PAKISTANTHE GOLDEN TRADITIONOF JEWELLERY MAKINGThe land that is today Pakistan has had a rich historyand tradition of the craft of jewellery making anddesign. Whether it was the Aryans or Alexander, theMughals or the British, arts and crafts flourishedtremendously in this region and were a major partof the everyday lives of the people. Traces of historyfrom the Indus Valley civilization show evidence ofjewellery making with clay, stones, precious andsemi precious metals. The fabulous splendor of theMughal period was known for exquisite jewellerymaking. The name ‘Mughal’ stirs up the imaginationof enchantment and rich colours. Exquisite jewellerywas made from gold, silver with gems encrustedand enamelled. The finishing of the work of art wasmost important. Today, the art of Indus Valley andthe Mughal period still lives on.THE UNTAPPED WEALTHOF GEMSTONES INPAKISTANPakistan is known for its gemstones throughout theworld. Despite the fact that our exportsare nominal as compared to that of the potential, yetit is worth mentioning that the exports rose fromUS$ 1.5 million in 2001 to US$ 289 million in 2009.INVESTMENT FRIENDLY GOVERNMENT POLICIESGovernment of Pakistan, capitalizing on the Sector's vast natural resources, low labour costs, skilled craftsmen, growing national and international demand and needless to mention, tireless efforts by PGJDC, has takenpotential steps as under:• Reduction of duty on natural pearls and precious / semi precious stones (earlier, this exemption was onlyon natural pearls as well as synthetic or manufactured precious stones).• Exemption of Customs Duty and Sales Tax on import of Diamonds, Pearls and precious / semi-precious gemstones and metals.
