•Will My Insurance Cover The Costs?You may want to speak with your health careprovider and insurance company about the costsof any medications, radiation and/or surgery thatwould be necessary.What Will I Have To Do DuringThe <strong>St</strong>udy?If you have been diagnosedwith breast cancer,you may be able toparticipate in a new <strong>clinical</strong>study entitled:RTOG 1005: A Phase III Trial ofAccelerated Whole Breast Irradiationwith Hypofractionation plus ConcurrentBoost Versus <strong>St</strong>andard Whole BreastIrradiation plus Sequential Boost <strong>for</strong>Early-<strong>St</strong>age Breast CancerWhat Is A Clinical <strong>St</strong>udy?Clinical studies (or “<strong>trial</strong>s”) are a type ofresearch involving <strong>patient</strong> volunteers. They aredesigned to find better ways to treat disease.Who Can Participate In This <strong>St</strong>udy?This study is a <strong>clinical</strong> <strong>trial</strong> <strong>for</strong> some female<strong>patient</strong>s with early stage breast cancer who haveundergone a lumpectomy. You may be eligible toparticipate in <strong>this</strong> study if your doctor has recommendedthat you receive radiation therapy tothe breast.Why Is This <strong>St</strong>udy Being Done?This <strong>trial</strong> examines the effectiveness of a shortercourse of radiation therapy compared to standardradiation therapy. This is <strong>for</strong> <strong>patient</strong>s with earlystage breast cancer who have undergone alumpectomy.Who Is Conducting This <strong>St</strong>udy?This study is being conducted by the RadiationTherapy Oncology Group (RTOG), a researchgroup funded by the National Cancer Institute(NCI) and a research component of the AmericanCollege of Radiology (ACR).What Is Involved In This <strong>St</strong>udy?If you decide to participate in <strong>this</strong> study, you willread and sign a consent <strong>for</strong>m that explains thestudy in more detail. If you meet all of the studyrequirements, you will then be entered into thestudy.If you choose to participate in <strong>this</strong> study, you willhave tests pre<strong>for</strong>med. The tests and proceduresmay include, but are not limited to:• History and physical exam that includes abreast exam• Laboratory studies• Imaging• Surgery• Chemotherapy or Hormonal therapy may benecessary to treat your breast cancer if yourdoctor decides it is necessary.What Are The Benefits of BeingIn This <strong>St</strong>udy?The in<strong>for</strong>mation from <strong>this</strong> study will helpresearchers to learn more about the use of largerdaily doses of radiation therapy <strong>for</strong> fewer treatmentsessions in a shorter period of time as a treatment<strong>for</strong> cancer. The results from participating in <strong>this</strong> studycould improve your health and help future breastcancer <strong>patient</strong>s.Are There Possible Side Effects?You may experience side effects while in <strong>this</strong>study.
