Saleable <strong>steel</strong> productionof 230731 tonnes during the year has beenthe highest ever since inception with arecord capacity utilization of 132% and agrowth of 26% over the previous year. Thishighest production consists of 58788tonnes of <strong>stainless</strong> <strong>steel</strong> and 171943tonnes of carbon <strong>steel</strong> products.Sales during the year has also been highestever at 224581 tonnes with a growthof 13% over previous year. Out of this,55352 tonnes have been <strong>stainless</strong> <strong>steel</strong>which includes 6153 tonnes of Export and169229 tonnes have been carbon <strong>steel</strong>.In the Techno economic front, lowest everelectrical energy consumption of 171 unitsper tonne and lowest LPG consumptionof 37 kg per tonne have been achieved inHot Rolling Mill.These achievements have been possibledue to full involvement and commitmentof employees and various innovationscarried out to improve the operationalefficiency of the Plant.Government clears SAILSEZ at Salem<strong>Steel</strong> Authority of India Ltd (SAIL)’sproposal to set up a Special EconomicZone (SEZ) at Salem has been givenformal clearance by the Board of Approval(BoA) of the Ministry of Commerce in itsmeeting held in New Delhi on January 2.Earlier, SAIL has signed a memorandumof understanding with IL&FS Infrastructure<strong>Development</strong> Corporation (IIDC) forforming a special purpose vehicle (SPV)to develop and operate an SEZ for the<strong>steel</strong> sector at Salem in Tamil Nadu. Asper the proposed SPV, SAIL and IIDCwould hold equity in equal proportion.SAIL, which will provide land for the SEZadjoining its <strong>steel</strong> plant at Salem, will playthe role of an anchor by providingcustomised <strong>steel</strong> products to prospectiveunits that come up in the SEZ. These unitswould manufacture architectural facades,railway applications, dairy plants,chemical and pharmaceutical plants,machines for the food processingindustry, tubes and pipes, autocomponents, panels for lifts, etc.Source: Press release from SSP
