Glove Material Performances 

NATURAL FIBRES 

Cotton 

Offers comfort and breathability for general applications. 

Resistant to abrasion and temperature up to 250°C. 

Excellent perspiration absorbency providing continuous 

wearer comfort 

Wool 

Natural fibre is soft and flexible with good thermal insulation 

and fire retardancy. 

Leather 

Two parts may be used for this comfortable and breathable 

material; the grain, the outer part of the leather and the 

split. The grain provides the glove with a good abrasion and 

tear resistance. Split leather gloves are used for heavy 

handling and offer a very good abrasion resistance. 

SYNTHETIC FIBRES 

Polyester 

Synthetic and durable fibre with low absorption of moisture, 

which resists shrinkage when washed. 

Polypropylene 

Synthetic material, flexible, comfortable and hydrophobic. 

Nylon 

A lightweight elastic polyamide, which is largely lint free, 

dries quickly and is resistant to abrasion and deformation. 

Para-Aramid 

Superior resistance to cut and abrasion, offering durability 

and performance that far exceeds that of leather. The fibre 

maintains high dexterity and offers excellent comfort. 

HPPE 

High Performance Polyethylene is supple, lightweight and 

durable. It withstands cuts just as well as Para-Aramid, but 

is harder wearing in relation to abrasion (ten times better 

than steel wire). It maintains its properties when subjected 

to bending, and can withstand chemicals, particularly 

solvents. 

Glove Coating Performances 

Polyurethane 

Elastomer is resistant to wear, abrasion, tearing, harsh oils 

and chemicals and does not harden in the cold or soften in 

the heat. It is microporous and provides the hand with 

ventilation. Being very elastic, it adapts to all of the hand’s 

measurements. 

Nitrile 

A non-slip synthetic polymer. It is supple and can 

withstand abrasion and puncturing. It repels oils, greases, 

hydrocarbons and is resistant to chemicals, particularly 

acids and non-ketonic solvents. 

Nitrile Foam 

This coating material brings additional 

flexibility and breathability to Nitrile. 

Excellent high grip properties. 

Latex 

Natural rubber that is supple, elastic, robust, 

highly resistant to mechanical impacts and 

hazards, is waterproof and is detergent-safe 

and alcohol-safe. 

PVC (Vinyl) 

Impermeable polymer. The higher quality 

PVC used in premium brands offers a very 

high level of chemical protection and 

excellent strength even at -20°C.

European Standards 

EN420 

All gloves must comply with EN420 General Requirements 

for Gloves. This standard includes tests for glove 

dimensions, dexterity (minimum 0, maximum 5) and 

allergens. For example, leather gloves are required to 

have a chromium VI content less than the limit of detection 

(max 10mg/kg). Gloves are required to be neutral with 

respect to skin contact. Instructions for use must be 

enclosed with every glove and must contain information 

about storage and transport, cleaning, handling and 

disposal. Electrical insulating and medical disposable 

gloves are exempt. 

Categories 

To assist in the selection of PPE, the Personal Protection 

Equipment Directive (89/686/EEC) is written such that 

safety equipment is categorised to enable safety 

personnel to select the appropriate PPE to match the 

hazards and risks identified.

Since 2004 the revised version of 

EN374 is valid. According to this 

version, chemical protective 

gloves are classified as simple or 

full chemical protective gloves. A 

full chemical glove must reach a permeation level of 

2 for at least 3 of the 12 test chemicals shown on the 

chart to the right.

Burning Behaviour - This indicates the period a 

material keeps on burning or glowing after the removal 

of the flame from the test specimen. The seams of 

the protective glove must not dissolve after a burning 

period of 15 seconds. 

Contact Heat - This measures the heat passing 

through to the inside of the glove, which cannot rise 

more than 10°C in 15 seconds. 

Convective Heat - This informs about the period a 

protective glove can delay the heat transmission of a 

flame. A performance level is only shown if Level 3 

or 4 for burning behaviour is achieved. 

Radiant Heat - This measures the time taken for the 

temperature inside the glove to rise 24°C when 

exposed to radiant heat density of 20kw/m2. 

A performance level is only shown if Level 3 or 4 

for burning behaviour is achieved. 

EN1149 Antistatic Properties. 

EN1149 is a garment norm and was not 

conceived especially for gloves. Therefore, 

before the antistatic gloves are used, the 

working conditions must be correctly 

described and be compared with the 

performance of antistatic protective gloves.

Resistance to Small Drops of 

Molten Metal - This indicates the 

number of splashes of liquid metal 

required to heat the inner side of the

of liquid metal required to breach a 

PVC foil (which simulates the human

EN61340 

Discharge capacity (electrostatic discharges). This 

standard confirms the basic requirements for materials 

which come in contact with or damage component 

parts that are sensitive to electrostatic discharges 

(ESD). These requirements include protective clothing 

along with protective gloves. 

EN10819 - Anti-Vibration gloves 

Hand and Arm Vibration Syndrome is caused by the 

emitted vibrations of hand held or hand operated 

machines or devices. The human body is more sensitive 

to frequencies between 2 and 200hz than to higher 

frequencies. 

EN60903 Insulating Protective Gloves 

To obtain compliance with EN60903, all gloves must be 

tested to the relevant voltage in the table below. The 

construction, thickness and test voltage combine to give 

the class compliance. To maintain class compliance, 

gloves must be inspected and/or re-tested every six 

months.

charge condenser cage over the worn glove of the 

earth tester from U = 1000V to U(t) = 100V in T< = 2 

seconds.
