The following recommendationsare made to assist the field finisher.12Prior to finishing, ensure that thebuilding atmosphere is dried to a normal, interior relative humidity. Ensurethat the doors have been allowed toequalize to a stable moisture content.Prior to finishing, remove allhandling marks, raised grain andother undesirable blemishes bycompletely block or power sandingall surfaces with a 100-150fine-grit sandpaper. Place doorsin a horizontal position and sandwith the grain of the wood. Ifany undesirable reactions orproblems arise, stop finishingand notify your door supplierimmediately.456789Certain species of wood, particularlyoak, contain chemicals whichreact unfavorably with certainfinishes causing dark stain spots.Where possible, the species/finishcombination should be tested priorto finishing the doors. Notify yourfinish supplier or door supplierimmediately if any undesirablereaction is noticed. Do not continuewith the finishing until theproblem is resolved. In order not to induce warpage, avoid dark stains or dark-coloredpaints on door surfaces. Exposure tosunlight or artificial Light can causewarpage. In order to prevent blemish magnification, avoid extremely dark stainson light-colored wood species.Top and bottom rails are factorysealed on all Heritage flush wooddoors. No additional sealing isrequired unless field-trimmed inheight. To achieve the desired results ofcolor uniformity, finish build, gloss, and to reduce the frequency ofrefinishing, obtain and follow finishmanufacturer’s recommendations.Be sure the door surface beingfinished is satisfactory in bothsmoothness and color after eachcoat before you apply the nextcoat.Never remove fire label fromthe hinge stile of a door.2

<strong>VT</strong> Installation and MaintenanceInstallation:Field Fitting Doors:Door Tolerances:123The utility or structural strength ofthe doors must not be impaired infitting to the opening, in applyinghardware or in preparing for lites, louvers or plant-ons or otherdetailing.Use a minimum of one hingefor each 30” of door height onall solid core doors. When usingthree or more hinges, they are tobe equally spaced.Clearances are maximum 1/8” attop, at hinge and at lock stiles. Referto NFPA 80, latest edition, forbottom clearances. All hardwarelocations, preparations for hardware, and methods of hardwareattachment must be appropriatefor the specific door construction.Templates for specific hardwarepreparation are available fromhardware manufacturers, WDMA,or DHI.For best results, doors should beordered prefit and premachined fromthe factory. However, in instanceswhere doors need to be field fit, pleasefollow these guidelines:Non-Rated Doors – A minimum 3/4”rail material should be left indoors.Doors may be ordered with wider railsfor adjustments on the jobsite. Sealany and all field-cut edges.Fire-Rated Doors – These doors may betrimmed slightly at the bottom rail. Mostrequired machining must be performedby <strong>VT</strong> or a licensed machiner of <strong>VT</strong>fire-rated doors. Refer to NFPA 80, latestedition, for more specific informationregarding jobsite preparation of firerateddoors.Surface-Applied Hardware – Specialblocking is recommended for use withsurface-applied hardware if throughboltsaren’t utilized. In cases where nothrough-bolting is allowed, hardwareshould be installed with wood screws, and pilot holes must be drilled prior toinstallation. DO NOT use self-tappingor combination wood/metal screws.Show-Through (Telegraphing) –Considered a defect when the face ofthe door varies from a true plane inexcess of 0.010” in any 3” span. Glossylaminates or finishes should be avoidedbecause they tend to accentuatenatural telegraphing.Warp – Any distortion in the door itself;not measured in relation to the frame inwhich it is hung. Warp is measured byplacing a straight edge or a taut stringon the concave face and determiningthe maximum distance from straightedge or string to door face. For moreinformation regarding door tolerances, refer to the <strong>VT</strong> Standard Door Warranty.General Maintenance:12Ensure that doors continue toswing freely, do not bind in theframe and that all hardware remainsfunctional.Using wedges to hold open doorsmay result in damage to the doorface. More importantly, wedgingfire doors open is a life safetyissue and a code violation.Damage caused by the use ofwedges is not covered under<strong>VT</strong>’s warranty, and <strong>VT</strong> is notresponsible for the illegal useof wedges or other items tohold open fire doors.4
