Water TechnologiesWallace & TiernanOSEC®-BOn site electrolyticchlorination systemThe Wallace & Tiernan electro-chlorinator OSEC®-Bwas developed for the generation of sodium hypochloritethrough the electrolysis of a brine solution.Production of sodium hypochlorite solution takesplace in once-through membraneless cells.GeneralElectrolysers built to the tubular cell process, whichare used as an alternative to chlorine gas systems, provide many safety features. Risks inherent in thetransport, handling and storage of chlorine gas orcommercial sodium hypochlorite solutions are eliminated.Local regulatory issues often limit the use ofchlorine gas for safety reasons.OSEC® systems produce directly on site sodium hypochloritefrom a saturated solution of common saltand electricity. Generation takes place on demandonly. The hypo produced in batch operation doesvirtually not degrade in strength even if it is storedover an extended period of time. The anodes used are made from titanium with a preciousmetal coating. This construction allows to granta five calendar years warranty after installation andcommissioning. The cathodes are made from a specialgrade Hastelloy C. Automatic control of the sup-ply voltage combined with a programmable periodiccleaning cycle of the monopolar electrodes by dilutehydrochloric acid ensure a virtually operator-free performance. The number of anodes in the electrolysercan be customised to produce the desired quantityof chlorine. This system flexibility provides a significantreduction in power requirements and plant cost.An intelligent PLC control system provides for thefully automatic operation of the unit including allcontrol, monitoring, alarm and interlock functions.Having set the flow rates for brine and dilution water, all that remains on site is to turn the start switch.Metering of the sodium hypochlorite solution is achievedby manually or automatically controlled dosingpumps.Benefits• Rugged compact construction• Customised design• Capacities up to 40 kg/h Cl 2• Virtually operator-free performance due toprogrammed electrode cleaning cycle• Long life anodes• PLC controlled system• Facility to meter solution to multiple pointsof application• Highly economical• Low energy consumption• Easy installation and start-up

Technical DataCapacity ranges of the electrolyser:570 / 1330 / 2660 g/h Cl 2(for systems up to 40 kg/h Cl 2 : consult)Power consumption:4 … 5 kWh per kg chlorineSalt consumption:approx. 3 kg salt per kg chlorineSodium hypochlorite strength:approx. 6 g/l equivalent chlorineDimensions (W x H x D) in mm:1500 x 1910 x 750Weight:max. 350 kgsPower supply:400 V, 50 Hz, 3/N/PEInstallation and maintenanceThe electrolyser system is shipped pre-assembled andpre-wired. On site just an electricity supply and operatingwater have to be connected and the sodiumhypochlorite metering system has to be installed. For these works, the correct installation and regularmaintenance, we recommend our specially trainedtechnicians.Wallace & Tiernan is certified to § 191 WHG (WaterHousehold Regulations).OperationSoftened water is mixed with common salt (tablets)in a dissolving tank to prepare a saturated brine solutionwhich is then fed by a metering pump intothe elctrolyser cell. The salt saturator is designed toallow refilling of salt without interrupting the generatingprocess. The dilution water is combined withthe saturated brine solution to form an approximately2% brine solution which enters the electrolyser. The DC current applied produces sodium hypochloriteand hydrogen. Heat transfer and the formationof gas result in a lifting effect that accelerates theseparation of the hydrogen from the electrolyte. The hydrogen together with the sodium hypochloritesolution is discharged into the hypo storagetank. An air blower is used to dilute the hydrogento well below its flammability limit and to force ventilateit to a safe outdoor discharge point. The sodium hypochlorite solution produced has astrength of 6 g/l equivalent chlorine. Level probesinstalled in the hypo solution storage tank start andstop the electrolyser.Applications• Disinfection of potable water• Disinfection of swimming pool water• Disinfection of process water in breweriesand the beverage industry• Disinfection of process water in canneriesand the food industry• Treatment of cooling water for the preventionof biological growth• Prevention of algae in irrigation systems• Disinfection of municipal waste water• Treatment of industrial waste water frommetal finishing plants, chemical industry, pulp and paper industrywww.wallace-tiernan.deWallace & Tiernan and OSEC are registered trademarks of Siemens, its subsidiariesor affiliates.Due to continual product development and improvement, certain specificationsmay change without prior announcement.SiemensWater TechnologiesWallace & Tiernan GmbHAuf der Weide 1089312 GünzburgGermanywtger.water@siemens.comWT.085.060.DE.PS.1106© Siemens Water Technologies 2006
