A roadmap for HR strategyIn the past, HR was viewed primarily as an administrative function and its strategies were fairly simple.But now, perception has changed. Today, most companies recognize that people are vital to everyaspect of business performance and the HR function needs a sound strategy to provide services thatsignificantly enhance the value of this critical resource.Of course, developing a clear and robust HR strategy is just the beginning. In the end, achievingthe desired results of any strategy hinges on effective execution. Define valueThe first step toward an effectiveHR strategy is to define“value” and to understand howbusiness value is created. Thisrequires deep insights into theoverall business environment —including general market forcesand trends — as well as a clearunderstanding of the company’soverall business strategy. In fact,HR strategy is most effectivelydeveloped as an integral part ofbusiness strategy — taking intoaccount workforce trends andhow HR can help the companycreate value. If this is not doneat the outset, individual businessunits are likely to develop theirown HR strategies, leading toduplication of effort, potentialconfusion among managers andstaff, and higher HR costs.3
