Monday, 25 June, 2012Brazilian hospital gets its owndialysis machineBy Claudio Spiguel, AssistantGovernor for District 4560 andRotary Foundation committee chairfor the Rotary Club of Guaxupé,Minas Gerais, Brazil.I served as president of my club fortwo consecutive years in 2006-07and 2007-08, two very busy years. In those years, and the ones since,my club has undertaken a number ofimportant service projects, includingone to support a pilot bakery and anindustrial sewing training room at alocal school for underprivilegedchildren. But perhaps the most memorableproject so far has been one that wejust completed in May.As our club’s committee met todiscuss projects for the 2011-12Rotary year, we were approached bytwo longstanding members who hadboth recently lost loved ones, (onehad lost his wife and the other abrother).Their loved ones had both spentconsiderable time in the ICU at thelocal hospital in Guaxupé, wherethey had needed treatment for renalfailure.Since the hospital lacked its owndialysis machine, patients and alltheir monitors were painstakinglyloaded into an ambulance severaltimes a week for a 200-yard trip toanother building where they wereunloaded for the four-hourprocedure.The process was then reversed forthe return trip to the ICU.Local physicians confirmed thatrenal failure is a common problemfor patients in the ICU, and isactually on the increase due to agreater rate of obesity and diabetes. So we applied for a Matching Grantfrom The Rotary Foundation, andpartnered with the Rotary Club ofCentral Chester County (Lionville),Pennsylvania, USA, to purchase adialysis machine for the ICU.Together with a direct contributionfrom the Rotary Club of AnnArbor, Michigan, the total projectcost was US$25,300.On 21 May, we inaugurated the newdialysis machine in the presence ofa representative of our internationalpartner. The two Rotarians who initiated theidea followed the ceremonyattentively with pride, as tears felldown their cheeks. They knew, and we all knew, thatno ICU patient in the Guaxupéhospital will ever again have tosuffer what their loved ones had toendure to receive dialysis. The dialysis machine donated byRotarians in Guaxupé, in partnershipwith the Rotary clubs of Central ChesterCounty (Lionville), Pennsylvania, USA,and Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.Photos courtesy of Claudio SpiguelClaudio Spiguel (right) helps unveil asign noting Rotary’s contribution to anew dialysis machine for the ICU inGuaxupé.Rotary Club of KatanningClub SecretaryKeith OhlsenTel: (H) 08 9821 4141(M) 0427 817 008Club TreasurerMarlene ShackleyTel: (H) 08 9822 8040(M) 0428 683 601Spoke Editor/WebmasterArthur ToddTel: (H) 08 9821 2019(M) 0429 100 084Sergeants at ArmsDanny McGrathTel: (H) 08 9821 8697(M) 0427 876 117andClub OfficersMichael HobleyTel: (H) 08 9821 4333(M) 0428 214 794AttendancePeter MolinariTel: (H) 08 9821 1673(W) 08 9821 1933Immediate Past PresidentDanielle PerrieTel: (H) 08 9822 8030(M) 0428 231 506Program DirectorGreg RammTel: (H) 08 9821 1718(M) 0427 974 452Rotary Club of Katanning Page 3

Monday, 25 June, 2012The Nathan DrewMemorial TrustOur club has been a financial supporter ofthis important initiative over several yearsand, in turn, have helped save three livessince the inception of the Silent Sentries. The Nathan Drew Memorial Trust wasformed in September 2003 when 15 yearold Nathan Drew drowned whilst fishing atthe Salmon Holes in Albany. This incidentand many similar tragedies demonstratedthe need for improvements in coastalsafety. The aim of the Trust is to initiate andfoster the improvement of coastal safety, not just in the Great Southern Region butthroughout Australia. To date, the Trusthas achieved the following advancementsin coastal safety:∗ Instigated coastal safety surveys∗ Pushed for improved safety signage∗ Designed and implemented theinstallation of the Silent Sentry system∗ Provided buoyancy vests for hire fromDenmark to Bremer Bay∗ Initiated the development of a coastalsafety information systemThe Trust first developed the Silent Sentryin 2004.Two units were installed on therocks adjacent to popular fishing locationsat Salmon Holes in the TorndirrupNational Park near Albany, WesternAustralia. Four additional units wereinstalled in 2008 at Lowlands Beach east,Lowlands Beach west, Bum Rock and theDeeps in the Lowlands Reserve. Theseare all high risk sites where there havebeen lives lost and near misses occurregularly, including the loss of Nathan. In November 2009 the Trust launched thenew Silent Sentry System which has beenupgraded to include a GME MT400 406MHz Emergency Distress Beacon(EPIRB).The Silent Sentry consists of a canisterbolted onto the rocks with three 300mmdiameter ball floats inside. The floatshave surrounding rope netting and ahandle attached to hold onto. The floatsare accessed by pushing the retaininglever to one side. Once this lever ispushed to access the floats a uniquesignal is transmitted via Satellite to thePage 10Australian Maritime Safety Authority(AMSA) in Canberra. On receiving thesignal AMSA will contact the local police, the WA Water Police and the Trust. Thelocal Police will immediately initiate therescue operations. The estimated timetake from when the lever is moved towhen the local Police are informed shouldnot exceed five minutes. In June 2007 the Silent Sentry located atthe north end of Salmon Holes helpedsave the life of a 16 year old recreationalfisherman who slipped off rocks into theocean and was able to be rescued withthe use of the Silent Sentry floats. In March 2008 another recreational fishermanwas saved using the Silent Sentry atSalmon Holes and another recreationfisherman in March 2009. The Trust aimsto install a Silent Sentry in all known highrisk recreational rock fishing locations asfunds become available.► From Page 8Full recipient listThe full list of honours recipientsfollows.Wayne Martin ACWilliam Henry Mainwaring (Harry)Butler AODeborah Lehmann AOChristopher Steytler AOErnest Bridge AMGraham Edwards AMAlexander George AMNeville Green AMColleen Hayward AMBettine Heathcote AMThomas Rex (Rex) Henderson AMAudrey Jackson AMJennifer McComb AMTrevor Parry AMRussel Perry AMAnthony Pietropiccolo AMDavid Plowman AMJonathan Rampono AMWilliam Reed AMKimberley Wilkie AMRichard Woldendorp AMBrian Wright AMTerence (Terry) Barritt OAMNorman (Jock) Beattie OAMDonald Blair OAMFrances Carter OAMKay Cox OAMJenkin Davies OAMAnthony (Graham) Fisher OAMWalter Fry OAMMervyn Mancer OAMElsie McLeod OAMAnn Mitchell OAMDenyse Needham OAMHelen Shervington OAMMildred (Rusty) Walkley OAMJoe Zekulich OAMRotary Club of Katanning

Monday, 25 June, 2012What’s big, green, and saves lives? For the over one million people whoselives have been saved the answer is easy:it’s a ShelterBox. Founded in Cornwall inthe United Kingdom by Rotarian TomHenderson, this international disasterrelief charity delivers emergency shelterincluding a 10 person tent, blankets, cooking utensils, water storage andpurification and other essential life savingequipment all wrapped in a big green box.Since 1999, over 117,000 big green boxeshave been deployed across the world –from Fiji to Peru to Myanmar to theRepublic of the Congo and everywhere inbetween. ShelterBox is poised to sendimmediate relief from floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, conflicts, hurricanes, andtsunamis.Since 2004, Volunteer ShelterBoxResponse Teams have been the eyes andears of the organisation in disaster areas. These teams are well-trained, selfsufficient, resourceful under pressure andwilling to be deployed at a moment’snotice, and offer a unique perspective intothe lives of the people affected bycatastrophe.Recently, Rotary International andShelterBox signed a project partneragreement cementing the bond betweenthe two organisations.ShelterBox in PeruTuesday, May 08:A total of 409 ShelterBoxes have beendistributed in the regions of Lima andAbancay, the majority in the latter region, following continuous landslides. Over 400families now have a temporary home asthey rebuild their lives. All teams havereturned home and the deployment iscomplete.Tuesday, May 02:ShelterBox Response Teams (SRTs)have been able to distribute emergencyshelter to landslide survivors in hard toreach areas in Peru's Apurimac region, thanks to ShelterBox's collaboration withthe national Civil Defence Department.Ruth Mary Huertas Gutierrez is theCommunity Service Officer in Abancay; acity nestled deep in the southern AndesMountains; where she has also beenworking with SRTs to assist in thedistribution of ShelterBoxes.Ruth Mary's work involves visiting farflungvillages and settlements onlyaccessible by 4x4 vehicles. She knowseach of the villages intimately, and theyknow her, often greeting her with hugs. With her work, knowledge and relationshipswith these isolated communities, theResponse Teams have been able todeliver aid to them.'Ruth Mary picked up on our operationstructure and our methods very early on,'said SRT volunteer Graham Henderson(UK). 'She was able to bring us news offamilies and villages that we wouldn't haveheard of if it wasn't for her.''It's this kind of relationship that setsShelterBox apart,' says SRT volunteer YiShun Lai (US). 'Miguel, Ruth Mary, andPorfilio have become a critical part of ourgrassroots network, and we're deeplygrateful that ShelterBox's methods ofoperations allow us to seek out and findsuch important community members, whether they be official employees of thecommunity or not.'ShelterBox has distributed 408 Shelter-Boxes to Peruvian families made homelessby the recent landslides caused byongoing heavy rains.Wednesday, April 18:ShelterBox Response Teams (SRT) havebeen distributing ShelterBoxes todisplaced families in Claveles, a suburb ofLima, and in areas in the Apurimac regioncalled Pumarangio and Cachora. The heavy rains are making it challengingfor the teams to travel around as there areincreased risks of landslides. Despite this, the SRTs continue to assess need anddistribute emergency shelter, bringingshelter, warmth and comfort to affectedfamilies as well as a new sense ofcommunity.Monday, March 26:ShelterBoxes are being sent to Peru tobring shelter, warmth and dignity tofamilies who have been made homelessby recent mudslides.A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) hasfound a need for emergency shelter in themountainous areas of Cusco andApurimac in south eastern Peru. Much ofthe region has been evacuated but manypeople remain in the more isolated areas.SRT members John Cordell (US) andGary Boe (US) travelled to Abancay, a cityin Apurimac District, where a landslidehappened on 18 March.'We arrived in Abancay to find around 150families homeless after heavy rains onSunday caused the hillside to let go,which produced a mudslide that buriedtheir homes,' said Gary. 'Our priority is toget emergency shelter to them as soon aspossible.'The SRT is coordinating a response withthe national disaster management office, the National Institute of Civil Defence(INDECI), and other officials of theregional area while the ShelterBoxes arebeing transported there.Monday, March 19:Heavy rains and landslides have causedextensive damage in the mountainousregion of Cuzco in south-eastern Peru, home to the tourist destination of MachuPicchu.
