MON-SAT JULY 26-3114SOUND INSTALLATIONSMIXTAPEKEVIN BREWAn installation-version of the RTÉ Radio 1 programme,Mixtape, interweaving radio archive material and ambientmusic. Produced by Kevin Brew, Mixtape follows in thetime-honoured tradition of those cds and cassettes exchangedbetween friends, using spoken word and field recordings asa key ingredient. This edition of Mixtape, called Talk to You,takes its direction from the words of the philosopher andhistorian, Theodore Zeldin.OBJETS SONORESGUILLAUME BEAURONGuillaume Beauron’s electroacoustic pieces andhorspiels are based on soundscapes, voices andsound objects (objets sonores).FIELDNOTESTESS LEAK‘Field Notes’ is an installation in disusedbuilding by Tess Leak of drawings inspired bythe environment around her. Using humblematerials such as found cardboard, recycledwallpaper, office index cards and a corner of aroom, she is inspired by Rauschenberg’s idea of“the generosity of finding surprises”.MON-SAT JULY 26-3115•Port Arthur is a short contemplative electroacousticpiece of an imaginary underwater/ underground world.• Héry is a musique concrete, an abstract sound drama, wherethe frontier between music and some form of narrativeis blurred. The listener makes his own sense of a possiblestoryline, being confronted with a natural decor of drones andsoundscapes.4 NORTH STREET, SKIBBEREEN | 10AM - 5PM• Tory island is a horspiel; a soundportrait of Tory Island based onvoices, natural sounds and music. Themicrophone conducts this radiophoniccreation and invites the listener to gothrough and around the island in anoniric journey. Award winner of the2003 SCAM ‘Brouillon d’un Réve’.Tess graduated from the B.A. in Visual Art onSherkin where her final show was installed inthe upstairs of an empty farmhouse on theisland. Whale watching, lighthousekeepingand the distance between two pieces of landall provided metaphors. This new work is aresponse to local floods, distant volcanoes andother smaller happenings.4 NORTH STREET, SKIBBEREEN | 10AM - 5PM

The show was created withthe help of the Arts Council. Branar is delighted to beworking with Bjarne Sandborg of Teatre Refleksionwho was artistic advisor on this project.Age 6-10THEATRETHESCIENCEOF FLANNO’BRIENTUESDAY JULY 2529In his writings, and particularly, in ‘The ThirdPoliceman’, Flann O’Brien took scientific principles, extrapolated them to fantastic proportions, and setthe outcomes in a bizarre context that is at once bothlogical and illogical. Written in 1940, but not publisheduntil after the author’s death in 1967, the story followsthe trail of a murderer on the run through an Irishcountryside that is not as we know it.In this setting, the narrator is continually challenged byscientific processes that we normally take for grantedsuch as the relationship between light and time, theConservation of Energy, and perhaps most famously, the Molecule Theory. His most infamous descriptionrelates to how molecular theory contributes to theproduction of a being that is part-Garda, part-bicycle(and vice-versa).In this exciting two-man show, where travel is anillusion and a pint of plain is your only man, the comicworld of Flann O’Brien is prised open by DCU ChemistryProfessor Dermot Diamond and actor Fergus Cronin.SKIBBEREEN TOWN HALL | 1PM/7PM | €5ABBEYSTREWRY HALL | 8PM | €10

THURSDAY JULY 2936TRADITIONALGAELIC CHOIRSAT ABBEYSTREWRY CHURCHCÓR THAOBH A’ LEITHIDCór Thaobh a’ Leithid is a traditional Gaelic choir from theDonegal Gaeltacht. Their approach to choral arrangement istruly unique in that they keep to the traditional Irish styleof singing without straying into the more familiar classicalstyle. Their singing is lush with flowing ornaments, free-stylephrasing and they illustrate a deep understanding of seannóssinging. Their harmonies are modal which give you atrue sense of what Gaelic music is about. They have a veryextensive repertoire from lonely immigration songs to jollydrinking songs to heartbreaking love songs.CÓR CÚIL AODHACór Cúil Aodha was founded by SeánÓ’Riada in the musical heartland of theWest Cork Gaeltacht of Baile Mhuirne in1964. This region, though historically richboth in instrumental and vocal music, grewin fame through its association with SeanO’Riada. Shortly after their formation Seánalso arranged them into a claisceadal orgroup-singing of traditional songs. The choirperforms consorts of this secular music as wellas their liturgical singing. Peadar O’Riada hasbeen director of the choir since his father’sdeath in 1971 and it is he who composesmuch of their music. Generations of CulAodha men have added their voices to thisrich and resonant choir and it has achievedcult status in traditional circles.ABBEYSTREWRY CHURCH| 8.00PM | €15Sponsored by
