Students use the sites to communicate with friends, findnew bands, and share pictures and journal entries that documenttheir social lives and private thoughts. What started off as a placein cyberspace that was known only by teens and young adults, however, has become so widely used that college and job recruitersare taking note.Social networking websites including MySpace, Friendster, andLiveJournal collectively have millions of users. Even college-centricsites like Facebook are accessed by the masses. For example, if youare a member of the DePaul network on Facebook, every student, alumnus, and employee of DePaul has access to your profile – that isthousands of people! Despite these user statistics, many studentsassume that their online activities are only viewed by friends orfellow students. They’re wrong.NBC5.com reports that 26 percent of recruiters in one surveyadmitted to eliminating candidates because of informationfound online. This revelation has some students changing theirprofiles. “I would not want an employer to see my profile due to[inappropriate] pictures and comments posted when partying. I willchange it when I start applying [for employment],” said one DePaulFinance undergraduate who declined to be named.“Should prospective employers be reading your personal information?”asks Alison Doyle, job searching expert on About.com. “Maybe not, but, if you put it on the internet and it’s readily accessible, they canand they might,” she notes.Learn more about On-Line Networking on page 2Relocating as aSuccessful JobSearch StrategyBy Ed Childs, Assistant Director/Advisor, Career CenterThe current job market nationwide isthe best it’s been in five years. Still, thereare certain industries in Chicago that canbe challenging to break into. Given therecent growth of students majoring inCommunication Arts, Digital Designand Multimedia, more graduatesinterested in creative industries arerelocating as a way to land a desirableposition. Research indicates thatrelocating, coupled with a well plannedstrategy and significant networking, canprovide graduates increased jobopportunities, quicker career advancementand challenging learning experiences.Learn about Relocating on page 2Avoid NegativeNetworking!Tips for building an effectiveprofessional networkBy Kelly Kardaras, Peer Career AdvisorNetworking can be a key element insecuring your dream career. However, thisstrategy is counterproductive for negativenetworkers – those whose overbearingtactics make others want to steer clearinstead of building a relationship.Learn more about Networking on page 3Career Connectionscareercenter.depaul.edu

On-Line Social Networking Sites continued from page 1service overviewSHARPEN CAREERKNOWLEDGE & SKILLSWorkshop SeriesImprove your career readiness throughmore than twenty different workshops.Career AdvisingWalk in and see a Peer CareerAdvisor or make an appointment tosee a Career Advisor who specializesin your major. One way to avoid exposing inappropriate informationto potential employers is to make your accountprivate, so that only those people you know or grantaccess to can view your information. Each website hasprivacy settings available that can help you protectyour personal information. Alternatively, you cansimply be careful about what you post online. “I postcomments and pictures knowing that they are therefor the public to view. With that in mind, I onlyexpose so much about my life,” says recent DePaulLA&S graduate C. Patterson. Some experts also recommend that students create apersonal web site or blog that highlights professionaland academic achievements and includes a resumeand/or portfolio of work. That way, if a prospectiveemployer Googles your name or otherwise searches forinformation about you online, they find a professionalrepresentation of your skills and abilities.Students may also consider actively seeking employersand business connections through networking sites. Some sites, such as LinkedIn.com, are designed tofacilitate business networking opportunities.LinkedIn.com allows members to post their field ofwork as well as their experience. Members can alsopost job openings and apply all on the same website, offering an efficient addition to traditional businessnetworking. The DePaul Career Center’s eRecruitingsystem also has a networking platform called“Experience Connections.” This platform allowsstudents to explore career possibilities, connect withindustry insiders and develop important professionalnetworking skills. To access Experience Connections, log into eRecruiting at depaul.eRecruiting.com andclick the “Experience” tab.Social and business networking sites, blogs, and personalweb sites are now part of most students’ everyday lives. If used correctly, these sites can act as a fun and usefulnetworking strategy. If used carelessly, these sites cancreate unexpected obstacles to career success. ⌖GAIN INTERNSHIP & WORKEXPERIENCEUniversity Internship andCo-op ProgramGet valuable work experience whileyou fulfill your Liberal StudiesExperiential Learning requirementthrough this internship program.Student EmploymentEarn a wage and gain career-relevantexperience through on-campus jobs, internships, or temporary project workthrough Student Temporary Services.BUILD YOUR NETWORKAlumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK)Connect with DePaul Alumnivolunteers who are working inyour field of interest through thismentoring and networking program.Career Networking EventsMeet and learn from workingprofessionals in your field of interestat these events, held throughout theacademic year.Company PresentationsMake contacts and learn aboutcompany cultures at organizationsthat recruit at DePaul.FIND WORKOn-Campus RecruitingApply with top companies online andinterview right here on campus.Job & Internship FairsConnect with hundreds of hiringemployers at multiple fairs throughoutthe academic year.Job & Internship ListingsSearch thousands of open positionsonline in eRecruiting.Online Resume BooksMake your resume available througheRecruiting so employers can findyou when seeking candidates whomatch specific criteria.Relocating as a Job Search Strategy continued from page 1Kim Berg graduated from DePaul in 2005 with aBachelor of Arts in Communication and a minor inMusic Business. After working for a year at theChicago concert venue, Metro, and obtaining oncampusexperience by organizing FEST, she landed aposition in Music Marketing for Nike in Los Angeles. When asked how relocating would benefit her career, she said “by moving from Chicago to Los Angeles towork in the music industry, I am placing myself in theheart of the entertainment business. Working in theregion of the country with the highest volume of[entertainment] business, I am more prone to makecontacts within my field. Networking with experiencedprofessionals is an instrumental tool for success in thisfield.” Berg, currently in the process of moving, encourages job-seekers to “research the area thoroughlybefore moving to make sure that it will be a good fitfor you professionally and personally.” Moreover, shenotes that the long distance interview process “can bevery fast or very slow. Be prepared with as muchinformation as possible in the event that you are askedto make a decision and move unexpectedly.”Rosemary Simon graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor ofArts in English and internship experience in editingand film production. She moved to New York City andobtained externship positions with NYC TV and alocal record label. Simon decided to move to increaseher networking opportunities. “As a commuter student(at DePaul), I felt like I lacked some sort of crucialsocial infrastructure to “network” – and I knew thatNew York was concentrated with other intelligent, hardworking people who could help me get involvedin the two industries I was ultimately interested in –music and publishing.”Krissy Seberhagen graduated in 2003 with a degreein Psychology and relocated to San Diego, California.Saberhagen obtained a position in the advertisingindustry, and positioned her extracurricular experience insoccer to specialize her career. “My experience playingDivision 1 soccer for DePaul certainly influenced myhiring manager. (W)ithin months on the job I acquiredall of the professional sports team accounts including theSan Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, and the BuickInvitational Golf Tournament.” Her combination ofeducation and soccer experience has given Krissy a“candid understanding behind the marketing objectivesof the sports teams’ advertising goals and what solutionis needed to generate a strong response.”Relocation is not for everyone and may not be necessaryfor the majority of DePaul students. Saberhagensuggests that relocation is ideal for those with limitedcommitments and those who enjoy new experiences.“There is no better time to relocate than when yougraduate college because you are still so young. Whathave you go to lose? Step outside of your comfort zoneand be challenged by the unfamiliar. It’s so exciting!Relocating teaches you how to be self-sufficient in away that does not occur at home.”THINKING ABOUT RELOCATING?Before you do, consider these steps:• Set up a meeting with a Career Advisor to discussthe pluses and minuses of relocation.• Research opportunities in eRecruiting. Creativeindustry internships are increasingly available.• Conduct national job research and utilize salarycalculators to determine cost of living comparisons.• Network with alumni in the area using the AlumniSharing Knowledge (ASK) program.• Attend local or regional conferences in your field/industry and visit the local chamber of commerce.• Contact area college and university career centersregarding their reciprocity policy.• Visit the area for at least a few days. ⌖Career Connectionsfall 2006 page 2

The Bottom Line:Interview PreparationCompanies, including on-campus departments and supervisors, increasingly report that candidates are unprepared when theyarrive for an interview. This makes candidates less likely to getthe job offer. How prepared are you to begin interviewing?Sarah Schneider, DePaul’s On-Campus Interviewing Manager, shares tips to help you make a positive impression during theinterview process.Avoid NegativeNetworking continued from page 1The main objective of networking is to leave your contacts with apositive professional impression of yourself. In order to cultivate aconstructive networking relationship with someone, follow these tips:➾ Research your target audience before networking with them.Being well informed and asking thoughtful questions will leavea positive and lasting impression on the professionals you meet.➾ Network in an efficient manner. Be able to introduce yourselfand state your interest in networking with a person in less thanthree minutes.➾ Collect business cards from new contacts. Write the date you metand any other pertinent details, such as what you discussed, onthe back of the card. This will make it easier to remember yourconversation and help you follow-up.➾ Know that there is a right time and place for networking. Donot annoy a professional contact by approaching him or her atan inconvenient or inappropriate time or place, such as a privatefunction or when they’re in the middle of a conversation.➾ Remember, positive networking is a process rather than a onetimeevent. Never ask for a position or favor the first time youmeet with someone. Rather, view networking as an opportunityto learn from and build lasting relationships with like-mindedprofessionals.➾ Send thank you notes or letters. Anyone who has spent timetalking with you about their career or yours deserves a gestureof appreciation.By following these suggestions, you will be able to maintain a levelof assertiveness and confidence, while avoiding being perceived asaggressive and pushy.Looking for networking opportunities? Turn to pages 4-5 for a list of the 2006-2007 Career Networking Events.⌖BEFORE YOUR INTERVIEW1. Review your resume. Before you begin applying, visit a CareerAdvisor to review your resume and decide what companies, positions and fields you want to target.2. Do your research. Know about the position you’re interviewingfor and what the company does. Be sure to research the companywebsite, or if it’s an on-campus job or internship, the departmentor office’s website.3. Do informational interviews and network. Once you knowthe types of positions you’re looking for, take advantage ofnetworking opportunities, such as the Career Center’snetworking events, alumni volunteer mentors, and friends andfamily who can give you insight and information about yourareas of interest.4. Practice interviewing. Being a successful interviewee takespractice. Most companies rely on behavioral interviewing andtechnical interviewing. To learn how to effectively articulate your experiences and skills, attend a Career Center workshop such as Interviewing Skills. You can also practice online using the Career Center’s newPerfect Interview tool, found at careercenter.depaul.edu. PerfectInterview creates a “simulated interview” experience where youare asked challenging questions and must respond, just as youwould in a real job interview. Finally, practice face-to-face in apractice interview session with an Alumni Sharing Knowledge(ASK) mentor.5. Review your contact information. Make sure the email addressand the voice mail on the phone number you provide on yourresume are professional. Additionally, make sure your MySpace,Facebook or other social networking pages, web sites and blogsdisplay professional material. There is increasing evidence thatemployers check social networking sites or Google candidatesprior to making a hiring decision.6. Bring questions to ask the interviewers. Come prepared witha list of questions you’d like to discuss about the availableposition, including job responsibilities and the manager’s orcompany’s expectations for a new employee.THE DAY OF THE INTERVIEW7. Dress professionally. Wear a suit and be ready to meet withinterviewers. Make sure your cell phone is turned off or on silent.8. Arrive on time and bring extra copies of your resume.9. Show enthusiasm. Companies like candidates that seeminterested in working at and growing with their organization.10. During the interview, speak clearly and make good eye contact.Shake hands firmly and thank your interviewer at the end.FOLLOW-UP11. Ask when you can expect to hear back from a companyand then follow up. Send thank you notes to everyone whointerviewed you. Both email and handwritten notes areacceptable. Be sure to ask for business cards at the interviewto ensure you have the correct contact information. To learn more tips on how to be successful in your full-time or part-time jobor internship search, contact the Career Center at (312) 362-8437 or go towww.careercenter.depaul.edu.⌖fall 2006 Career Connections page 3
