shore leave on islands far from home, found seashell encrusted valentine<br />
boxes created by local artisans. <strong>The</strong>se became a treasured gift to a sweetheart<br />
or mother. Create your own valentine box from our cache <strong>of</strong> shells.<br />

SEINING THE LAGOON Ages 10-adult<br />
Explore the grasses and flats <strong>of</strong> the Intracoastal Waterway behind Gumbo<br />
Limbo. Hand-held dip nets and large seine nets allow us to catch and release<br />
a variety <strong>of</strong> fish, shrimp, crabs, and other marine life. An adult must<br />
sign-up and participate with children.<br />

WETLANDS & WILDLIFE Ages 7-adult<br />
Wakodahatchee is a man-made wetland which has become a favorite for<br />
birders and photographers. Bring your binoculars and join us for a ¾ mile<br />
guided boardwalk tour to learn more about Florida’s wetland ecosystems.<br />
Meet at the boardwalk’s entrance (call for directions). An adult must signup<br />
and participate with children.<br />

GENERAL INFORMATION<br />
<strong>The</strong> residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>Boca</strong> <strong>Raton</strong> are proud <strong>of</strong> the two miles <strong>of</strong> lifeguard protected<br />
beaches which are provided for their recreational use. <strong>The</strong>re are<br />
four guarded sections <strong>of</strong> beach: South Beach, South Beach Park, Red Reef<br />
Park and Spanish River Park.<br />

From 10am-4pm. Inquire at the Spanish River Gatehouse when you enter<br />
the Park. You must submit a valid driver’s license as a deposit for use <strong>of</strong><br />
the chair.<br />

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS<br />
Man-<strong>of</strong>-War<br />
What is it? Man-<strong>of</strong>-War are most prevalent during the months<br />
<strong>of</strong> November through April. When the Man-<strong>of</strong>-War present a<br />
hazard to the public, the blue pennant flag will be flying from the<br />
lifeguard towers. Man-<strong>of</strong>-War on the beach are also dangerous and<br />
capable <strong>of</strong> stinging; therefore, they should be avoided.<br />
Symptoms: Extreme pain from the Man-<strong>of</strong>-War sting usually lasts<br />
from 1-3 hours. Serious symptoms from a sting could be any combination<br />
<strong>of</strong> the following: tightness in the chest, respiratory difficulty,<br />
stomach cramps, vomiting, allergic reaction or severe pain.<br />
Those who suffer any <strong>of</strong> these symptoms should seek immediate<br />
medical attention.<br />
Treatment: Any Man-<strong>of</strong>-War sting should be treated by an ocean<br />
lifeguard, who will apply a solution to the affected area. It is very<br />
important that the victim use the callous portion <strong>of</strong> the fingertips<br />
to peel <strong>of</strong>f tentacles. Do not rub the affected area.<br />
