Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Chair-elect NominationLeon McDougle, M.D., M.P.H.Associate Dean, Diversity and InclusionThe Ohio State University College of MedicineMotivation for GDI Chair-elect candidacyService as GDI Chair-elect is aligned with my aspirational goals of workforce diversity andelimination of health care disparities. The former Minority Affairs Section and current Group onDiversity and Inclusion have benefited greatly from a legacy of strong national leadership. Thestrength of diversity leadership is measured by the effectiveness of cross-cultural collaboration. My demonstrated ability to forge cross-cultural collaborative partnerships will facilitate creationof programing and policy to advance health equity. In addition, I plan continued cultivation ofpartnerships with groups and organizations who share our mission, e.g. NIH, which shares ourcommitment for diversity in training the next generation of clinician scientist.Leadership related to GDI national prioritiesFaculty Diversity and InclusionAs a clinician educator who values collaboration, I have identified opportunities to lead andpromote partnerships that have led to externally funded research and training grants. For example,by participating in a 2007 Research in Medical Education (RIME) networking session at theAAMC conference I was able to form a partnership based on a common interest in facultydiversity with Dorothy Andriole, MD, Assistant Dean for Medical Education at WashingtonUniversity School of Medicine and Kimberly Ephgrave, MD, Professor of Surgery at theUniversity of Iowa. This partnership was expanded to include the University of Michigan,Michigan State University and Southern Illinois University and has resulted in AAMC fundingfor collaborative research and numerous presentations and the publication entitled, VariablesAssociated With Full-time Faculty Appointment Among Contemporary U.S. Medical SchoolGraduates: Implications for Academic Medicine Workforce Diversity, Academic Medicine 2010.My research has focused on workforce development and community-based behavioralmodification projects aimed at decreasing health care disparities. This work has resulted ininternational and national presentations followed by peer reviewed publications. One such articleis entitled, Survey of Care for the Underserved: A Control Group Study of Practicing PhysiciansWho Were Graduates of The Ohio State University College of Medicine PremedicalPostbaccalaureate Training Program, was published in the January 2010 edition of AcademicMedicine. This was the first control group study reported in the literature regarding the long-termservice outcomes of premedical postbaccalaureate program graduates. Findings suggested that ourMEDPATH postbaccalaureate graduates were more likely to be practicing medicine in a federallyAAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-16-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Central Region Representative NominationWe are also in the process of designing a "grow your own faculty" approach working closely withGME to prepare and connect diverse residents with job openings. In addition, I oversaw a plan toenhance cultural competency content and teaching within the current medical school curriculum.GDI has been involved in developing a comprehensive data set to better understand diversitytrends. It has also been concerned with the issue "pipelines" throughout the healthcare continuum.I have had experience in both of these efforts. I recently led an initiative to develop a data set andcommon metrics to be used to assess progress in diversity initiatives in all four UMKC healthscience schools, including dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy. My office operates two health career"pipeline" programs-- Saturday Academy and Summer Scholars Programs. Under my leadership, the number of URM medical school applicants and matriculates has increased. I have also beeninvolved in a variety of policy matters in my role of chair of the UMKC School of MedicineDiversity Council. I also chair the Hospital Hill Diversity Council (all UMKC health scienceschools and hospital affiliates). In an effort lecture and workgroup series entitled "Advancing theHealth of Urban Communities" in which I organized work sessions for all health science schoolson diversity-related recruitment, retention and leadership strategies and best practices. While relatively new to AAMC, I am not a newcomer to issues of diversity and inclusion. Alicensed clinical psychologist, consultant and former healthcare administrator, I have beeninvolved in diversity-related issues from the inception of my career. Some highlights of keyexperiences have included diversity-related change management initiatives, working with threepublic school superintendents to manage change and conduct training when the demographiccomposition of their school districts shifted rapidly. Similarly, I assisted the Central Region ofthe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in developing and implementing a diversity-relatedcurriculum and train-the trainer model for mid and upper management. As a former administratorof a large urban community mental health center/Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Ideveloped and implemented a wide variety of culturally-specific programming designed to meetthe needs of specific patient populations. Taken together, these experiences have provided mewith a depth and breadth of experience pertinent to diversity in health and behavioral healthcare,education/training, and systems change. If chosen to be the Central Region GDI Representative, Iwould leverage these experiences to assist GDI in advancing its diversity goals and objectiveswithin AAMC. Even if I am not selected, I look forward to becoming even more involved inassisting GDI in reaching the vision and mission it has set forth.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-20-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Northeast Region Representative NominationAnthony R. Rodriguez, M.D.Associate Dean, Student Affairs and DiversityDrexel University, College of MedicineI grew up in Los Angeles, the product of a single parent family. I attended Loyola MarymountUniversity as an undergraduate, majoring in Biology with a Classics Minor. I was part of theDrew/UCLA program and earned my medical degree in 1989. Following that, I completed aresidency in family medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital outside Philadelphia. My medical career has been an incredible experience, giving me the privilege and pleasure oftaking care of many types of patients and conditions. I worked with the Mazzoni Center inPhiladelphia as a board member and also as the founding medical director for their LGBTAmbulatory Care Center, providing the first LGBT primary care center in Philadelphia. On a personal level, my husband (an African-American, Ivy League-trained attorney) and I havebeen together 27 years this month, and are in the process of finalizing the adoption of our 22 yearoldson who came to our lives when he was 17.After 14 years in private practice, in 2006, Dr. Samuel Parrish approached me about taking aposition at Drexel University College of Medicine as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs andDiversity. I had no idea what this meant, but soon discovered that there was much going on in theworld of diversity. I started speaking with colleagues in other schools and connected with Dr.Charles Terrell at the AAMC. He came to speak to our faculty; following this, Drexel and theUniversity of Arizona were asked to be the Pilot Schools for the Holistic Review Pilot Program. This project enabled us to become one of the thought leaders in the Holistic Review Admissionsprocess; I serve as one of the facilitators for the AAMC’s Holistic Admissions Workshops. Mywork as a Student Affairs Dean also lets me understand the curricular and personal issues thataffect medical students and medical education.Currently, at Drexel, our school has been working on expanding its diversity policies at theUniversity level, and enhancing our outreach to recruit, retain, reward and encourage a morediverse, energetic faculty staff and student body.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-21-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Northeast Region Representative NominationThe Group on Diversity and Inclusion’s work needs to focus not just on improving diversity inthe medical field, but also on building on that diversity as a positive, to add new experiences andto improve learning and cultural sensitivity to our profession. Diversity, however, is not just anissue of bringing more and broader elements to the table. It is also about inclusion andwelcoming everyone to the discussion and the educational playing field. As you can see from the above, my life has had many interesting and varied experiences. Theseexperiences have made me a very well-rounded, energetic, passionate, compassionate, patient andcoordinated physician/dean/husband/father/board member/person. For these reasons, I have agood handle on many of the issues currently facing the Group on Diversity and Inclusion as wellas the many issues that will shape its development and its interactions with the other Groupswithin the AAMC and other aspects of medical education.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-22-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Southern Region Representative NominationAndre L. Churchwell, M.D., FACCAssociate Dean for Diversity in Graduate Medical Education and Faculty AffairsAssociate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology)Associate Professor of Radiology and Radiological SciencesAssociate Professor of Biomedical EngineeringVanderbilt University School of MedicineI have participated in the AAMC for many years in various capacities. In the late 1980s, I createdthe Office of Minority Affairs at Emory University School of Medicine. With assistance fromMorehouse, Spellman and Morris Brown Colleges, we developed a summer NIH-HCOP program. This initiative enabled me to create a Summer College Science Enrichment Program for pre-medstudents from HBCU schools. Furthermore, we housed them on the Emory campus.Recently, I have become involved with the GDI at its national meetings. I have presented at thenational AAMC meetings on diversity in 2008 and 2009. The 2009 session meeting was apresentation that highlighted our beginning efforts on a Vanderbilt Medical Center Diversity Plan.Dean Jeff Balser and I spent a number of months meeting and learning about the successfulmedical-center-wide diversity plan put forth by MUSC under the leadership of Dean Jerry Reavesand Associate Dean, Deborah Deas. Our plan for VUMC incorporates goals for housestaff and faculty recruitment in our yearly Chairand Center Directors' assessments and incentive plans. It is by emphasizing diversity as a strengththat makes us a better university community and aids us in solving unique problems that peopleof different races and ethnicities bring to the decision-making table.Lastly, I have participated in the plan to develop an Office of Health Equity and Inclusion at ourChildren's Hospital. The hospital leadership and I see this as fertile ground to advance culturalsensitivity and awareness training for our staff and ensuring that health equity is part of the fabricof how the hospital takes care of children and families of all racial and ethnic groups. These examples are a few I can site that exemplify my commitment to diversity and inclusion atthe medical school and university levels.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-23-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Western Region Representative NominationAnn-Christine “Chris” Nyquist M.D., M.S.P.H.Associate Dean, Diversity and InclusionUniversity of Colorado School of MedicineSocial justice, diversity and inclusion and elimination of health disparities have long been part ofmy professional and personal worlds. I would be honored to be considered to serve as the GDIRegional Representative for the Western Region to continue to contribute to this work. As anewer member of GDI I understand the challenges stepping into a new setting with a new groupthat has a bold mission. I would like to work to increase the inclusiveness of GDI and to helpsupport the growth and development of all GDI members to further enhance our work on anational and regional basis. I have the time and passion to represent the Western region and worktowards furthering the GDI strategic plan.As the first Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado I have experienced thechallenges and successes associated with establishing a brand new Office of Diversity andInclusion and developing a Diversity Council to enhance community ties and utilize an oversightbody. To date I have implemented a comprehensive work plan to meet LCME accreditationchallenges surrounding Diversity and Inclusion standards. Last spring, I helped organize andspearhead a Conference on Health Disparities that has increased our partnerships within academiaand most importantly within the community. Additionally, I am directing a working group to planfor a collaborative Center for Health Disparities Research which will bridge colleges, departmentinstitutes and centers on the medical campus to integrate current work and research on healthdisparities and health equity. The initial work of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion has focused on pipeline programs andthe matriculating medical school class composition. My office has teamed closely with theAdmissions office and other undergraduate medical education groups to help remarkably increasethe overall diversity of this year’s medical school class. Of the 160 first year medical students wehave over one third of the students underrepresented in medicine with almost 50 percentreflecting our definitions of diversity to include rural, first generation students, andsocioeconomic status. As a former member of the Pediatric Residency selection committee Ihelped to develop a more holistic review process of the Pediatric intern applicants. Thiscomprehensive holistic review has helped to support the development of the Diversity inPediatrics Committee which helps to recruit underrepresented in medicine medical students to theUniversity of Colorado/Children’s Hospital Colorado Residency Program.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-24-

Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI)GDI Western Region Representative NominationA cornerstone of this project has been a one month elective scholarship program for fourth yearmedical students who would like to serve underserved populations. For two years the compositionof the intern class has greatly increased diversity of the highest caliber. This project is providing atemplate for our internal medicine and family medicine programs who also seek to increase thediversity of their post graduate programs.Developing collaborative and innovative programs that promote diversity and inclusion is apassion of mine. This is evidenced by my work with children, homeless and LGBT youth andother underserved populations. As an example in 1997, I started the CHIP Youth Project at CHCto serve HIV-infected youth. I started with a staff of one, myself, and I treated four patients. Afterten years of steady work, which had included collaborations with local public health officials,HIV and youth community activists, politicians, legislators, HIV clinicians, and agencies servingyouth, managing staff transitions and treating an expanding population of clients, the CHIP YouthProject now provides care for over 100 youth, offers HIV testing, and organizes HIV awarenesseducation programs throughout Colorado. In addition to the experiences I have described above, my community service has enhanced myleadership skills and allowed me to develop vital connections that reflect my ability to establishand cultivate community collaborations. I worked with the Urban Peak Homeless and RunawayShelter from 1997 to 2005 as an outreach physician and Board Member. From 2002 to 2004, Iserved as the Board Chair of the organization and oversaw a two million dollar budget and thecreation of a partnership with another nonprofit agency also serving young people at risk. Mycommunity service has included local, statewide, and national boards for such organizations asthe Interagency Health Disparities Leadership Council, the Caring for Colorado Foundation, andthe Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).I look forward to the opportunity to be of service to GDI and the Western region and would likeyour support to represent you as your regional representative.AAMC Annual Meeting, 2011Denver, CO-25-
