Transrapid Berlin - Hamburg maglev train
Section G2 Schleswig-Holstein
Transrapid maglev train (test site in Emsland)
This maglev line, with a total length of
291 km, is planned to run from Hamburg
to Berlin through the federal states of
Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western
Pomerania and Brandenburg. Passenger
trains will reach a speed of 450
km/h and travel non-stop or with a single
stop in Schwerin, cutting the journey time
from Hamburg to Berlin from three hours
to one hour.
The total costs for the project, which was
planned from 1994 to 2000, are estimated
at 4,9 billion Euros, whereby the track
and stations would cost 3,05 billion Euros,
the remaining ca. 1,85 billion Euros
for systems technology and vehicles.
The Transrapid maglev was the first major
“private public partnership” project in
Germany. A large number of public and
private institutions were involved.
Among other tasks, Krebs und Kiefer
was responsible for the outline design
planning and for the production of the
public planning procedure documents
(authorization planning) in the Schleswig-Holstein
section. Its activities included
object planning, structural design,
coordination of equipment planning, project
support, cost and schedule planning
as well as support for public relations
work and for the public hearings procedure.
Overall planning
Transrapid Berlin - Hamburg maglev train
Section G2 Schleswig-Holstein
In addition to the pure planning tasks, a
main focus of the project was on coordination
and management. Many expert reports
and results of specialist planning
work, e.g. on geology, hazardous waste,
environmental impact, noise and vibrations,
technical equipment of the line,
energy supply and temporary measures
for construction logistics purposes were
integrated and matched during numerous
meetings in order to ensure seamless
planning.
An important prerequisite for the construction
of a successful high-tech transportation
facility is the choice of the best
possible route layout. For this purpose,
Krebs und Kiefer evaluated aerial photos
of the terrain which had been transformed
into a digital terrain using the latest
computer technology.
Existing settlements, buildings and infrastructure
were taken into consideration
in the planning process, as were environmental
and cost criteria, in order to identify
the best position for the new line which
was to be in close proximity to the existing
A24 motorway. As a result, the line
crosses the motorway in two places at a
very oblique angle.
The large numbers of traffic routes crossing
the line make high demands on the
planning and construction of the required
civil engineering structures. In the
Schleswig-Holstein section, the two flyovers
over the motorway, the Billetal bridge
(needed to cross the Billetal nature reserve
and flora and fauna habitats in the
area) and the bridge over the Elbe-
Lübeck canal are of special interest.
For these structures, difficult structural
and construction issues (deformation limits,
poor subsoil) have to be solved and
demanding requirements on design,
cost-effectiveness and environmental acceptability
must be fulfilled.
Informing the public about the progress
of the planning process is another important
factor in successful project management.For
this purpose, the planning documents
are sent to the affected rural dis-
Cross-section of the maglev overpass over the Elbe-Lübeck canal
tricts, towns/villages and relevant authorities,
and many public information
events held locally. This gives all the affected
parties the opportunity to find out
about the project at an early stage, which
helps to optimize the handling of the authorization
process. The results from this
preparatory project agreement phase
are integrated into the outline design
planning and the public planning procedure.
Krebs und Kiefer's planning work also includes
support for the public planning procedure.
All objections are documented,
analyzed and addressed individually
using a special objection processing system.
Krebs und Kiefer took part in the hearings
and explanatory meetings, preparesfor
these and provided support for the
preparation of the public planning decisions.
