PETERSBURG BRIDGE CLUB HAS GREAT RESPONSE TO OPEN HOUSEOn Monday January 8, St. Petersburg Bridge Club conducted an open houseto introduce the club to bridge players in the area and to those in the area whowanted to learn how to play bridge.Postcards, advertising the event, were sent to all ACBL members in PinellasCounty who had not played at the club recently and the event was also promotedin advertisements for beginner bridge lessons in the St. Petersburg Times. The event was held from 6:00 to 7:00, the hour before the evening’s game, andmore than 40 people came to find out about the club and its lessons. The club served wine, coffee, hors d’oeuvres and desserts.Several attendees signed up for classes and 5 pairs decided to stay and playthat night. Many others expressed an interest in coming back to play. The club was very pleased with the response. Approximately 75 people weresigned up for lessons which began the week of the open house.THE VISITORS by John DoughThe visitors, Don and EricaRottweiler appeared at our local clubthis evening for an IMP pair game. The game seemed very tight until thelast board of the evening. These were the North/South hands:NORTH♠AJ52♥K543♦10♣A763SOUTH♠K7♥A8♦AKQJ64♣K92We bid to 6 NT and made six for1440 (the common result) when the♠ finesse failed. When I opened thetraveler I noticed that Erica had bidand made 7 NT for 2220! After Westhad bid a weak two ♥ overcall, Donholding the South cards, found thatthey had all the aces and kings and bidthe grand slam in no trump. Erica(North) played the hand. The playwent ♥ to the K, 10 of ♦s and a ♥to the ace (east showed out). Fourrounds of ♦s followed (west hadone) leading to this ending:NORTH♠AJ5♥5♦ -♣A7SOUTH♠K7♥ -♦6♣K93Erica now confident that west hadonly two ♣s left cashed the two ♣sending in the South hand. The lead ofthe last ♦ resulted in an automaticdouble squeeze. West had to hold a ♥so declarer pitched the ♥5 andsqueezed East in the black suits. Ifyou cash the sixth ♦ early or play thewrong black suit after the fifth ♦, thesqueeze fails. Not surprising, the visitorswere winners.(to be continued!)34 ACBL - District 9www.District9ACBL.org 35
