… 7 Mullabuoy Stone Cross4 Ruins at St Columb’s ParkThe ruins of a small churchof St Brecan’s can be found inthe grounds of the park. Themedieval church here which isalso mentioned in a text of 1397,was known as Cluain Í giving themodern name Clooney to the area.The original church was destroyedin 1197 and these ruins are of asuccessor rebuilt on the site byRedmond O’Gallagher, Bishop of<strong>Derry</strong> in 1585.The large stone cross in Mullabuoygraveyard stands on a formerpenal mass rock base. UnderPenal Law only worship withinthe established Church of Irelandwas recognised; Catholic serviceswere forbidden. People gathered atmass rocks to worship. There wasa church built here in Mullabuoy in1826 which was later demolishedbetween 1966-1971.The original site of the cross wasin nearby Gorticross (‘Field ofthe cross’). There may also havebeen a holy well which suggests itwas an important early <strong>Christian</strong>site. The name of the townland inwhich the cross is situated – Oghillmeans ‘yew-wood’. Yew treeswere revered as sacred in ancientIreland and are often found ingraveyards.… 5 Enagh Church andGraveyardA church seems to have existedhere since early medieval times.Excavation of the nearby Crannóghas uncovered some early<strong>Christian</strong> evidence.The visible ruins within thegraveyard probably date fromaround 1197. Early 17th centuryrecords mention an Erenagh beingbased here. An Erenagh managedchurch property and revenue.… 8 Cumber Old Churchand GraveyardCumber Old Church is associatedwith St Patrick. It had an Erenaghin the late medieval period and itwas the parish church for mostof the Faughan Valley. It lies atthe junction of Cregg Road andCumber Road on the banks of theGlenrandal river.This document is available in a number of alternative formats includinglarge print, Braille, PDF, audiocassette, and minority languages uponrequest.6 Eglinton Old ChurchSt Canice was said to have beenborn in 515 or 516, at Glengiven, inwhat is now County Londonderryand died at Aghaboe in 600. He wassaid to have been a fellow-pupilof Colmcille under St. Finian. Hewas also known as St Cainnechof Aghaboe and gave his name toKilkenny (Cill Cainnech) in Ireland aswell as many places in Scotland. Itis said that Canice helped Colmcilleestablish the monastery on Iona.The ruins in the graveyard date backto 1626. Donegal. The cathedral wasbuilt in 1633 by William Parrott forthe Honourable the Irish Societyin Planter-Gothic style, almostcertainly on the site of a medievalchurch. The foundation stone forthe cathedral includes a smaller,older stone from the Tempull Mór.A stained glass window inthe south-east corner in theArchbishop Alexander Chapelcommemorates Colmcille.This window depicts the storyof Colmcille’s promise never toset foot on Irish soil again, but toattend the Convention of DrumCeat in 575 AD he strapped sodsof Scottish soil to his feet enablinghim to keep his promise. Abullaun stone where Colmcille issaid to have knelt to pray is locatedin the grounds of the Church.Impressive stained glass windows,paintings and mosaics in theChurch tell the story of Colmcille.Colmcille is remembered as a poetand a scribe. The oldest survivingIrish manuscript – a copy of thepsalms known as the Cathachmay have been made by him.According to legend the makingof the Cathach was the firstrecorded breach of copyright inIreland leading to the battle of CúlDreimhne in 561 AD. Colmcille hadsecretly copied the book withoutpermission which led to thebattle. Inside the church there is afacsimile copy of the Book of Kells,an illuminated manuscript createdby Columban monks in Iona andcompleted at Kells. This is theproposed site for the Áras CholmCille Interpretative Centre.
