Who are our students?• Students come to adult education to:• Improve their basic academic skills• Learn new skills• Earn their high school diploma• Earn their GED certificate• Learn the English language
High School Completion(Diploma Program)<strong>Adult</strong>s 18 years of age and older• Students who left school without earning their diplomafor a multitude of reasons• Classes are flexible to meet the needs of the studentand are offered in the morning, afternoon or evening• Students follow a set of credit requirements• Classes can be on the computer, or traditional classes• Students are eligible to attend the local technicalcenters for career training
Graduation
Recovery Credit• We provide classes for high schoolstudents to make up lost credit in theafternoon or evening• They are ½ credit classes on a tuitionbasis• Students can choose to take traditional orcomputer based classes
GED Preparation• Classes are offered in the morning and theevening to accommodate all schedules• Students are initially given the practice test toshow which areas they need to work on• The class is 8 weeks long• If the student is ready to take the test - they sign upfor the test• If the student is not ready to take the test - they stayin the class until they are ready
GED Testing• We are a State GED testing site• We offer testing 8 - 9 times a year• It is a 8 hour test, testing students in 5 areas:• Math• Reading• Social Studies• Science• Writing• A student must pass all 5 areas to earn theState certificate.
New GED Test• There will be a new GED test beginningJanuary, 2014.• The test will be taken on the computer• There will be 4 parts to the test: Math,Social Studies, Science, and Literacy• The test will be aligned to common corestandards. The test will be more rigorous• There will be 2 passing scores: basic andcollege ready
English as a Second Language(E.S.L.)• Students learn English, improve theirskills, and learn about American culture• Students have individual goals:• Improve English for their job• Improve English to better communicate intheir community• Improve English to continue in postsecondary education
<strong>Adult</strong> Basic <strong>Education</strong>(ABE)ABE <strong>Adult</strong>s are those who need to improvetheir basic academic skills to:• Continue post-secondary training• Increase basic skills for a job
Collaborations• We have various collaborations withmany agencies throughout OaklandCounty to provide the best training andservices
Oakland Literacy Council(OLC)Provides:• One on one tutoring• Improve basic reading skills• Teach English language skills for theforeign born• Training for volunteers to teach adultsand provides materials• 248.253.1617
Career Training• We work with CAR Training to providemedical and office skills programs foradults• The programs provide the trainingnecessary to get an entry level job in amedical office, hospital or front office
Region 12: OaklandCounty• Countywide collaboration• Partnerships between adult educationprograms, MI Works agencies, OCC,Baker College, United Way, AutomationAlley, Oakland <strong>Schools</strong>• Seamless transition from OLC/<strong>Adult</strong> Ed.to MI Works or post-secondary training,to ultimately a job and career
