SHOWCASECommunity engagement plays an important role at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. In 2006, the universitywas one of the first 62 institutions in the country to earn the Carnegie Foundation’sclassification for Community Engagement. The university has been named to theCorporation for National and Community Service President’s Higher EducationCommunity Service Honor Roll in four of the last six years, including most recentlyin 2013. And this October, <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> will host the 14th Annual Conference of theEngagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC). The ESC is a non-profit educationalorganization of higher education member institutions, a mix of state-public and privateinstitutions that collaboratively work to build strong university-community partnerships.<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> is home to the Lubbock Lake Landmark, an internationally knownarcheological site; the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Museum, which is accredited by the AmericanAssociation of Museums; <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> Press; the Maedgen Theatre, home to<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Department of Theatre and Dance productions; and the MoodyPlanetarium.The university is located in Lubbock, <strong>Texas</strong> – a thriving city of nearly 250,000 peoplethat is the economic and medical center of a 26-county region. SHOWCASEKent HanceKent Hance became the third chancellor of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> System onDecember 1, 2006.As chancellor, Hance is the chief executive officer of all campuses and academicsites of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> Health Sciences Centerand Angelo State <strong>University</strong>. He is focusing his energies on continuing qualityenrollment growth, enhancing research in areas of excellence and accentuatingthe programs and opportunities that prepare students for professional andpersonal success. Foremost on the agenda is fundraising for scholarships,professorships and endowments as well as capital contributions. The chancelloralso works in Austin and Washington, D.C. to enhance funding for all institutions.Before becoming chancellor, Hance was a partner in Hance Scarborough, anAustin law firm. His firm’s primary focus was on state and federal administrativelaw, regulatory law and legislative law. In addition, he advised clients in oil, gasand other energy-related matters.Hance earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong><strong>University</strong> in 1965 and graduated from the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong> School of Law in1968. He returned to Lubbock to practice law and teach business law at <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Tech</strong>. In 1973, he was named an outstanding professor at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>.Hance began a career in politics in 1974 when he won a seat in the <strong>Texas</strong> StateSenate. While in the Senate, he was one of only four members who served jointlyon the chamber’s two most powerful committees: Finance and State Affairs. Fouryears later, he won election to the 19th Congressional District. In 1981, Hanceauthored and won passage of President Reagan’s tax bill. While a member ofCongress, Hance served on the Ways and Means Committee, the AgricultureCommittee and the Science and <strong>Tech</strong>nology Committee. After Congress, Hancewon election to the <strong>Texas</strong> Railroad Commission.Hance is a native of Dimmitt, <strong>Texas</strong>. He and his wife, Susie Hance, also anattorney, have five children and seven grandchildren.


SHOWCASEDuane NellisDuane Nellis was named as the 16th president of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> on March 22, 2013,and began his term June 15. Nellis comes to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> from the <strong>University</strong> of Idaho, wherehe began serving as president in July 2009. There, he was instrumental in producing recordstudent enrollments, gaining national recognition of the university research mission withdramatic funding increases, and extending university programs to benefit the people of thestate educationally and economically.As the chief executive officer of Idaho’s nationally recognized research and land-grantuniversity, he was responsible for nearly 14,000 employees and students as well as a budgetin excess of $453 million. That responsibility extended to 42 statewide extension offices andnearly 28 other research and educational facilities across the state including campus locationsin Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Idaho Falls. This includes general education as well as programsfunded separately from the <strong>University</strong> of Idaho to include the Agricultural Research andExtension Service, the Forest Utilization Research program, the Idaho Geological Survey, theWashington-Idaho Veterinary Program and the multi-state WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming,Alaska, Montana and Idaho) Medical Education program.Nellis is nationally recognized and active. He served as a commissioner for the NorthwestCommission of Colleges and Universities – one of the eight nationally recognized bodiesthat determine whether higher education institutions are accredited. While at Idaho, he wasappointed as a commissioner of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education thatcoordinates higher education efforts for 15 western states. Nellis has held other leadershippositions and continues to be active in other national and international bodies, including theAssociation of Public and Land-Grant Universities; the Association of American Geographers;the National Council for Geographic Education; and Gamma Theta Upsilon, the internationalgeographic honor society.He is recognized nationally and internationally for his research that utilizes satellite data andgeographic information systems to analyze various dimensions of the earth’s land surface. Hisresearch has led to more than 100 articles and reports in a wide range of professional journals,and 17 books and book chapters. He has given more than 100 professional presentations andhas been invited to speak at more than 60 universities and related settings internationally.He also has been recognized nationally and internationally for his research and teachingthrough numerous awards from organizations such as the Association of AmericanGeographers (AAG), AAG’s John Fraser Hart Award for Excellence in Research, the OutstandingContributions Award by the AAG’s Remote Sensing Specialty Group, the Young ResearchScholar Award by the Institute of British Geographers, and as a Distinguished Alumni FellowAward recipient from Oregon State <strong>University</strong>. Nellis is familiar with Big 12 conference peerinstitutions, as he previously served as provost and senior vice president at Kansas State<strong>University</strong>. He also served as dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia<strong>University</strong>, the institution’s largest academic college.Nellis is a native of the Northwest: he was born in Spokane, Wash. He met and married hiswife, Ruthie, while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in earth sciences/geography at MontanaState <strong>University</strong>. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in geography from OregonState <strong>University</strong>.


SHOWCASESpeakers In Order Of AppearanceBill DeanDr. Bill Dean has served as the Executive Vice President and CEO of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>Alumni Association as well as Associate Professor of Mass Communications at <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> since 1978. Dr. Dean, a life-long Red Raider, received his Bachelor’s,Master’s and Ed.D. all from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. Spending his career in education, Dr. Deanhas received numerous awards throughout the years including: Teacher InnovationAward – Mass Communications (4 times), Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa’s“Outstanding Faculty Member Award”, Legion of Honor Award by Phi Delta Theta -highest award given by the fraternity for leadership and distinguished public service,TTU’s President’s Teaching Award for Excellence, Mass Communications OutstandingAlumnus Award, Faculty Distinguished Leadership Award, Parents Association,Distinguished Faculty Award from National Society of Collegiate Scholars, ProfessingExcellence Award, The Success Center and the Dept. of Resident Life and Named BestTeacher at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> by students, 9 times in the last 11 years. In addition to beingan asset to the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> community, Dr. Dean has also been highly involved in theLubbock community serving on the boards of Lubbock Transit Advisory, YMCA andthe American Red Cross.David DeasonDavid is currently the Associate Director of Hospitality Services for Executive Cateringat <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>. David has over 30 years in the food service industry. Heworked for several different restaurant chains including Santa Fe/Tia’s Restaurants,Olive Garden Restaurants, and County Line BBQ Restaurants before coming to <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Tech</strong> in 2001 as Manager of Financial Operations. In 2002, David took over theCatering division at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>.His catering responsibilities include overseeing an operation that caters over 3000events a year. These events range from coffees for four up to seated dinners for1,400. In addition to the Catering division, <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> offers diningoptions through five mini markets, three retail outlets, two food courts, and threeboard operations. Along with in house branded concepts, <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> has threefrachised operatons that are licensed to the department.David has been involved with the National Association of College and <strong>University</strong>Food Service (NACUFS) since 2001. While having attended several institutes offeredby NACUFS, David has also participated in several national conferences. He also isactive in the <strong>Texas</strong> Restaurant Association having served on the Board of Directorsand on the Executive Committee.Kathy NordstromKathy Nordstrom is the Lead Academic Advisor for the College of Visual andPerforming Arts. She has been working for TTU for 26 years and advising for 23years. She has coordinated the two time winner of the President’s Excellence inAdvising Team Award having won in 2007 and 2012.


SHOWCASEScott RidleyDr. Scott Ridley is a pragmatic scholar/activist who balances intellectualism withgrass-roots action that adds measurable value to the P-20 educational community.Prior to his appointment at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> in 2011, he spent twenty yearsin Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State <strong>University</strong>. While at ASU, helaunched a network of school-university partnerships across the state of Arizonaand revolutionized the way teachers are prepared.He has published numerous articles and books and taught in the areas of learningand motivation theory, action research and assessment. He is the author andprincipal investigator of over 111 million dollars in grants.Nicky LadkinNicky Ladkin has over 25 years of professional museum experience and currentlyis the Assistant Director for Community Engagement at the Museum of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong><strong>University</strong>. She also is Vice Chair of Museum Science and advises and teachesMuseum Science and Heritage Management graduate students. Her special areasof interest are in the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, communityengagement, and engaged scholarship/experiential learning.Amanda BrownAmanda Brown is the Planetarium Intern at the Museum of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>and is completing her Master’s Degree in Museum Science. She is interestedin Museum Education and Programming and hopes to work in a children’smuseum. Amanda is originally from San Antonio, <strong>Texas</strong> and received her BA inAnthropology from Baylor <strong>University</strong> in 2009.Paul GoebelDr. Goebel, Associate Dean for <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Programs in the Rawls Collegeof Business, is a tenured Professor of Finance at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>. He hasrepresented <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> in numerous capacities, including serving as Faculty SenatePresident and being a member of the Graduate Faculty and Teaching Academy. Heholds an MBA and a PhD from the <strong>University</strong> of Georgia. Dr. Goebel has taught allareas of real estate since 1980, and has been involved in real estate development,valuation, brokerage and mortgage lending since 1982. Dr. Goebel has been theAdvisor of the Finance Association, and is currently the Co-Advisor of the RealEstate Organization. He has been a licensed <strong>Texas</strong> real estate broker since 1984.Dr. Goebel has written numerous articles that have appeared in such publicationsas Journal of Property Research, Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real EstateResearch and the Appraisal Journal. He is also the co-author of three books onmortgage finance. He is a former Chairman of the City of Lubbock Planning andDevelopment Commission, a former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Federal Credit Union, and currently serves on the Board of Directorsfor the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Federal Credit Union and is the Vice-Chairman of the Board ofTrustees for the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest <strong>Texas</strong>.


SHOWCASETedd MitchellDr. Tedd Mitchell is the eighth President of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> Health SciencesCenter, former President and Chief Executive Officer of the world-famous CooperClinic in Dallas, and a former captain in the U.S. Army Reserves (Medical Corps).He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with a subspecialtycertification in sports medicine. He holds fellowships in both the American College ofPhysicians and the American College of Sports Medicine. From 1998 to 2010, he wasa nationally recognized contributing health editor and columnist for USA Weekend.He is also the co-author of books Fit to Lead (2004 St. Martin’s Press) and MoveYourself (2008 Wiley Press).Raised in Longview, <strong>Texas</strong>, he is the son of a physician and married to one as well.Dr. Janet Tornelli-Mitchell and he met while in medical school and have beenworking together ever since. They have three children who, like their parents, makephysical activity a part of the daily routine. When not busy with work or homeresponsibilities, the Mitchells can generally be found at their ranch just outside ofDallas.Greg GelleneGregory Gellene is a Professor of Chemistry and since fall 2011, Director of the Pre-Professional Health Careers (PPHC) office. His research efforts are divided between afundamental science program and an educational program. The fundamental studiesfocus very unusual symmetry effects on chemical reaction rates, first discovered in hislaboratory, and their influence on the molecular evolution of the very early universe.The educational program addresses the development of assessable, sustainable, andtransferable strategies for increasing student success in chemistry courses generallyand Introductory General Chemistry in particular. Through novel 1-credit Bridgeand Support courses which are overlaid on the existing 3-credit lecture courses, thenumber of unsuccessful General Chemistry students has been decreased by 50% ormore without any intrusion into, or alteration of, the underlying lecture course.In the PPHC office he has introduced a mentoring program which pairs prehealthcareer students with health professional school students who are where theundergraduate is working to be, a series of health career application preparationworkshops, and a novel seminar course where students where instructors/practitioners from up to 14 different health careers give the students an intimate andpersonal look at the preparation, practice, and coordination of health care delivery.Gellene hold a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown <strong>University</strong> and master’s doctoratedegrees from Cornell <strong>University</strong>. He’s a member of Pi Beta Kappa and the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>Teaching Academy.


SHOWCASEStephen FritzStephen Fritz assumed the interim deanship of the Honors College in 2010. Mostrecently he was President of Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska.He is a member of the Registry for College and <strong>University</strong> Presidents, a nonprofitorganization which engages former university presidents interested in service ininterim leadership roles.Fritz earned his Doctoral degree in History from the <strong>University</strong> of Kentucky, aMaster’s in History from Southern Illinois <strong>University</strong> and a Bachelor’s degree inEnglish and History from Murray State <strong>University</strong>. He has also done post-doctoralstudy at The Queen’s College, Oxford <strong>University</strong>.Dr. Fritz has enjoyed a long career in senior administration including severalPresidencies. Among those served include Goddard College, New England College,Point Park <strong>University</strong>, North Carolina Wesleyan College and Midland LutheranCollege.He is a member of The Board of Advisors, Air <strong>University</strong>, and United States AirForce. His research interests focus on Diplomacy and The Life and Career of DavidLloyd George.Jeff WilliamsJeffrey Williams was appointed interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciencesin August 2012. He joined the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> faculty in 2006 and served as chair ofthe Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work from 2006 until hewas appointed Associate Dean of Finance in the College of Arts and Sciences inSeptember 2010.Williams’ research spans several areas of linguistics, including language contact,language documentation, language endangerment and revitalization, pidgin andcreole linguistics, and the history of English in the West Indies. He has morethan 50 publications, including two edited books and another two edited booksin press (Cambridge <strong>University</strong> Press). Since 2007 he has been working withComanche Nation College on a language revitalization project that was funded bythe Department of Health and Human Services. He also works with the Cheyenneand Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma on issues dealing with language documentationand revitalization. He has received funding from the Organization of AmericanStates, U.N.E.S.C.O, and other agencies to support his fieldwork in the West Indies,Papua New Guinea, Australia, and among American Indian tribes in New Mexicoand Oklahoma. Williams also worked with The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame andMuseum on an educational program introducing middle and high school studentsto the diversity of world musics and their influences on rock and roll.Williams earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in linguistics from The<strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong> at Austin. He also earned his bacheolor’s degree inanthropology from UT as well.


SHOWCASEJorge IberJorge Iber is the Associate Dean in charge of the Student Division and is a professorin the Department of History. His area of specialization is Mexican American History,but over the past decade or so, he has narrowed/refocused his research upon thehistory and significance of the participation of Latinos/as in US sport.Dr. Iber is the author/coauthor/editor of four books, and more than two dozenscholarly and encyclopedic articles. He has recently finished work on anotheranthology (tentatively entitled More than Just Peloteros) for <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>Press as well as a project on the experiences of Latino wrestlers for the NationalWrestling Hall of Fame (located at Oklahoma State <strong>University</strong>). Both of these workswill appear in early 2014. He is currently working on a manuscript on the life ofMexican American baseball great, Mike Torrez, of the New York Yankees (and otherteams). Dr. Iber is a 1997 graduate of the <strong>University</strong> of Utah.Jerry HudsonPrior to joining <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Dr. Hudson served as director of masscommunications at Lamar <strong>University</strong> (1975-78). At <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>, he served as directorof the School of Mass Communications, 1987-92 and 1998-2004; coordinator ofgraduate studies and director of the Institute of Communications Research (1993-97); founding dean of the College of Media & Communication. Dr. Hudson has servedas president of the <strong>Texas</strong> Association of Broadcast Educators and the SouthwestCouncil of Journalism and Mass Communications. The American Advertising Federation’s10th District honored Dr. Hudson in 1995 as the Outstanding Advertising Educator.The Lubbock Advertising Federation awarded him the Silver Medal Award in 2002.The <strong>Tech</strong> Alumni Associate awarded him its Distinguished Service Award in 2012.Marijane WernsmanMarijane R. Wernsman, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the College of Media& Communication, received her Ph.D. in English from the <strong>University</strong> of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1986 and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Americanliterature in the Department of English and undergraduate and honors courses inpublic relations in the College of Media & Communication for 37 years. Althoughshe began her career at TTU as a lecturer in English, she was Assistant Dean inthe Graduate School with duties in student services and thesis/dissertation reviewfrom 1982 to August, 1998. She edited over a dozen volumes of the Conferenceof Southern Graduate Schools Proceedings as the regional Publications Chair andserved for five years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of <strong>Texas</strong> GraduateSchools. Her literary research has focused on Henry James and related authors. Sheis a playwright and video scriptwriter, served as dramaturge for several TTU Theatreproductions, and served as managing director of the Windmill Playwrights Festival.She received an M.F.A. in theater management and playwriting from TTU in 2007;her one-act play, “Mrs. Rex,” was produced by the TTUT Raider Red One-Acts in1999.

Emily was born and raised in Amarillo, <strong>Texas</strong>.She earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> in 2010. Emilyworked for the American Cancer Society after graduation as a Community Manager forIncome Development before returning to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. Emily lives in Lubbock with heryellow lab, Raider.Cindy AkersCindy Akers is the associate dean for academic and student programs in the Collegeof Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. An award-winning teacher receivingoutstanding teaching awards from students, peers and within the profession, Akersjoined the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> faculty in 1997. She co-authored award-winning researchpapers and posters, and also serves as director of student services for the Collegeof Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Her teaching awards include theHemphill-Wells New Professor Excellence in Teaching Award, Presidents Excellencein Teaching Award, and a national Award of Excellence in Academic Programs. Herprofessional experience is focused in agricultural communications.Andrew VernooyAndrew Vernooy has served as the Dean of the College of Architecture at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>for eleven years. During this period he has established programs in El Paso andHouston dedicated to building pathways for undergraduate and graduate programs inArchitecture and Urban Design. During the past four years he has worked to establisha sophisticated Interdisciplinary Digital Design and Fabrication Lab and an innovativeHealthcare Facilities Design program. A member of the <strong>Texas</strong> Society of Architects,Dean Vernooy has over thirty years of professional practice winning over twenty designawards. During this time, he taught construction, design and theory at the <strong>University</strong>of <strong>Texas</strong> where he was Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. Dean Vernooy receivedhis Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton. He also holds Masters degreesin Architecture and in Engineering from the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong>, Austin. His postprofessionaldegree is in Urban Studies from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.Audra MorseAudra Morse is the associate dean for undergraduate studies for the WhitacreCollege of Engineering and a professor in the Department of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering. Her professional experience focuses on water and wastewater treatment,specifically water reclamation systems and the fate of personal products in treatmentsystems.Morse is the author and/or co-author of more than 30 published archival journalarticles and in the last 8 years has participated in research with other collaboratorstotaling over $10 million. She received the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Chancellor’s CouncilDistinguished Teaching Award and the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Shehas a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>.


SHOWCASELinda HooverLinda Crawford Hoover, Ph.D., was appointed dean of the College of Human Sciencesat <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> on January 1, 2003 and has been raising the bar of leadershiparound <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> and the nation ever since. Hoover started her professionalcareer as a registered dietitian in the health care community in Dallas, <strong>Texas</strong>. Witha teaching specialty to include food service management and hospitality researchmethods, she also served as a faculty member at <strong>Texas</strong> Woman’s <strong>University</strong> in Dentonand Houston and at <strong>Texas</strong> Christian <strong>University</strong> in Fort Worth. In 1990, Hoover joinedthe faculty of the Nutrition, Hospitality, and Retailing department in the Collegeof Human Sciences at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. She has also held various service positions suchas associate dean and interim dean. Since becoming dean in 2003, Hoover hassuccessfully led the College in acquiring funding for sponsored projects from federal,state and private resources. Hoover is a well-published author and highly sought-afterspeaker. Hoover received her bachelor’s degree with a major in Food and Nutritionand Home Economics Education from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> and she also completed a dieteticinternship at Vanderbilt <strong>University</strong> School of Medicine. Hoover received master’s andPh.D. degrees from <strong>Texas</strong> Woman’s <strong>University</strong>.Ryan GibbsRyan Gibbs, Ed.D. is <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>’s Assistant Vice Provost for <strong>Undergraduate</strong> Education.Dr. Gibbs is an alumnus of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> 3 times over (B.A. in PoliticalScience, 1998, Masters in Public Administration, 2000, Doctorate in Higher EducationAdministration, 2010). Ryan’s 13 plus years in higher education includes preparingat-risk pre-college students for the rigors of college, advising and mentoring firstgeneration to college students, teaching in the classroom, and leading a communitycollege to 4 straight student enrollment records.Ryan’s research interests include the mission of the American Community College andthe community college baccalaureate degree. Ryan has several professional honorsincluding Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and completing the Future LeadersInstitute (2008) for the American Association of Community Colleges.DaNay PhelpsDaNay Phelps is the Senior Administrator for the Office of Community College &Transfer Relations (CCTR). DaNay is a native West Texan from Lubbock and a <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> graduate. DaNay began her career at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> as an academicadvisor in 1990. She was promoted in 1991 to an advising, supervisory, and programdevelopment position with the <strong>Texas</strong> Academic Skills Program (TASP). In 1992the office of <strong>University</strong> Transition Advisement Center opened its doors and DaNayaccepted the position of academic advisor for this new office. She supervisedacademic advising for undecided, undeclared and prelaw students as well ascoordinating New Student Orientation for the College of Arts & Sciences.As the Senior Administrator for CCTR, she brings her focus on student successdirectly to bear on students attending other institutions of higher education who wishto join the Red Raider family. She is an advocate for transfer students on the TTUcampus and seeks ways to create, modify, and implement policies and proceduresthat will positively impact their success in earning a degree from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. DaNayfacilitates partnerships with other institutions of higher education and strives toestablish agreements making it easier for students to transfer to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> from otherinstitutions of higher education.


SHOWCASE<strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> ManagementDr. James BurkhalterDr. James P. Burkhalter, Senior Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management,<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>, began his career in higher education as a Hall Director atSouthern Methodist <strong>University</strong>, where he earned his B.B.A. in Accounting, andlater a M.Th. degree in Theology from Perkins School of Theology. Following thecompletion of his theology degree, he moved to the <strong>University</strong> of Georgia, where heserved as an Assistant Area Coordinator, Area Coordinator, and Assistant Directorof Housing. He also earned his Ed.D. in Higher Education from the <strong>University</strong> ofGeorgia. Dr. Burkhalter has served as a <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> administrator and adjunct facultymember since 1980.Dr. Burkhalter arrived at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> in July, 1980, in the capacity ofDirector of Housing and Dining Service and served in that position until 2000.At that time, he acted as Interim Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs andDean of Students until 2001, when he was appointed as Assistant Vice Presidentfor Student Affairs. He was then appointed as Associate Vice President for StudentAffairs effective in 2003. In July 2008, Dr. Burkhalter assumed his current positionas Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management. Dr. Burkhalter also servesas an adjunct graduate faculty member in the Higher Education program in theCollege of Education.Dr. Ethan Logan, Executive Director of <strong>Admissions</strong>With over 15 years of professional work in higher education, Ethan began hiswork in higher education administration working in a variety of different roles anddepartments in Student Affairs. In 2008, Ethan had the opportunity to transfer andwork in enrollment management. With a tremendous staff and sustained leadershipsupport, <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> has contributed to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>’ssuccessive increase in enrollment every year since 2008.Ethan has a great passion for the philosophy and science of enrollment managementand is privileged to be able to work in this field at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. Ethan is a <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Tech</strong> Alum, with three degrees from the institution. Ethan and his wife Micah areboth native Lubbock residents. They are both patrons of the arts and involved invarious aspects of this community. Their love of Lubbock and <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> providestremendous enthusiasm and energy for working to make this great institution better.


SHOWCASEJamie Hansard, Director of Recruitment and MarketingJamie Hansard is the director of recruitment and marketing for <strong>Undergraduate</strong><strong>Admissions</strong>. Her journey in higher education began 15 years ago as an admissionscounselor where she discovered her passion to help others achieve their educationalgoals. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Midwestern State<strong>University</strong> and is currently working on her Ph.D. at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Jamie’sefforts to serve her profession are exhibited through her service at the state andnational level. She currently serves as the Vice President for <strong>Admissions</strong> for the<strong>Texas</strong> Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers.Megan Myatt, Director of System Recruitment & RelationsMegan Myatt is responsible for prospective student recruitment for the Office ofthe Chancellor. She manages the Chancellor’s Top Scholar program, a strategicrecruitment initiative that actively recruits students who have been admitted tothe university with a score above 1500 on their SAT. She also works very closelywith the Chancellor to recruit many special populations of prospective students.Prior to joining the office, Megan was a recruiter for <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> at<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Megan is a graduate of <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> with a bachelor’s degreein public relations. She’s currently pursuing her master’s degree in interdisciplinarystudies. Her husband, Jake Myatt, is also a <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> graduate and a farmer inHockley County.Toni Riley, Associate Director of RecruitmentToni has been with <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> since 2006 when she began hercareer in higher education as an admissions counselor. She has worn many hats inthe office formerly serving as the West <strong>Texas</strong> manager and working with studentpopulations such as top scholar and out of state. Toni currently oversees themanagement of West <strong>Texas</strong> and transfer recruitment as well as the Visitors Center.Toni is our resident foodie and always has (and loves) the job of planning our foodadventures on the road during the travel season. She and her husband, Matt, areboth Red Raiders.Jason Hale, Assistant Director of <strong>Admissions</strong>Jason Hale has been with <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> since 2010 and has over nineyears of experience in admissions and recruitment. Jason oversees the managementof our regional recruitment offices and also serves as the Out of State recruitmentmanager. His passion is in helping others realize their potential whether that beprospective students or working with other staff members. “<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> is not only agreat place to work, but our outstanding academic programs along with the schoolspirit and traditions make <strong>Tech</strong> a great fit for any student.” He is already recruitingthe class of 2020 starting with his ten-year-old son, Ty.


SHOWCASEJulian Olivas, Austin ManagerJulian Olivas has worked in <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>since the spring of 2004. He has served in various roles including admissionscounselor, visitors center manager and is currently the manager of the AustinRegional Center. Julian attended<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Even thoughJulian resides in Austin you can find him on the <strong>Tech</strong> campus most weekends duringfootball season as he cheers on our Red Raiders.Allison Dragon, Houston ManagerAllison Dragon is the manager of the Houston Regional Center. She graduated from<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong> in 2004 with a degree in Restaurant, Hotel, and InstitutionalManagement and considers her college experience with <strong>Tech</strong> outstanding andunforgettable. Allison has an extensive background in admissions and recruitment,as well as outside sales, marketing, and career placement. Originally from Houstonand the proud parent of a 10 year old Red Raider, she can relate well with studentsand parents in the area. She has a strong passion for mentoring individuals in theireducational and career goals and feels she gets the best of both worlds here at <strong>Tech</strong>.Brandon Taylor, Visitor Center and West <strong>Texas</strong> ManagerBrandon Taylor has served as the Manager for West <strong>Texas</strong> Recruitment and theVisitors Center since August 2012. His primary focus is leading a team of admissioncounselors and overseeing the university’s campus visit experience. Taylor’s careerin the Office of <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> began as a student assistant duringthe spring of 2008. Since then, he has assisted in several areas of the departmentleading up to his current position. Taylor sees it as a great privilege to work for hisalma mater where he received a Bachelor of Science in 2010 and recently graduatedwith his Master’s in Education. Taylor is happily married to a fellow Red Raider, andis currently making a regular donation to <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>’s School of Law, where his wifehas recently completed her last year of law school.Jess Schwintz, Transfer ManagerJess has recently joined the admissions team after eight years of advising andrecruiting for College of Architecture at TTU. His experience working with withstudents in transition gives him a unique perspective on how to continue to improvethe overall transfer experience for future Red Raiders. A native of Austin, Jess andhis 10 year old daughter, Ainsley, love Lubbock and feel blessed to live among theamazing and special people of Lubbock and <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>.


SHOWCASEKim Cappillino, Assistant Director of MarketingKim joined the <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> team at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> in September of2012. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences andMaster’s in Sport Management both from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>. After spending 17 years inthe financial industry, Kim made the career change to higher education where shenow handles the marketing and logistics for recruiting future Red Raiders! Shehas also had the great opportunity to pursue her love of sports by working withRaidervision for <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> athletics doing numerous jobs for football as well asmen and women’s basketball for the past ten years.Gabriel Jimenez, Marketing SupervisorGabriel graduated from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing in2011 and has worked for the Office of <strong>Admissions</strong> in both San Antonio and inLubbock ever since. Prior to joining the marketing team, Gabriel was a recruiterfor <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> at the San Antonio Regional Center and was incharge of South <strong>Texas</strong> and the lower valley. Gabriel is from the Panhandle anda first –generation student, so he found it easy to relate to students and parentsabout choosing <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> <strong>University</strong>. While a student at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>, he worked asa graphic designer and marketing intern for <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> Athletics.Stephanie Park, Customer Relationship SupervisorStephanie graduated from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing in2010 and a Master’s degree in Business in 2011. While at <strong>Tech</strong>, she was a memberof the Pom Squad and later became the Graduate Assistant for the Spirit Program.Her career with <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong> began as an intern and graduateassistant in 2011. Upon graduating, Stephanie took the position as CustomerRelationship Manager for the Office of <strong>Undergraduate</strong> <strong>Admissions</strong>.
