A VERY PROSPEROUS <strong>2012</strong>!‘Contender’creating a versatile dredger out of aset to be further improved through the use ofLNG as bunker fuel, and for which a design isunder development at <strong>Conoship</strong> as part of anational R&D project.In this edition of our re-styled Newsletter,you will find many examples of ourrenewed commitment to creativity andinnovation, as we develop new ideas andpractical solutions to help customers tapnew opportunities in today’s challengingeconomic situation.A recent case in point is the conversionof a multipurpose cargo vessel (built byBarkmeijer in 1998) into a versatile, selfunloadingTrailing Suction Hopper Dredger(TSHD), to embark on a fresh and successfulcommercial career under new owner ABEKOMarine BV. The 4500m 3 TSHD ‘Shoalway’(delivered by Intervak in 2010) demonstrateda high level of efficiency during her first yearof service under the ownership of Boskalis,leading to a new series of near-repeatvessels for this owner. The design of thenew TSHD’s is slightly modified and furtheroptimised by <strong>Conoship</strong> in cooperation withD.W. den Herder Maritiem BV.Another illustration of this creative spiritis a project to raise an existing vessel’sdeadweight by increasing the maximumallowable draught through skilfulmodifications on the main deck.<strong>Conoship</strong>’s research and developmentendeavours are being brought to bear onthe final product, as they are introduced intonew designs of vessels and new solutionsfor owners. In this context, two remarkableprojects currently at the construction stagein <strong>Conoship</strong> member shipyards are thePilot Station Vessel (PSV) class in handby Barkmeijer Shipyards, and the shallowdraughtice breaking vessel at Royal NiesternSander.Global Seatrade, the subsidiary of theUrk-based Hartman Marine Group, hasrecently commissioned MV ‘Atlantic’, thefourth example of the fleet’s award-winning,exceptionally fast series of heavy-load/projectcargo vessels. Furthermore, constructionwork has been implemented on a newgeneration of project cargo carriers of aninnovative design, developed by <strong>Conoship</strong> inclose collaboration with Global Seatrade.‘Thinking towards new opportunities’To ensure future success, shipyards andshipowners must orientate to ‘Thinkingtowards new opportunities’. This vessel is the first of a series of 3700-tdw vessels forWijnne Barends.The outset of this design dates fromalmost three years ago, when WijnneBarends and <strong>Conoship</strong> Internationalstarted with the first development fora new successful generation of Sea-River vessels in a modified economicenvironment. The design is focused onhydrodynamic aspects combined withlimited installed propulsion power and aversatile hold. The generated conceptdesign turned out to be feasible andattractive and with this a basis for designwas created.Last year’s R&D projects at <strong>Conoship</strong>International focused on hydrodynamicaspects and optimization of hull forms.Based on extensive Computer FluidDynamic calculations (CFD), newknowledge was gained on innovativewave-reducing bow forms and onimproving propulsive efficiency byaft body design. Optimization ofcombinations of propeller-design andhigh efficiency nozzles, integratedin optimized aft ship forms, wereshowing promising results to reducefuel consumption without sacrificingdeadweight and speed.Elaboration of the Wijnne Barends designin the contract phase has been done incollaboration with Groot Ship Design forGroningen Shipyard, where <strong>Conoship</strong>International focused on the optimizationof speed–power and hull lines. Thesecombined achievements resulted inan innovative and high payload vesselwith a low fuel consumption. MV ‘LadyAnna’ will sail the coastal waters ofEurope, the Trollhättan Canal and therivers Rhine and Seine. Charterrates have been decreased significantly and the value of existing vessels isheavily under pressure. Moreover, stringent environmental rules and regulationsconfine the ‘playing field’ for transportation at sea.In general, today’s shipping marketbenefits from vessels with a low fuelconsumption and a high deadweight.For the long term, this means new andsophisticated development strategies fornew vessel designs. For the short term,improvement of existing vessels could bean opportunity, for example by increasingdeadweight. <strong>Conoship</strong> is involved in anumber of projects on lengthening ordeepening of existing vessels. In somecases deadweight can be increased byminor adjustments. Modification of highhatch-coamings, fitting an additionalstringer and a walkway alongside thetopside of the coaming, may lead to areduction in required freeboard. Thefeasibility of an increased draught andcorresponding deadweight increaseis amongst others depending on newfreeboard calculations, checking andre-submitting of all stability files at theincreased draught (intact and damage)and a check of constructional aspects byclass.We do not pretend that ‘draught increase’gives the solution for today’s criticalcircumstances, but it may alleviate thecurrent pressure by gaining maximumpossible deadweight. The deepeningof vessels is subject to several navalarchitectural aspects and must bechecked carefully. She is the thirdvessel in a series of four dry-cargo vessels built by Barkmeijer Shipyards.The design of the ship is the resultof joint efforts of the Danser family,Wagenborg Shipping, BarkmeijerShipyards and <strong>Conoship</strong> International.The vessel will primarily operate in theBaltic Region and the Great Lakes andis consequently designed for sailing inheavy ice conditions (Finnish-Swedish1A). She is also designed and equippedfor navigation on the Great Lakes andthe St. Lawrence Seaway.The hull form is characterized byslender lines at the waterline leveland a flaired bow section. Her predecessors out ofthis Hartman Trader 18 series are MV ’s ‘Deo Volente’, ‘Eendracht’ and ‘PacificDawn’ respectively. This prestigious design is the result of joint efforts ofHartman Marine and <strong>Conoship</strong> International and has been awarded with the“Schip van het jaar prijs” (Ship of the year award) in 2007.The sister vessels already havesound track records and the resultsprove that this versatile design withhigh autonomy and flexibility has ahigh earning capacity, even in today’smarkets. Amongst others, two maindesign characteristics contributed tothis unique position.The first is a slender hullform whichguarantees a high service speed of18 knots with a low fuel consumption.The other striking feature is her bigcargo load and discharge flexibility.Two heavy cargo cranes enable thevessel to handle cargo elements up to240 tons autonomously.For MV ’Atlantic’ the gained experiencewith the sister vessels resulted in afurther optimized design. Besidesextensive CFD-calculations, modeltests in ice were executed. The tests inice conditions were completed with anicebreaker close tow simulation.During operations in the frozen Balticarea in the winter of 2010/2011, thedesign proved her capabilities in iceconditions. This is the first ofa series of three Pilot StationVessels ordered by the Dutch PilotOrganization.This design is the result of closecooperation between the Dutch PilotOrganisation, Barkmeijer Shipyards and<strong>Conoship</strong> International, supported bysea keeping and propulsion specialists.The hullform is specifically designed tomeet the operational needs of the PilotOrganization and their operational criteriaon motional behavior in harsh weatherconditions. It is optimized in view of seakeeping capabilities. The new vessels willbe able to provide their services up to asignificant wave height of 3.50 m.This achievement illustrates <strong>Conoship</strong>’sand Barkemeijer’s strength in thedevelopment of specialized and complexships such as Hydrographic ResearchVessels, Emergency Response andRescue Vessels, Oil Spill responsevessels and Trailing Suction HopperDredgers.
