S t. Mary’s Leadersserved between 1991-1995 as a faculty member and cross-country coach at St. Mary’s. While servingat St. Mary’s, Monsignor began a tradition that still exists today at our school. He is the founder of theSenior Lock-in. The lock-in was designed to keep our graduates safe by providing them a place to recreateand enjoy one another’s company in a variety of activities. The lock-in today is sponsored by the parentsof our graduating seniors.Over the years our community has experienced great joys and in some cases great sadness. Every timethat we have experienced a sadness or crisis we have been blessed by the pastoral support that Bishopelect Rice has given to us. All of us are thankful for all that he has done for our community, and we areextremely proud that a “St. NEWS“You Never Know Jesus is All You Need,Until He is All You Got.”By David HannibalRole models are people looked up upon with admiration for the way they live and what they have accomplished.People of society try and imitate their role models because they want their lives to be led in the same direction.Role models are most often well respected people who have achieved the goals they had set for themselves. Theycan be admired for their skills, moral lives, success or kindness they show others. Mr. Wayne DeVeydt, for many,is admired for all of these qualities. This is a man who was brought up in a humble home down the street fromSt. Mary’s High School and is now C.F.O. at one of the largest health carecompanies in the United States. He is living the American dream and it is alldue to the hard work he had put forth. On October 12, 2010, Mr. DeVeydt, a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, returned to St. Mary’s to be a keynote speaker at the Renaissance AwardsCeremony. He shared some of his stories growing up and how he becameinvolved in accounting. He talked of the failures of his life and how heresponded to them, which is what made him who he is today. A commonmessage that he repeated in his speech was “You never know Jesus is all youneed, until he is all you got.” Even after all of his success and power, he is stillhumble enough to thank and credit God for all of the blessings and talents hehas been given. It is inspiring to know that a man who came from such modestupbringings can achieve so much and still refer to God as the most importantbeing in his life.During his speech he preached of hard work, God and family. He was a man who was devoted to becomingsuccessful in the professional aspect of his life; consequently, that affected his family and his role as the head ofhis household. This realization then changed the priorities of his life. He now puts God and his family aboveeverything. This dedication to work, God and family is inspiring and is a model to live by for all St. Mary’sstudents and graduates. His speech and how he delivered it was so captivating, the students could not help but beinfluenced. He has a power in his words that forces people to listen. After the ceremony a group of St. Mary’s students were fortunate enough to talk to Mr. DeVeydt and ask him afew questions. His words were just as fascinating with a small group of students as it was in his speech in frontof hundreds of people. He credited much of his success to his Catholic education and God. Surprisingly, whenhe was a student he did not enjoy school. However, he believed the key to his success was that he just showedup every day and things eventually became better. As a student, he did not have an interest in accounting until ateacher at St. Mary’s, Mrs. Taylor, had to spark his interest for him. This shows us the smallest occurrence canmake a huge difference in our lives, and God is always speaking to us. She told him not to waste his gift and, thereafter, he pursued his career in accounting. In addition, he gave the students financial advice and professedthe importance of God. He spoke of the current economy and his disagreements with our current president,Barack Obama. He was extremely interesting and authoritative when he spoke.Mr. Wayne DeVeydt is the ideal model for a St. Mary’s student. He has persevered with an ethic of hard workand moral values throughout his life. He reads the Bible and speaks to God every day. His job, as time consumingand significant as it is, is still only second to his family and God. He is running one of the largest companies inthe country and is still humble enough to come back and talk to students at the high school he had once attended. He is a man of integrity and proves that if you show up and do your best, anything can be accomplished.Clarion Winter 2011 • 11

NEWSSt. Mary’s Raises Money for an El Salvador FamilyBy Sal EsparzaOn Wednesday, September 30th, the junior and senior classes at St. Mary’s attended a presentation about thecomplications and lifestyle issues happening in El Salvador. The presentation was given by Tim Morris, whois currently living in El Salvador interacting with the community in an attempt to make it abetter environment. Tim is an acquaintance of Scott Winklemann, a teacher at St. Mary’s. Heis working with the Marianist Lay Missioners to offer support for the women and children ofEl Salvador.Mr. Morris explained that El Salvador has a social standard that is affected by Machoism, which causes men to believe they are superior to all women and view them as property. Thiscauses society to be very tough for women and many are mistreated and abused while noconsequences are applicable for the men because it is not viewed as something wrong. Thanks to people likeTim Morris and the Marianist Lay Missioners, El Salvador is slowly and steadily becoming a better place. In response to this presentation, St. Mary’s raised 500 dollars to send to El Salvador. This amount of money isenough to take care of the needs of 1 family in the village for a whole month.Juniors Chris Akers and Sam Novy Volunteerat Angel Baked CookiesOn October 23rd, St. In November, Big Brothers and ournew Dragons collected shoes for the needy. It started as a trickle with just a few pairs of shoes but byThanksgiving break, the boys had collected a lobby full of shoes. The shoes will fit all types offeet including babies, athletes, future dragons, moms, dads and grandparents. The boys workedhard to win the coveted prize of a pizza party.Although there can be only one winner for pizza, the boys realize that givingback was the bigger prize. Through this experience they were taught that it is anhonor to serve others in need. Even though some of our Dragons’ families struggle, the boys donated freely and with open hearts. With his visit coming justa week after Pope Benedict XVI announced thatBishop Rice would be the next Auxiliary Bishop ofSt. Louis, ourentire communitywas overjoyedthat he was ableto keep a visitto our school onhis schedule andwelcomed BishopRice – alumnus, former teacherand championfor CatholicEducation – homewith open arms.As it is at allMarianist schools, the Feast of thePhoto by Jerry Naunheim Jr.ImmaculateConception was celebrated in a special way here atSt. Mary’s – and not just because Bishop Rice washere with us. The Immaculate Conception celebratesthe fact that Mary was born without original sin, leaving her completely pure and innocent – a womanperfectly created by God to carry His only Son intothe world. We celebrate that this woman, perfectlycreated, said “Yes” at the Annunciation and wemarvel at the joy with which she accepted theenormous mission God asked of her. But while Marysaid “yes” despite many unknowns about what itwould really mean to be the mother of God, it wasa considered “yes.” She didn’t rush into her answerimmediately. She had some questions for the angelfirst about how exactly it was that this was going tohappen to her. And then she gave her wholehearted, joyful “yes” that we all admire so much.In addition to celebrating Mass with our schoolcommunity on this special feast of Mary, BishopRice devoted his whole day to visiting with studentsat St. Mary’s and discussing the importance ofMary’s considered “yes” to the vocation God calledher to. He visited various classes throughout theday, shared lunch with a small group of juniorsand seniors and socialized after school with thejunior and senior LIFE and Kairos leaders. BishopRice spoke with students of all grades about whatit means to be a religious brother or priest and, beyond that, what vocational discernment is allabout. Bishop Rice encouraged the young men ofSt. Mary’s to stay engaged in their faith and to beopen to seeking God’s answers to life’s big questions. He challenged them to work for a culture of activefaithfulness for the student body at St. Mary’s and, through prayer and the support of their teachers andone another, to listen for God’s voice in their lives. On January 13th, I had the privilege of attendingBishop Rice’s Episcopal Ordination at the CathedralBasilica of St. Louis with Fr. Doyen, Jane Goff andsix St. Mary’s students. There was such a largecrowd we could not find seats and were unableto see much of the Ordination Mass. But beingpresent in the Basilica with so many other St. COVER STORYand active in deepening his faith and to listen forGod’s voice in his life. Bishop Rice, during his visiton December 8th, shared a lot of wisdom with ouryoung men about the process of discernment, butit’s not wisdom he gained just from serving as theArchdiocesan Director of Vocations in recent years,it is wisdom he has because he lives it daily.afternoon to come to the Cathedral in support ofthis man’s ordination to the role of “shepherd” wasa moving experience. Both Archbishop Carlson inhis homily and Bishop Rice in his address to thecongregation at the end of Mass spoke of the role ofa Bishop as a shepherd of the diocese’s Catholics –someone who strives to serve as a teacher and guidefor the people; someone who tries to communicatein a meaningful way the beauty and fullness oflife revealed in the teachings of the Church. BothBishops also spoke of their great desire to serve asa shepherd who would carry his sheep in their timeof need, as Jesus, the Good Shepherd, promised todo. Bishop Rice asked for the prayers of St. LouisCatholics that hemight learn thegrace and humilityto be that kind ofleader – a leaderwho could carry hisflock when needed. His address wastouching; whattruly caught myear was that in it Iheard a man whois striving, just ashard as the studentsat St. Mary’s family is proud of theaccomplishments of Bishop Rice and watched himtake his new position as Auxiliary Bishop of St.Louis with great joy. We will continue to pray forhim in his new role and strive, with Bishop Rice, our students and many others to build a culture ofactive faithfulness, in mission with Mary, where allDragons can listen for God’s voice in their lives.Clarion Winter 2011 • 19

In preparation for this day, the students learned the four forces of flight and the BernoulliPrinciple in their conceptual physics class with Mr. John Lawler. In their Algebra I class with Ms. Jean Kilper, they learned how to compute aspect ratios and glide slope ratios and to use EXCEL for charting and graphingdata. On November 2, 2010, the students worked in teams, to make a shoebox glider that would go the longestdistance and not fall apart. Each team of students had a drawing for their proposed glider and brought in theirconstruction materials. Within two hours they made their planes, tested how well they flew and went back to thedrawing board to make changes and fly them again. The final competition began, with each team getting 3 trialflights. The longest flight of the competition was 26 feet, and the glider was designed by Nick Zottarelle, LukeHamilton, Isreal Campos and Patrick Coghill. The team of Kevin Le, Rufus Crawford, Lorenzo Garcia, AlecShicker and Alex Hines had the best overall average of all three flights with an average distance of 24 feet. They participated in Ropes andRituals, a program that has team building activities,Marianist activities and includes the rich history ofour school. Mary’s High School Wins –The Shoes Stay HomeSt. Mary’s High School plays Bishop DuBourg annually in varsity football in the battle for the shoes. This year’sgame took place on September 24 th . This rivalry is one of the most famous and long lasting in the St. Louis area. The Shoes Game dates back nearly 60 years and although the game may be famous, most people don’t know howthe tradition was started. In the early 1950’s, and well before even then, the city of St. Louis had neighborhoodsthat were greatly influenced by their ethnic background because ofthe many emigrants that settled there. South St. Louis had Dogtownwhere many of the Irish settled, the Hill is where the Italians settled andDutchtown, home to many of the students of St. Mary’s and DuBourg,is where the Germans settled. The area was so influenced by Germansthat one of the local Catholic schools St. Boniface taught English as thesecond language. So how did this town full of German emigrants becomemistakenly known as Dutchtown? The German word for its peopleis Deutsch, and after the word was Americanized the town becameDutchtown. In the early 50’s Fr. Reiley, who was the Athletic Director of DuBourgHigh School, traveled to Europe and visited the Netherlands. He broughtback with him a pair of wooden Dutch shoes. One was painted greenfor St. Mary’s and the other was painted red for DuBourg. Every yearthe winning team keeps both shoes for the year. For 13 years St. Mary’sHigh School has won, and the shoes have been on display in theirentrance to the gymnasium. This year was no exception, making it 14 years straight and it was St.Mary’s football from the first whistle. After junior Alan Lee’s 33 yardrun on the first play of the game, the Dragons dominated both sides ofthe ball. The 20-0 halftime score was stifled only by the self-imposedpenalties which led to two touchdowns being called back. Five othertouchdowns were scored by sophomore Kevin Hennessy, junior Alan Leeand seniors Nick Sahuri and Will Ruzicka, who passed for one and ran for another two.On the other side of the ball, the Dragons shut down the potent Cavalier ground game with aggressive play fromboth the defensive linemen and linebackers. The DuBourg air attack was stifled as well. With two sacks, twointerceptions and less than 100 yards, it was a dominant defensive performance. Coach Parent would like tothank the enormous crowd who provided support and excitement that Friday night. In addition, we are all proudthat Will Ruzicka was named the Journal Player of the Week. Please join us next year when the Shoe Game willbe played at St. Mary’s.Clarion Winter 2011 • 25

The Oral Auction raised over $38,350, the Silent Auctionraised $9,000 and the Overhead Auction brought in over $10,500.Of special note this year was the Fund-A-Need portion of the night. Every dollar pledged during the Fund-A-Need will godirectly toward a St. Mary’s student’s education. Fr. Mitch introducedthis segment and brought the student volunteers to the front of theroom as examples of the young, Marianist men this institution strivesto develop. As in years past, the generosity was catching and almostepidemic as guest after guest raised their bid cards to donate. It wasreally a spiritual experience. The pilot year of the Fund-A-Need, theprevious record holding 2008 Auction, raised $43,500 for technologyimprovements around the school. Mary’s Alumni Association Board had a vision to increase the alumni membership to500. At this time, the membership number was hovering around 350 members. This has been the number ofmembers we have seen for the past 10 years. At the first meeting of the year, it was a goal of the Association’sBoard to see if this membership number could rise to 500 or more in the next two years. With over 8,000 livingdragon alums, 500 members is a realistic goal. As of January 1, 2011 we are very proud to say the membershipis around 460 members. We are just 40 shy of our goal! If you are reading this article and are not a member ofthe Alumni Association, we hope that you will find it in the spirit of St. Mary’s High School to join and helpus reach our goal of 500 members. $25 a year is all that it will cost you. The price of a pizza gets you a yearlymembership. Since the Alumni Association’s inception, well over $300,000 has been given back to St. Mary’sHigh School in the form of scholarships, technology, sports and maintenance equipment, infrastructure, etc. Sothe $25 annual fee goes a long way!
