Cara Rains wins 2012 Advocacy Idol<br />

Twenty-f<strong>our</strong> first-year UT law students participated in the fifth annual Advocacy Idol Competition on March 27.<br />

With the help <strong>of</strong> their second- and third-year law student coaches, the Idol participants prepared a five-minute<br />

opening statement in the second-degree murder case <strong>of</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Rockytop v. Bobby “Rambo” Edwards.<br />

Panels <strong>of</strong> judges from various c<strong>our</strong>ts across Tennessee, as well as Michael Galligan, sponsor <strong>of</strong> the competition,<br />

selected the top six advocates: Willie Santana, Nathaniel Greene, Will Brewer, Sarah Watson, Hector Sanchez,<br />

and Cara Rains. <strong>The</strong> six final<strong>is</strong>ts were coached by Holly Lusk,<br />

Austin Purv<strong>is</strong>, Alexander Waters, Michael Tabler, Dani Bryson<br />

and Warren Korges, respectively.<br />

After a final round, the en banc panel <strong>of</strong> nine judges, the Honorable<br />

Norma Ogle presiding, named Rains the 2012 Advocacy<br />

Idol. Sanchez placed second, and Brewer and Watson tied for<br />

third place.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the advocates demonstrated skill in organization, delivery,<br />

and substantive technique in giving their opening<br />

statements—showing great prom<strong>is</strong>e as future advocates. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

first-year students, their coaches, and the student bailiffs are<br />

to be commended for an enjoyable and successful competition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial <strong>Law</strong><br />

and the Sports and Entertainment <strong>Law</strong> Society<br />

recently co-presented the conference,<br />

“Metamorphos<strong>is</strong>: How Technology <strong>is</strong> Reshaping<br />

Entertainment.”<br />

Presenters at the March 31 conference included<br />

numerous nationally recognized<br />

judges and lawyers in the field, including<br />

UT alumnus Joel Katz (pictured at right) and<br />

Ninth Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski, along with<br />

UT participants Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Glenn Reynolds<br />

and V<strong>is</strong>iting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jenny Sheridan. <strong>The</strong><br />

conference was organized and supported<br />

by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor George Kuney and Micki Fox.<br />
