Conference Tours 

The following tours are based on the participation of minimum 15, maximum 25 people for 

the walking tours, minimum 20 and maximum 40 people for the bus tours. 

If the minimum guaranteed number of participants will not be reached by May 31, 2010 

Newtours will suggest alternative tours. 

Please remember that bare shoulder and/or shorts are not allowed inside churches. 

The cost of the tours included an English speaking guide and museum tickets when visited. 

Full day tours include lunch. 

1 - City Centre – (half day on foot) 

Monday, July 5 from 09,30 to 12,30 

The 11th century Baptistery and its famous "Doors 

of Paradise", the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore 

(il Duomo), with its famous dome raised by Filippo 

Brunelleschi, and Giotto's 14th century belltower (il 

Campanile) are the most outstanding monuments in the Cathedral Square and create the religious 

centre of the city. On the other end the political centre is the Signoria Square with the Palazzo 

Vecchio, which is the Town Hall of Florence. Quite impressive is the incredible series of original 

statues (Perseus, Neptune, the Rape of the Sabines, etc.) here, so that the square can be 

considered like an open air museum. Ponte Vecchio, with all its famous jewellery stores, is one 

more world famous monument of Florence. It's the only bridge which is still original and dates 

back to the 14th century. From Ponte Vecchio one of the main streets leads to the Piazza della 

Repubblica, which is a more recent square created in the 19th century, at the time when Florence 

was the capital of Italy, where the centre of the ancient Roman colony of Florentia used to be. It is 

also famous for its many outdoor cafés.

2 - Florentine Hills – (half day by bus) 

Monday, July 5 from 15,00 to 18,00 

Piazzale Michelangelo, located along the “Avenue of 

the Hills” provides an unforgettable view of the city 

but the view one can enjoy from San Miniato Church 

is even more enchanting. This church, with its green 

and white marble facade, is one of the most important examples of Florentine Romanesque 

architecture and it’s surrounded by the typical Tuscan countryside. On the hills overlooking 

Florence to the north, the small historical town of Fiesole, of Etruscan origin, later a Roman town, 

provides a marvellous and truly exhilarating panorama of Florence, the Arno river valley and the 

Tuscan hills.

3 - The Medici Family (half day on foot) 

Tuesday, July 6 from 09,00 to 12,00 

In the three hundred years during which the Medici were the ruling dynasty in 

Florence, they did something really great for the city. 

Thanks to them some of the greatest artists created unique masterpieces such 

as Michelangelo's New Sacristy with the Medici tombs or Brunelleschi's Church 

of San Lorenzo. This tour gives the opportunity to visit both of them as well as 

the Medici-Riccardi Palace, which was the first residence of the family and at the same time the 

first palace of the Renaissance. Their private chapel inside the palace is still perfectly preserved, 

with the fabulous paintings by Benozzo Gozzoli. 


4 - The Uffizi Gallery – (half day on foot) 




Friday, July 9 from 10,00 to 12,00 

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the greatest museums in 

the world. It was founded in 1581 by Francesco I de’ 

Medici, in the magnificent palace designed by Vasari. 

Today the Uffizi contains masterpieces by Italian and 

foreign artists from 13th to 18th century such as Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio, Beato Angelico, 

Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Piero Della Francesca, Raffaello, Caravaggio, along with 

Rubens Rembrandt, Durer, Goya and many others. 


5 - Santa Maria Novella, its District, its Pharmacy (half day on 

foot) 

Wednesday, July 7 from 09,30 to 12,30 

The Dominican friars settled in this area in the 13 th century where they 

built the purest Gothic style church of Florence. Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, 

Filippino Lippi and many other artists embellished it with spectacular art 

works. The monks also distilled herbs and flowers and made essences 

which became world-wide famous over the centuries: this tradition is still 

alive – even if it’s no more carried along by the monks - in the ancient rooms decorated with 

paintings, statues, precious furniture. 

After the visit to the Pharmacy, a walking tour of the area will give the opportunity to admire the 

elegant exterior of the Rucellai Palace, the home of the Rucellai family which had the facade of 

Santa Maria Novella church completed in 1470.

6 - The Academy Gallery – (half day on foot) 




Michelangelo’s David is one of the most admired statues in the 

world. 

Thousands of people every day visit the magnificent hall which 

was purposely built for this masterpiece in order to emphasize its 

beauty. In the same museum there are some other impressive 

works by the great master, such as his unfinished statues called the Captives and also an 

interesting selection of 13th - 16 th century paintings and furthermore an important collection of 

ancient musical instruments. 


7 - Siena and San Gimignano – (full day by bus) 


Drive through the Chianti wine area amidst lovely, ever changing 

scenery of vine clad hills and olive groves to Siena, medieval town 

situated on the hillside between the Arbia and Elsa rivers, birthplace of 

St. Catherine and many famous artists. Visit the Cathedral, the Campo 

Square with the Town Hall, the Church of San Domenico and observe other fine specimens of 

medieval architecture. On the way home visit San Gimignano, a charming little town perched on a 

hilltop and preserved almost intact since the Middle Ages, with its famous towers, precious 

frescoes and other art treasures. Lunch in a typical restaurant in Siena. 


8 - Saving Art Masterpieces: the Cathedral Restoration Laboratory and Museum 

(half day on foot) 

Thursday, July 8 from 09,30 to 12, 

The Opera del Duomo (Cathedral Society) was established in 1296 to build and then to maintain 

the Cathedral. 

Everybody is impressed by the unique marble decoration which covers the exterior of the 

Cathedral and the special opening of its Restoration Laboratory gives a unique opportunity to meet 

one of the stonecutter masters and to see the old tools and traditional methods still used 

nowadays to restore this marble decoration. By the way it’s still the same method which 

Michelangelo himself used: the marks he left behind in the Pietà which is displayed in the 

Cathedral Museum are a clear evidence of this fact. 

The art works which can no more stay outside because they could get damaged are kept inside 

the Duomo like the original, perfectly restored panels of Ghiberti’s Paradise Doors, which were 

replaced by copies outside the Baptistery.

9 - Pitti Palace - (half day on foot) 

Thursday, July 8 from 13,30 to 15,30 


The Pitti palace was the last, really sumptuous residence of the 

Medici Family. It was later the residence of Austrian Grand Duke 

and of the King of Itlay, thus becoming reacher and richer in 

decoration and a model for European royal palaces. Fully 

furnished and lavishly decorated, it contains paintings by Raffaello, Tiziano, Rubens and many 

other great masters. 


10 - Chianti Area – (full day by bus) 


A relaxing drive through the Chianti wine area amidst lovely, ever changing 

scenery of vine clad hills, dotted with olive and cypress trees, little country 

churches, farmhouses, villas and castles, gives the opportunity to see one 

of the most suggestive areas of Tuscany, known all over the world. 

A stop in one of the best Chianti wine estates will give the possibility to 

taste the local wines with country snacks and to visit the wine cellars. 


11 - Masaccio and Churches in the Oltrarno Area - half day on 

foot 


The Church of Santa Felicita, beside the Ponte Vecchio, contains one 

of the greatest masterpieces of Mannerist art: the dramatic 

"Deposizione dalla Croce" by Pontorno. The Church of Santo Spirito, 

built in the 15th century by Brunelleschi, is a splendid example of 

Renaissance architecture hidden behind a very simple façade. It still 

contains a lot of the paintings which were originally made to decorate 

it, which is something very rare to find. The Church of S. Maria del 

Carmine was originally a 13th century Romanesque church, later 

rebuilt after being almost totally destroyed by the fire of 1771. Of the 

surviving chapels, the famous “Cappella Brancacci” boasts one of the 

most solemn monuments of Renaissance painting: the frescoes by Masaccio. 

These outstanding churches are located in the "Oltrarno" area, which is by itself worth a visit for 

its many workshops, where the tradition of Florentine artistic handicraft is still alive. 

The tour includes a stop in a typical outdoor café of the picturesque Santo Spirito Square for a 

refreshing ice cream or a drink.
