> a Republican who represents the eleven<br />

counties that make up the Third D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong><br />

Tennessee. Before being elected to Congress,<br />

he ran a business in Chattanooga.<br />

In her role, St. Martin, who received her law<br />

degree in 1985, develops and implements leg<strong>is</strong>lative plans for the House <strong>of</strong> Representatives.<br />

She was selected as a John C. Stenn<strong>is</strong> Congressional Staff Fellow for the 110th Congress<br />

after being nominated by Speaker Boehner.<br />

In addition to d<strong>is</strong>cussing the specifics <strong>of</strong> her roles in Washington, St. Martin enc<strong>our</strong>aged<br />

law students to realize the value <strong>of</strong> their education, saying, “It’s a big world out there. Even if you never do one<br />

thing that <strong>is</strong> related to legal (<strong>is</strong>sues), you will use th<strong>is</strong> education for the rest <strong>of</strong> y<strong>our</strong> life.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Center for Advocacy and D<strong>is</strong>pute<br />

Resolution and the Tennessee J<strong>our</strong>nal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> and Policy<br />

recently hosted the 2012 Summers-Wyatt Symposium—<br />

“Cr<strong>is</strong>es, Coverage, and Communication: Advocacy in a 24/7<br />

News World.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> symposium featured lawyers, j<strong>our</strong>nal<strong>is</strong>ts, and communication<br />

experts who addressed the topic <strong>of</strong> legal advocacy<br />

as well as legal and j<strong>our</strong>nal<strong>is</strong>m ethics in the world <strong>of</strong> 24/7<br />

news coverage. Speakers with legal, media, and public relations<br />

backgrounds shared their personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional experiences related<br />

to media coverage <strong>of</strong> legal proceedings.<br />

Speakers included Pamela Mackey (pictured at left), who represented NBA player<br />

Kobe Bryant; Joseph Cheshire, who defended the Duke Lacrosse case; John<br />

Seigenthaler, who founded USA Today and the First Amendment Center; former<br />

CNN anchor and White House and Capitol Hill correspondent Joie Chen; President<br />

and CEO <strong>of</strong> the Freedom Forum James Duff; ABA Legal Affairs writer Mark<br />

Curriden; and Al Tompkins, senior faculty member at the Poynter Institute.<br />
