Site planThe Marina1 2 34The Marina is located on theMediterranean coast, 5 km east ofthe medina at Tripoli. Designed tocreate a lively, mixed use quarter on theMediterranean coast that bridges theAl Fat’h Highway, the scheme will extendTripoli to the coast, as it was historically.Informed by the tight urban grain of thecity, the design builds on the lessons ofother successful seafront cities on theMediterranean coast, such as Nice andCannes. The ambiance and style of theold Tripoli waterfront will be reinterpretedin a modern architectural language. The active fishing harbour willbe retained and set next to a moremodern, vibrant marina. Shops, cafésand restaurants will line a new seafrontpromenade, culminating in a landmarkbuilding at the centre of the two sites. The new accommodation will be arrangedin traditional city blocks set aroundinternal courtyards that echo the traditionsof the vernacular architecture. The divisionbetween the private internal spaces andthe semi-private gardens will be softenedby the addition of balconies and verandasthat overlook the internal courtyards. The development will also includea luxury hotel, comfortable servicedapartments, and high quality retailspace, cafés and restaurants.© Foster + Partners Image 3 © Gvictoria/Dreamstime; image 6 is based on Dennis Gilbert/VIEW photograph6 785 954 55
