challenge1This publication <strong>in</strong>troduces the58 shortlisted projects <strong>in</strong> the Designfor our Future Selves competition2002, organised by the <strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong>Research <strong>Centre</strong> at the <strong>Royal</strong> Collegeof Art.The competition aims to encouragegraduat<strong>in</strong>g RCA MA students toaddress social challenges and issues<strong>in</strong> their work - and <strong>in</strong>volve the enduser <strong>in</strong> the design process. It offers£5,000 <strong>in</strong> prize money and everyshortlisted entrant also receives aresearch bursary from the <strong>Centre</strong>.Students were given five briefs tochoose from this year. Two addressthe socially <strong>in</strong>visible groups of olderpeople and young disabled people;two <strong>in</strong>vestigate the challenges ofwork-life balance and urban mobility;and there is also a brand new sectionfor communication projects.The concepts and prototypesgenerated by the competition aimto propose improvements <strong>in</strong> thequality of life for everyone ata time of rapid social andtechnological change.


special awards2<strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong> AwardA special Award for creativity and<strong>in</strong>novation across all categorieswill be made by <strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong>,whose Foundation is the corefunder of the <strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong>Research <strong>Centre</strong>.<strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong> graduated as afashion designer from the <strong>Royal</strong>College of Art (RCA) <strong>in</strong> the mid-1950s and worked <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry ashead designer for Cresta Silksand Debenhams before devot<strong>in</strong>gherself to charitable works <strong>in</strong>Europe and India. In 1985 sheestablished the <strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong>Foundation to promote betterdesigned products and a betterenvironment for older people.Today the Foundation’s <strong>in</strong>terestshave broadened to encompass<strong>in</strong>clusive design – practical<strong>in</strong>itiatives aimed at improv<strong>in</strong>gquality of life for people ofall ages and abilities <strong>in</strong>collaboration with <strong>in</strong>dustryand the voluntary sector.<strong>Helen</strong> <strong>Hamlyn</strong> is a championof those who can be excludedfrom the design process,especially older people.
