Italian immigrantPrimo Grilli planted his family’s first South Australian vineyard in 1973.Joe and Dina GrilliIn 1979 Primo Estate’s firstvintage was made by Primo’seldest son Joseph (Joe), a 20year old graduate of SouthAustralia’s Roseworthy College.From his very first vintageJoe Grilli sought to createrevolutionary wines.Joe and his wife Dina werepioneers, embracing newwinemaking technology in the1980s, experimenting withdouble pruning, cordon cuttingand botrytis. Trials with Amaroneand Ripasso techniques followedhelping to make Primo Estateone of the world’s truly uniquewinemaking operations.Joe and Dina return to Italyevery year to oversee thevintage of their Italian wineswhich appear under the Primo& Co label. The culmination ofJoe and Dina’s passion forexcellence is the JOSEPH range,launched with the first vintageof Moda Cabernet SauvignonMerlot in 1987. Our VineyardsPrimo Estate has three vineyards in carefully chosen SouthAustralian wine regions: McLaren Vale, Clarendon and Virginia.The original Primo Estate vineyard in Virginia dates from 1973and enjoys abundant sunshine and cooling sea breezes. OurMcLaren Vale and dry grown Clarendon vineyards were plantedin 2003 and 1998 respectively.We believe that owning the vineyards and managing themin sympathy with the environment is fundamental to growingthe absolute best fruit possible.
