Its 1916 beaux arts design by Henry<br />
Hornbostel placed it on the National<br />
Register <strong>of</strong> Historic Places. A 1985<br />
interior renovation was designed by celebrated<br />
postmodernist architect Michael<br />
Graves, who returned in 1993 to design<br />
a thirty-five thousand square-foot expansion,<br />
which opened to great critical<br />
acclaim. A dramatic renovation <strong>of</strong> the<br />
permanent collection galleries <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />
Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern<br />
art opened in 2001. The distinguished<br />
ancient American holdings were unveiled<br />
in the newly renovated galleries in 2002<br />
and celebrated in the publication <strong>of</strong> an<br />
acclaimed catalog.<br />
The Carlos Museum’s hours are<br />
Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to<br />
4:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00<br />
p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. The<br />
Carlos is closed Mondays and university<br />
holidays. Admission is free for students.<br />

The Carter Center<br />
The Carter Center, in partnership with<br />
Emory, advances peace and health world-<br />
wide. Its programs, which are guided by<br />
a fundamental commitment to human<br />
rights and the alleviation <strong>of</strong> human<br />
suffering, have helped to improve life<br />
for people in more than seventy countries.<br />
The center seeks to prevent and<br />
resolve conflicts, enhance democracy,<br />
and improve health. Center programs<br />
merge the knowledge <strong>of</strong> the academy<br />
with action-oriented programs in the<br />
United States and the developing world.<br />

Jimmy Carter, a University Distinguished<br />

brings to campus a wide range <strong>of</strong> international<br />
scholars and world leaders.<br />
In this way, the center has strengthened<br />
democracies in Asia, Latin<br />
America, and Africa, including observing<br />
sixty-seven elections in twenty-six<br />
countries; helped farmers double or<br />
triple grain production in fifteen African<br />
countries; mediated or worked to prevent<br />
civil and international conflicts;<br />
intervened to prevent unnecessary<br />
diseases in Latin America and Africa,<br />
including the near-eradication <strong>of</strong> Guinea<br />
worm disease; and strived to diminish<br />
