<strong>Golfer</strong>’s <strong>and</strong> Tennis <strong>Elbow</strong> 2 of <strong>the</strong> most common golf <strong>in</strong>juries to <strong>the</strong>elbow• tennis > golfer’s frequency 5:1 Tennis elbow = outside/lateral elbow <strong>Golfer</strong>’s elbow = <strong>in</strong>side/medial elbow Beh<strong>in</strong>d lower back pa<strong>in</strong>, lead arm tenniselbow is 2 nd most common golf <strong>in</strong>jury


Tennis <strong>and</strong> <strong>Golfer</strong>’s <strong>Elbow</strong> <strong>Common</strong> Causes:• Faulty sw<strong>in</strong>g mechanics• Faulty lower body sequenc<strong>in</strong>g• Repetitive stress• Increase grip pressure• Decreased grip diameter• Steel vs. graphite shafts


Tennis <strong>Elbow</strong> Usually occurs on<strong>the</strong> lead arm (leftarm for rightys <strong>and</strong>right arm for leftys) Test for it bystraighten<strong>in</strong>g elbow:• extend<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>gers,resist<strong>in</strong>g middle f<strong>in</strong>gerextension• resist<strong>in</strong>g wristextension• Resist sup<strong>in</strong>ation(palm-up) motion


Causes:• Faulty Sw<strong>in</strong>g MechanicsTennis <strong>Elbow</strong>○ “Chicken W<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g” or “Cupp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Lead Wrist atImpact”• Need sw<strong>in</strong>g coach help• Dysfunctional Lower Body <strong>and</strong>/or Trunk○ Sequence coord<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> transition <strong>and</strong> weight shift<strong>in</strong>gissues○ Mobility/stability issues of ankles, knees, hips, trunk• Need physical <strong>the</strong>rapist help


<strong>Golfer</strong>’s <strong>Elbow</strong> Usually occurs <strong>in</strong>trail arm (right armfor rightys <strong>and</strong> leftarm for leftys) Test for it bystraighten<strong>in</strong>g elbow:• Resist<strong>in</strong>g wrist flexion• Resist<strong>in</strong>g forearmrotation <strong>in</strong>to pronation(palm down)


Causes:<strong>Golfer</strong>’s <strong>Elbow</strong>• Faulty Sw<strong>in</strong>g Mechanics○ Cast<strong>in</strong>g or an Over-<strong>the</strong>-Top sw<strong>in</strong>g fault○ Repetitive overuse• Hitt<strong>in</strong>g a root or a rock caus<strong>in</strong>g trauma towrist flexors


Conservative <strong>Treatment</strong> Acutely (first 1-3 weeks) PT focuses ondecreas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>flammation us<strong>in</strong>g modalities (ice,phonophoresis, iontophoresis), gentle stretch<strong>in</strong>g,brac<strong>in</strong>g/tap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> rest Subacutely (beyond 4 weeks) PT focuses oncont<strong>in</strong>ued modalities for <strong>in</strong>flammation control,more aggressive stretch<strong>in</strong>g, massage/deepfriction, gentle load<strong>in</strong>g activities Chronically (beyond 3 months) PT focuses onASTYM, eccentric focused load<strong>in</strong>g activities,cont<strong>in</strong>ued stretch<strong>in</strong>g


Conservative <strong>Treatment</strong> Full body movement screen to f<strong>in</strong>d outwhat o<strong>the</strong>r body regions can be driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>elbow overload Golf sw<strong>in</strong>g analysis look<strong>in</strong>g atbiomechanics <strong>and</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g sw<strong>in</strong>g faults Communication with sw<strong>in</strong>g coach aboutf<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs Sleep position changes
