In 1985 sheestablished the Helen HamlynFoundation to promote betterdesigned products and a betterenvironment for older people.Today the Foundation’s interestshave broadened to encompassinclusive design – practicalinitiatives aimed at improvingquality of life for people ofall ages and abilities incollaboration with industryand the voluntary sector.Helen Hamlyn is a championof those who can be excludedfrom the design process,especially older people. Thedesign research projects andprogrammes she has initiatedat the RCA are helping to shapethe thinking of a generationof young designers – and fostera growing sense of socialresponsibility.Snowdon AwardA special Award for DisabilityProjects by graduating studentswill be made by Lord Snowdon,Provost of the Royal Collegeof Art.Lord Snowdon is a long-timesupporter of the rights ofdisabled people and an activedesigner in the field of designfor disability. Previous winnersof the Snowdon Award forDisability Projects at the RCAhave included a hand-pedal trikeby Ben Wilson, adaptable cutleryby William Welch and landscapedtableware for stroke patients byLisa-Dionne Morris.
