It provides theintelligence for predictable throughput, efficient bandwidth utilization, and dataintegrity across any distance.Interconnects Global Enterprisesto Improve Data AvailabilityThe unique buffered architecture and flowcontrol capabilities of the Brocade EdgeM3000 help interconnect remote facilities, regardless of location, to create unifiedstorage networks. Whether it is used fordata sharing, content distribution, ordisaster recovery, the Brocade Edge M3000helps ensure access to data, where andwhen it is needed.Saves Money through More EfficientUse of BandwidthThe unique compression capabilities of theBrocade Edge M3000 can significantly reducethe amount of money spent on telecomlines. Depending upon the compressibilityof the data, the Brocade Edge M3000 cansignificantly reduce bandwidth costs. In addition, the same infrastructure canbe used for synchronous disk mirroringby day and asynchronous tape backup atnight when the bandwidth is underutilized.Using the Brocade Edge M3000 WANsegmentation and adaptive rate limitingcapabilities provides quality of serviceeven in a shared network environment.Combining disk and tape in this way canresult in significant cost savings andoperational efficiencies.Saves Time and Money byLeveraging Existing ResourcesBy leveraging existing Fibre Channel,FICON, and IP infrastructure and skill sets, organizations can avoid the costly andtime-consuming task of adding dedicatedinfrastructure. In turn, they can takeadvantage of lower-cost IP bandwidth, aneasier-to-manage environment, and fasterdeployment of new storage applications.Provides Reliable Data Deliveryover DistanceWhen moving, storing, accessing, or backingup business-critical information, organizationsmust ensure that the information reachesits destination reliably and correctly. Like aninsurance policy against corrupted data, theBrocade Edge M3000 performs CyclicalRedundancy Checking (CRC) at the networklevel to help ensure a constant mirrorwithout interruptions. Moreover, the Brocade Edge M3000 deliversdependable, distance-independent applicationperformance. It combines Fibre Channelswitch buffer credit negotiation with its uniqueflow control and pipelining techniquesacross the network so applicationperformance remains at optimal levelswhether over 10 miles or 10,000 miles.Enables Read and WriteTape PipeliningThe unique Brocade read and write TapePipelining capability, available for both FibreChannel and FICON tape and virtual tapedevices, minimizes the impact of latency onthe sustainable throughput of tape backupand recovery over distance. The Brocade Edge M3000 emulates abuffered device controller and queues upwrite operations remotely to ensure that thenext operation is available to send to thedevice controller as soon as the previousoperation completes. Operations and datain the pipeline are retained in the bufferuntil successful completion. As a result, theremote tape backup system appears local tothe server and is able to sustain performanceover thousands of miles. The read TapePipelining capability works the same way, significantly reducing recovery times overextended distances (see Figure 2).Provides Disk AccelerationIndustry-leading Brocade Fast Writecapabilities dramatically reduce the impactof latency to deliver maximum disk writeperformance over distance. For FICON IBMGlobal Mirror (XRC) environments, Brocadeprovides intelligent emulation assists to helpmanage command and data transmissions, accelerating data flows while maintaining theintegrity of command and acknowledgementsequences.

Automates FailoverIn the event of a link failure in the primarystorage network, the Brocade Edge M3000automatically and seamlessly reroutestraffic to an alternate route, such as aproduction IP network. This is a significantbusiness advantage in environments whereminutes of downtime can translate intothousands or even millions of dollars infines or lost revenue.Supports Dynamic Load LevelingIn redundant configurations, the BrocadeEdge M3000 can split the data load toincrease the amount of data moving acrossthe network. For instance, during third shiftwhen production networks are underutilized, the Brocade Edge M3000 can route apercentage of the data across that link toincrease storage application performance.Another advantage of splitting the load is toavoid investing in a dedicated link, therebysaving thousands of dollars every month.Provides Configuration Flexibilityfor a Variety of RequirementsThe Brocade Edge M3000 providesorganizations configuration flexibility thatenables connectivity to Fibre Channel orFICON protocols; use of IP or ATM networkservices; connectivity to SAN fabrics ordirectly to servers and storage; and pointto-pointor multiple-destination SAN routingconfigurations (see Figure 3).This flexibility supports a variety of storagenetworking infrastructures with differentconnectivity requirements, providing astrategic foundation for the future.SYSTEM AND NETWORKMANAGEMENTThe Brocade Edge M3000 softwaremanagement tools include an easy-to-usegraphical configuration utility and aWeb-based SNMP element managerfor monitoring and controlling Brocaderouting nodes from any PC with anInternet connection.Primary SiteSANBrocadeEdge M3000IP or ATMBrocadeEdge M3000Remote SiteFigure 2.In this remote tape backup/recoverysolution, Brocade read and write TapePipelining enables faster backups andrecoveries to meet shorter backupwindows and recovery objectives.Application/BackupServersBrocadeEdge M3000IP orATMFigure 3.Multipoint routing enables concurrentdata replication to multiplegeographically separated sites forconsistent information sharing.BrocadeEdge M3000BrocadeEdge M3000
