ToolsOne of the <strong>RA</strong> tools which we use for engineering,design and construction is FMEA (failure modes andeffects analysis) according to DIN 25 448.The FMEA is used to illustrate and understand potentialfailures and their effects. It contains all components,the failure effects of which entail an inadmissiblesystem state. It is already created during the systemdesign phase before the tender is submitted.It contributes to ensuring and documenting that theplant to be built can fulfil the contractual demandsmade upon it. It is verified on completion of design andconstruction.Example: FMEA Catenary06
Another tool is the Ramses availability calculationprogram. It is a module of CALPOS ® , a software suitefor calculating electrical grids.Ramses assesses the effect of component failureson supply interruptions in the grid. Every possibleequipment failure is examined systematically by theprogram. All failures occurring during a preset periodare classified and the statistical frequency of theiroccurrence shall be evaluated.Each failure causing a supply interruption on the consumerside is being probabilisticly evaluated, i.e. theexpected frequency and duration of the interruption tothe supply are recorded for the load in question. Moreoverfrom that a variable for the probability of interruptionto the supply within the monitored time can beevaluated, producing a realistic overall impression of allsystem malfunctions with an impact on the load inquestion.Results of a <strong>RA</strong> Analysis07
