These institutions bridge divides between sectorsof the economy, between socioeconomic classes andbetween cultural, political, ethnic, and religious groups inways that unite rather than divide communities.Our accomplishments include helping create the firstcross-border initiative in building philanthropic infrastructurealong the US-Mexico border, described on page8, as well as the first locally controlled grantmaking foundationssupporting community development in Ecuador,Mozambique and Zimbabwe.Today <strong>Synergos</strong> offers a range of services to new andemerging grantmaking institutions around the world, aswell as to funding partners that share our goals of strengtheninglocal philanthropic capacity. These services, whichinclude conducting feasibility studies and research, providingconsultancies, organizing training and workshops,and conducing studies tours and learning exchanges, addressissues such as:• Formation and governance• Program development and administration• Resource mobilization and asset building• Communications• Leadership and personal development• Partnership building.Most of these services are provided by the SeniorFellows – leaders from some of the world’s most successfuland innovative development foundations and philanthropicsupport organizations. Fellowsserve as peer consultants to foundations and other grantmakinginstitutions around the world. University for a NightAN EVENING OF SHARING AND LEARNINGEach year since 1997, University for a Night bringstogether leaders from around the world to discusscritical problems. Through a plenary discussion,a question-and-answer session and discussions overdinner, participants share ideas on how to addresspoverty, inequity, environmental degradation andconflict. They also honor individuals or organizationswhose work exemplifies what the evening is about– building bridges across traditional boundaries tocreate a better world – with the David RockefellerBridging Leadership Awards.The overall theme of the <strong>2004</strong> event was newapproaches to solving complex global problems.The Bridging Leadership Awards were presented tothe Foundation for Community Development ofMozambique and John C. Whitehead, a former USDeputy Secretary of State and chair of the InternationalRescue Committee.University for a Night <strong>2005</strong> brought attention notonly to partnerships to address critical problems, butalso to issues of democracy and security, with speakersincluding former President of the Philippines CorazonC. Aquino and former World Bank President James D.Wolfensohn (who each received the David RockefellerBridging Leadership Award), as well as Nigeriandemocracy advocate Hafsat Abiola-Costello, DeputyPrime Minister of Thailand Surakiart Sathirathai, andincoming <strong>Synergos</strong> President Robert H.
