Message from the President
The last few months have provided us with rich
opportunities to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment
and generosity of our patrons and partners.
On May 21, we welcomed more than 100
Members, Supporting Friends and Donors to an enlightening
preview of Venetian master Paolo
Veronese’s The Petrobelli Altarpiece.
A week later, on May 28, nearly 400 of the
Foundation’s patrons enjoyed a private concert by
the prestigious Accademia Barocca di Santa Cecilia
di Roma, thanks to the support of the Embassy of
Italy and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in
Canada. Afterwards, we joined more than 800
Members and visitors in the Great Hall for the opening
of the exhibition From Raphael to Carracci: The Art
of Papal Rome, presented by Sun Life Financial.
Among the masterpieces on view is Perino del
Vaga’s Saint Julian Hospitaller - an important painting
from Rome that could not have been part of the
exhibition without Alenia North America, which
generously supported its restoration.
On May 29, the Foundation proudly announced
a generous gift of $500,000 from Founding Partners
and Distinguished Patrons Donald and Beth Sobey
to The Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator’s
Research Endowment, a fund they created in 2002
with a gift of $1 million. Our feature article describes
what this important gift means to the National
Gallery and to Chief Curator David Franklin.
In June, we were pleased to acknowledge the
Embassy of the United States of America for their
support of the exhibition Thomas Nozkowski, a retrospective
of more than 50 of the award-winning New
York artist’s contemporary paintings.
Briefly turning to fall, I wish to recognize the continued
support of Pratt & Whitney Canada, presenting
sponsor of the exhibitions Gabor Szilasi: The
Eloquence of the Everyday and The Drawings and
Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibition.
Finally, it gives me great pleasure to recognize in
this issue all of our Supporting Friends who made a
donation in 2008.
I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks, on behalf
of everyone here at the Gallery, to all of our partners,
donors and members. Together, we have accomplished
so much more at the Gallery than we could
have done without your support. We look forward
to more exciting collaborations in the future.

Au cours des derniers mois, de nombreuses occasions
nous ont permis de reconnaître et de célébrer
l’engagement et la générosité de nos mécènes et partenaires.
Le 21 mai, nous avons eu le plaisir d’accueillir plus
de 100 Membres, Amis donateurs et Mécènes dans le
cadre d’une avant-première édifiante de l’œuvre du
maître vénitien Paolo Veronese, The Petrobelli Altarpiece.
Une semaine plus tard, le 28 mai, près de 400 donateurs
ont assisté à un concert privé donné par la prestigieuse
Accademia Barocca di Santa Cecilia di Roma,
grâce à l’appui généreux de l’Ambassade d’Italie et de
la Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada. Ils se
sont ensuite joints à plus de 800 membres et visiteurs,
dans le Grand Hall, pour participer à l’inauguration de
l’exposition De Raphaël à Carracci. L’art de la Rome pontificale,
présentée par la Financière Sun Life. Parmi les
œuvres exposées, notons Saint Julien l’Hospitalier, de
Perino del Vaga - une importante toile provenant de
Rome qui n’aurait pu faire partie de cette exposition
sans le soutien d’Alenia North America, qui a généreusement
commandité sa restauration.
Le 29 mai, c’est avec fierté que la Fondation a annoncé
un don généreux de 500 000 $ des Partenaires
Fondateurs et Mécènes distingués Donald et Beth
Sobey au Fonds de recherche Donald et Beth Sobey du
conservateur en chef, qu’ils ont créé en 2002 avec un don
d’un million de dollars. L’article de fond présenté dans
cette édition décrit ce que cet important don représente
pour le Musée et pour son conservateur en chef, David
Franklin.
En juin, nous avons reconnu avec plaisir l’appui apporté
par l’ambassade des États-Unis d’Amérique à
l’exposition rétrospective Thomas Nozkowski, qui rassemble
plus de 50 peintures de l’artiste américain.
Un coup d’œil vers l’automne m’amène à souligner
l’appui continu de Pratt & Whitney Canada, qui présentera,
à compter du mois d’octobre, les expositions
Gabor Szilasi. L’éloquence du quotidien et Les dessins et
peintures de Daphne Odjig.
Finalement, il me fait grand plaisir de reconnaître,
dans cette édition, tous nos Amis donateurs qui ont fait
un don en 2008.
Nos sincères remerciements à nos partenaires, donateurs
et membres. Ensemble, nous avons accompli
tant de choses qui se seraient avérées impossibles sans
votre appui. Nous espérons que cette fructueuse et précieuse
collaboration se poursuivra.

A Passion
for Art and
Knowledge
“The research conducted by the National Gallery makes
an enormous contribution to our knowledge about art…
Canadians from coast to coast reap the benefits, and
that’s tremendously important.”

Donald and Beth Sobey are passionate about art and advancing
knowledge of art in Canada in almost equal measure. The
Stellarton, N.S. collectors and philanthropists have been generous
patrons of the National Gallery of Canada Foundation for more
than 12 years and are counted among its Founding Partners and
Distinguished Patrons.
In 2002, the Sobeys donated $1 million to create The Donald
and Beth Sobey Chief Curator’s Research Endowment. In May 2009,
they donated an additional $500,000 to the Endowment, a gift
which brought the financial value of their overall support to the
Foundation to more than $2.2 million.
Their objective with these two gifts towards the Endowment
has been to give the National Gallery of Canada the opportunity
to conduct and publish research of national and international significance,
under the guidance of Chief Curator David Franklin.
“The research conducted by the National Gallery makes an
enormous contribution to our knowledge about art,” explains
Donald Sobey, the former chairman of the Gallery and a current
member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “It is consistently
of the highest calibre, thanks to the drive, intellect and dedication
of David Franklin and his team. Canadians from coast to coast
reap the benefits, and that’s tremendously important. It is a great
pleasure for Beth and me to support this fine work.”
Over the years, the Endowment has enabled the National
Gallery to publish Volumes IV and V of its scholarly publication,
The Review. More recently, the Endowment has financed curatorial
research residencies in Contemporary, European and
American, and Indigenous Art. The research thus carried out results
in important insights that broaden the context of the art on
view.
For example, Sobey Curatorial Resident Adam West’s research
into the Gallery’s European and American works created

between 1945 and 1985, several of which are notable and controversial,
provided the foundation for re-installing its postwar collection.
West’s original research shed new light on the collection.
His work assisted the curators in rethinking the way the gallery
space was organized, and in devising a plan to rotate and extend
the installations, to keep the galleries fresh.
The support the Endowment provides is priceless, says David
Franklin, because it allows the Gallery to conduct research that
would not otherwise be possible. “We can go back to the primary
sources and devote the time needed to unravel them. We can all
benefit from the creative exchange that occurs when more than
one person is investigating a particular subject,” Franklin explains.
“Our research drives the quality and originality of our programming
- which is one of the keys to our reputation. Beyond
that, though, intensive research is the only way to true originality
and to answering the important questions we face as curators and
art historians.”
This year’s Sobey Curatorial Research Resident, Candice
Hopkins, will conduct research towards a global Indigenous art
exhibition that will break new ground for the National Gallery.
Whether it’s an essay in The Review or research work for an exhibition
or the re-installation of a gallery, the Endowment’s results
are tangible, visible, and lasting, benefitting curators, scholars
and the public alike. Clearly, Donald and Beth Sobey’s generosity
is helping create a legacy of knowledge that continues to
enhance the National Gallery of Canada’s reputation for stellar
scholarship. We thank them for their enlightened support.

Une passion pour l’art et le savoir
Donald et Beth Sobey se passionnent pour l’art et presque autant
pour l’avancement des connaissances sur le sujet. Ces collectionneurs
et philanthropes de Stellarton, en Nouvelle-Écosse,
sont mécènes de la Fondation du Musée des beaux-arts du
Canada depuis plus de 12 ans et comptent parmi ses Partenaires
fondateurs et Mécènes distingués.
En 2002, le couple a fait don de 1 million de dollars pour créer
le Fonds de recherche Donald et Beth Sobey du conservateur en chef.
En mai 2009, ils ont fait un don supplémentaire de 500 000 $ à ce
fonds, portant ainsi la valeur financière totale de leur soutien à
la Fondation à plus de 2,2 millions de dollars.
Le but de ces deux dons est de permettre au
Musée de réaliser et de publier des recherches
d’intérêt national et international sous la direction
du conservateur en chef, David Franklin.
« Les recherches entreprises par le Musée des
beaux-arts du Canada contribuent grandement
à améliorer nos connaissances sur l’art » affirme
Donald Sobey, ancien président du Musée et
membre actuel du conseil d’administration de la
Fondation. « Elles sont de très haut calibre grâce
à la motivation, à l’intelligence et au dévouement
de David Franklin et de son équipe. Les
Canadiens à l’échelle du pays en tirent profit, ce
qui est très important. Beth et moi sommes heureux
de pouvoir appuyer cet excellent travail. »
Le Fonds de recherche Donald et Beth Sobey a permis au
Musée de publier les volumes IV et V de sa publication érudite
intitulée La Revue. Dernièrement, il a permis de financer des résidences
de recherche pour les départements d‘art contemporain,
d‘art européen et américain, et d’art indigène. Les résultats permettent
de mieux comprendre le contexte des œuvres exposées.
Par exemple, la recherche du résident Adam West a porté sur
les œuvres européennes et américaines du Musée créées entre
1945 et 1985, dont plusieurs sont remarquables et prêtent à la

controverse. Le Musée s’est inspiré des conclusions de cette
recherche pour réaménager sa collection d’après-guerre. Les travaux
de M. West ont jeté un jour nouveau sur cette collection et
aidé les conservateurs à repenser l’organisation des espaces des
galeries, ainsi qu‘à élaborer un plan de rotation et de prolongement
des installations en vue de maintenir l’intérêt pour ces
galeries.
Selon David Franklin, le Fonds de recherche Donald et Beth
Sobey est inestimable, car il permet au Musée de poursuivre des
recherches qui, autrement, n’auraient jamais vu le jour. « Nous
pouvons retourner aux sources primaires et
consacrer le temps nécessaire à leur élucidation.
Nous pouvons tous profiter d’un échange
créatif lorsque plus d’une personne enquête sur
un sujet particulier » explique M. Franklin.
« Nos recherches contribuent à la qualité et
à l’originalité de nos programmes - l’une des
bases sur lesquelles repose notre réputation.
Ultimement, les recherches intensives permettent
plus que toute autre activité d’atteindre
une originalité authentique et de répondre aux
grandes questions auxquelles sont confrontés
les conservateurs et les historiens de l’art. »
La résidente appuyée cette année par le
Fonds Sobey, Candice Hopkins, procèdera à
une recherche qui alimentera une exposition
sur l‘art indigène des plus novatrices pour le Musée.
Qu’il s’agisse d’un essai publié dans La Revue ou de recherches
entreprises en vue d’une exposition ou du réaménagement d’une
galerie, les résultats du Fonds de recherche sont concrets, visibles
et durables. Le grand public en bénéficie autant que les conservateurs
et les chercheurs. La générosité de Donald et Beth Sobey
contribue à la création d’un patrimoine intellectuel qui améliore
constamment la réputation du Musée en ce qui a trait à l’excellence
