huskies sprint to topmen, women win indoortrack & field championshipsThe HBU men’s and women’s track and field teams crossedthe finish line with 14 gold medals to win the University’sfirst-ever Great West Conference team titles at the indoortrack and field championships held in Houston in February.The Huskies’ spree of individual event victories alsoresulted in a sweep of the tournament awards. HBU HeadCoach Theresa Fuqua was voted Coach of the Year for bothmen and women, and senior Morgan Pressley, who broke aschool record in the long jump, and junior Matt Perri, whohelped HBU win the distance medley relay for the first timein the five-year history of the meet, were selected asthe female and male outstanding performers. LakeshaCameron and Garrison Fick earned Newcomer of the Yearaccolades.A group of HBU student-athletes also got word in Februarythat their accomplishments in the classroom lifted themabove the competition. Coach Hall seeks 700th win as softballfirst to begin Southland Conference playCoach Mary-Ellen Hall ’88 has been callingthe shots for the last 21 of the HBUsoftball team’s 25 seasons.In that time, she has amassed a careerrecord 691 wins and earned several Coachof the Year honors while leading the teamto numerous post-season tournamentappearances, including nine straight RedRiver Athletic Conference titles and theteam’s highest national ranking of secondin 2005, when they had their best recordin school history with 51 wins. FollowingHBU’s return to Division I competitionin 2008, the softball team won the GreatWest Conference championship – andHall earned her most recent Coach of theYear award – in 2011.As softball becomes the first of HBU’sathletics teams to begin competing as amember of the Southland Conferencethis spring, Hall appears poised to markher 700th career victory during her 22ndseason as head coach.“We are very excited to be the first teamto compete for HBU in the SouthlandConference,” Hall said. “We have a verychallenging first part of our schedule –probably our toughest to date – but wefeel it is important to get us prepared forconference play.”The softball team and coaching staff –including Roger Willhite, who is in his18th season as Hall's assistant – are notthe only ones preparing to step up to anew level of competition. To enhance thefan experience, Husky Field, the softballteam’s home on the HBU campus, wasupgraded recently with stadium-styleseating in time for the start of the 2013season.HBU News | SPRING 2013 21
