<strong>Trauma</strong> <strong>Focused</strong> <strong>Cognitive</strong> <strong>Behavioral</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong>A <strong>Skills</strong> <strong>Based</strong> Training offered by the Kempe Child <strong>Trauma</strong> Clinic.What is <strong>Trauma</strong>-<strong>Focused</strong> <strong>Cognitive</strong> <strong>Behavioral</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> (TF-CBT)? TF-CBT is a shortterm,evidence-based treatment for children, ages 3 to 18, who have experienced trauma(e.g., child abuse, domestic violence, traumatic grief and other traumatic events) and theircaregivers. This components-based psychotherapy model incorporates trauma-sensitiveinterventions with cognitive behavioral, family, and humanistic principles.TF-CBT isempirically supported for use with youth impacted by trauma and co-occurring mental healthproblems. It is designated a Model Program by SAHMSA’s National Child <strong>Trauma</strong>tic StressNetwork (NCTSN) and has received the highest scientific rating as a Well-Supported-Effective Practice by the California Evidence-<strong>Based</strong> Clearinghouse for Child Welfare(http://www.cachildwelfareclearinghouse.org). Clinical research shows that TF-CBTsignificantly reduces children’s symptoms of PTSD and improves overallmental health in children and caregivers.Description of TF-CBT training: This two-day training will provide mental health and relatedprofessionals with a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT as well as hands-onopportunities to practice each of the TF-CBT components. She is a developmental and child clinicalpsychologist with expertise in child development, child trauma, parent-child communication,and evidence-based mental health treatment. Dr. Shipman also maintains a clinical practicewhich focuses on providing family-based services to children experiencing trauma and otherdifficult events. Dr. Shipman is an expert in <strong>Trauma</strong>-<strong>Focused</strong> <strong>Cognitive</strong> <strong>Behavioral</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong>(TF-CBT) and completed the ‘train-the-trainer’ program in TF-CBT with the developers of TF-CBT.Monica Fitzgerald, Ph.D. is the training and evaluation director of the Child <strong>Trauma</strong> Programat the Kempe Center at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. Dr. Fitzgerald'sclinical and research interests focus on the impact of child abuse and trauma exposure onchildren's psychosocial and emotional adjustment and the implementation of evidence-based,trauma-focused interventions in community service settings. She maintains a clinical practiceand provides trauma-focused treatment to adults, children and families who haveexperienced abuse or other trauma. Dr. Fitzgerald is an expert in <strong>Trauma</strong>-focused <strong>Cognitive</strong><strong>Behavioral</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> (TF-CBT) and completed ‘train-the trainer’ programs in TF-CBT andAbuse-<strong>Focused</strong> <strong>Cognitive</strong> <strong>Behavioral</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> (AF-CBT) to aid in the dissemination of thesetrauma-focused EBTs. She regularly conducts trainings and provides consultationnationwide on these models.
