DePaul’s career resources can ease the transition

Do you know what you would like to do? Have you looked into any 

companies? Have you thought more about grad school? 

For many graduating seniors - particularly those who are uncertain 

about what life after commencement will bring - these questions may 

be all too familiar. For me and my father, these questions were part of a 

daily routine the summer after I finished college. We would meet in 

the kitchen over breakfast. He’d be getting ready for work; I was 

usually recovering from a late night with other recent grads who were 

all trying hard to postpone the inevitable. I can’t remember if my 

friends and I were celebrating the beginning of a new life or if we were 

desperately clinging to our fading youth before the storm of adulthood 

and responsibility. To be honest, it was probably the latter. 

In time, my father’s questions and suggestions turned into written notes 

and lists. The lists I couldn’t ignore; they were the lists of a person who 

supported me all my life, pushed me to always do more with myself, and 

made it possible for me to enter university and complete my degree. My 

inaction wasn’t because I didn’t want to work. I had been so focused on 

my studies, after graduation I didn’t know how to put my Bachelor of 

Science in Biology to good use. At the time, the small New York 

university I attended didn’t have much of a career center. Internet 

resources were in their infancy, 

so job hunt assistance consisted 

of sorting through stacks of job 

and resume books.

Introducing: My Two Cents DePaul 


My Two Cents DePaul covers topics ranging from splitting 

a sushi bill amongst friends to career networking while 

riding the CTA. “The blog reaches students on a different 

level because we’re using our own experiences,” says Sunia, 

a My Two Cents blogger currently in her third year 

majoring in IT and Psychology. “The job hunting and 

money management topics are contextualized in familiar 

scenarios so students can relate to them better. It’s a fun 

and easy way to read about what you can do and what you 

should avoid in terms of money management and career 

building.“ 

Pilot student bloggers Amanda, Jorge, Taryn, and Sunia 

represent the diverse student body at DePaul. Amanda is a 

senior in the College of Communication minoring in 

Spanish. She has given tips and encouragement to job 

seekers and provided resources for students to consult 

when determining how much money they can earn with 

their type of degree. 

Jorge is an International Studies major graduating this 

June. He has blogged about such topics as escalating food 

prices, calculating tips, socializing with no cash, and 

working overseas as an English teacher. Jorge even used 

search, don’t forget that you can still access Career Center 

resources and attend events as an alumnus. During the 

academic year, consider attending job fairs and networking 

events; they’re a great way to find a position and build your 

network with other working professionals. 

I don’t regret my list- and question-filled post-college 

summer, as it was a learning experience. But I do wonder 

what my life would have been like if I had been better 

prepared for the next step. A little career development 

direction could have saved me a lot of time and my father a 

lot of unanswered questions. �

Korea or Thailand, and sought feedback and insight from 

blog readers. 

Graduate student, Taryn, from the School of Public Service, 

shares her job search and interview experiences. Bolstered by 

the support of her family during the process, she recently 

wrote a tribute blog to her mother whom she calls her 

cheerleader. Taryn encourages all students to “find someone 

who pushes you to try harder, be a better a person, and 

succeed. Find someone who will give you truthful feedback. 

Find someone who has been through the same experience.” 

My Two Cents was created to be not only a resource, but a 

community as well. Visitors to the site are encouraged to 

leave comments offering their own tips and build a 

dialogue. Students, alumni, and faculty have already given 

their suggestions and feedback on the postings.

Student Employee Receives Award For Exceptional 


Work 

The Student Employee of the Year award is given 

annually to the student worker who exemplifies the 

mission of DePaul University and has worked to fulfill 

that mission within their department or office. This 

year’s winner was Yazmin San Miguel of the School of 

Education’s GEARUP program. Yazmin works as a 

Student Advocate and oversees GEARUP programrelated 

activities for students designed to increase 

academic achievement, career development and college 

readiness at Farragut High School. 

When asked why he nominated her for the award, 

Yazmin’s supervisor, Paul J. Reibman said, “DePaul 

University’s mission is dedicated to helping the 

disadvantaged. Yazmin supports this mission in a 

number of ways. Born in Mexico, her father left to 

establish himself before sending for her mother and 

sisters. Her parents raised her with an intimate 

knowledge of Christianity, its values and morals. She is 

a regular volunteer at her church and helps with services. 

Growing up in an immigrant suburb community she 

learned the importance of education for all. She 

witnessed the lack of proper medical care for immigrants 

and decided to go to medical school to provide better 

care for those who need it. In essence, her life is a 

reflection of Vincentian values.” 

Yazmin will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in 

Biological Sciences this June. The DePaul community is 

proud to have a dedicated, committed student and will be 

honored to call Yazmin an alumnus upon her graduation 

in the spring.
