Libya is the fourthlargest country in Africa, covering an areaof almost 1.8 million square kilometres(700,000 sq mi), 90% of which is desert.Boasting a stretch of almost 2,000km oflargely unspoilt coastline and a temperateMediterranean climate, the country isa haven that must be protected andenjoyed.Libya has been inhabited since the8th millennium BC, when its coastalplain was home to a Neolithic people. It has since been a melting pot, withthe Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks,Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans rulingall or part of the area. The country ishome to some of the most important andbest-preserved prehistoric, Greek, Roman,Judaic and Islamic antiquities in the world, with archaeological sites at Cyrene, LeptisMagna, Sabratha and Ghadames. Thethree historical regions of the countryare Tripolitania, the Fezzan and Cyrenaica;the modern capital, Tripoli, is home to1.7 million of Libya’s 5.7 million people.TarifaMicro-ClimateThe micro-climate of The Green Mountainis generated by the northern windsmoving across the Mediterranean Seaand picking up humidity. Once this humidair passes over The Green Mountain,it is forced upwards by the sudden risein topography. As it rises and continuesto cool, the air releases its warmer, heavier water molecules, falling asrain and ground level condensationover the mountains.Once the air passes over themountains, it has lost all its humidityand is very dry, continuing southwardinto the Saharan desert. This processwas once highly visible when the regionwould frequently receive more thandouble the rainfall of the area south ofthe mountains. However, due to extremeclimate changes in the past 15 years, the600mm annual rainfall has now droppedto as low as 250mm per year.CassisNiceSt. TropezCannesMentonMonaco1.
