Blackshear Gala ra<strong>is</strong>es<br />

record amount for scholarship<br />

<strong>The</strong> twelfth annual Julian Blackshear Scholarship Gala took place on March<br />

31 with keynote speaker Judge Bernice Donald, United States C<strong>our</strong>t <strong>of</strong> Appeals<br />

for the Sixth Circuit.<br />

Judge Donald was formerly a judge for the US Bankruptcy C<strong>our</strong>t for the<br />

Western D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong> Tennessee. She was the first African American woman in<br />

the h<strong>is</strong>tory <strong>of</strong> the United States to serve as a bankruptcy judge.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> presented Carla Fox (LAW ’91) and Melvin Malone (LAW<br />

’89) with the R.B.J. Campbelle, Jr. Award in recognition <strong>of</strong> their extraordinary<br />

efforts to advance the causes <strong>of</strong> equality and justice. <strong>The</strong> award <strong>is</strong> named after<br />

the college’s first African American graduate. Julian Blackshear and h<strong>is</strong><br />

children, Jeffery and Lillian, were in attendance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> gala ra<strong>is</strong>ed more than $15,000 for the scholarship and had the largest<br />

attendance yet. Supporting sponsors<br />

<strong>The</strong> Julian Blackshear Scholarship enables<br />

the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> to recruit and retain many <strong>of</strong><br />

its best and brightest students. <strong>The</strong>se students<br />

come from diverse backgrounds and add their<br />

perspectives and experiences to the classroom as<br />

well as the law community. Twenty-nine percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fall 2011 entering class were students <strong>of</strong><br />

color. <strong>The</strong> Blackshear Scholarship plays an everincreasing<br />

role in expanding student diversity.<br />
