ROUND BY ROUND WRAP
ROUnD 1 – Steel Blue Oval
loss to east perth 16.11 (107) to 18.14 (122)
Swan Districts premiership defence saw it fight
back from a 15-point quarter-time and sevenpoint
half-time deficit to play an outstanding
third term to lead at the final change, but East
Perth finished the stronger to win by 15 points.
Before the game commenced the 2010
premiership flag was unfurled and raised up
the flag pole on centre wing in front of the
members. Last year’s premiership coach Brian
Dawson was on hand along with President
Peter Harvey. Also on hand were members of
the 1961 premiership team as they celebrate
the 50th anniversary of that triumph.
As for the game itself, even without Ashley
Hansen and with Adam Hunter having to
spend time down back to counter East Perth’s
potent forward-line, Tony Notte and Tim
Geappen provided good targets for Swans.
Notte finished with four goals and Geappen
three. Fremantle rookie Clancee Pearce was
the standout performer of the day for Swan
Districts, though, as he collected a team-high
25 possessions, took 15 marks and kicked two
goals.
ROUnD 2 – Claremont Oval
Loss to Claremont 12.7 (79) to 17.16 (118)
Swan Districts started the grand final rematch
on fire opening up a 15-point quarter-time
advantage, but by the last term the Tigers took
control and kicked six goals to one to win by
39 points.
Jarrhan Jacky put in a strong display in just
his second game with Swan Districts with
four goals from 15 possessions and six marks.
Geappen booted four goals and Notte added
two with Hansen still to return. Tom Roach
worked hard for 22 possessions while in
the back-line veteran Tallan Ames was good
defensively as usual, and also did well picking
up 22 disposals and taking 12 marks.
RoUND 3 – Arena Joondalup
loss to West perth 13.8 (86) to 15.13 (103)
While Swan Districts went down to West
Perth by 17 points to slip to 0-3 to start their
premiership defence, 17-year-old Dayle Garlett
was impressive on debut at league level with
three goals.
There were other positives as well with Hansen
returning from a hamstring strain to play his
first game of the season and to kick two goals.
The newest signing by the club, Kyle Hams, a
16
106-game and dual premiership veteran from
South Fremantle, lined up in the reserves and
looked good with 19 possessions.
Captain Josh Roberts was simply outstanding
with a game-high 35 possessions. Roach
continued his strong start to the season
collecting 32 disposals with defender Luke
Miles having 28 touches and Pearce 22. Alex
James lined up against the team he played 23
league games with over three seasons and did
well to finish with 23 disposals, six marks and
a goal.
ROUnD 5 – Steel Blue Oval
Loss to Sth Fremantle 13.10 (88) to 17.10 (112)
South Fremantle opened up a match-winning
lead of 35 points by three quarter-time, and
even though Swans were able to boot five goals
to three in the final term South Fremantle was
still able to run out 24-point winners.
Roberts couldn’t have done any more to
try and inspire his team and he was terrific
finishing up with 39 possessions, six marks,
four tackles and an incredible 13 inside-50
entries. Roach had 29 possessions and Pearce
was again a good contributor with 26 disposals,
16 marks and five inside-50s. Graham Jetta
(22 possessions), Jacky (21) and Miles (20) all
worked hard in an under-siege defence, while
Ames was outstanding restricting ex-Docker
Ryan Murphy to just one goal.
Ben Colreavy, Hansen and Geappen all did
what they could up forward and kicked three
goals each. Kyle Hams had a good battle with
his twin brother Ashton as they played one
another for the first time. Swan Kyle had 17
possessions trying to curtail Ashton’s influence,
and he had 21 touches and a goal.
ROUnD 6 – Steel Blue Oval
Win over Perth 18.12 (120) to 10.11 (71)
Swan Districts put on an outstanding team
display to beat Perth by 49 points at Steel Blue
Oval in front of a good crowd on Anzac Day to
record a first win for the 2011 campaign
Swans got off to a blistering start with three
goals in the game’s opening six minutes and
then dominated the second half with 14 goals
to Perth’s five.
Roach led the way with 38 possessions and
10 marks with his run and carry too much for
Perth to be able to handle. Captain Roberts was
brilliant with 33 possessions and Fremantle’s
Pearce also had it 33 times to go with 13 marks
and a goal. Ames held the defence together
as he has all season so far and completely
blanketed former Port Adelaide centre halfforward
Damon White.
Geappen kicked five goals and Wolfenden
bounced back from being dropped last week to
be terrific in a new role up forward. Aitchison
showed as well that he deserves a regular
league spot not only collecting 23 possessions,
but restricting dangerous Demon Aaron Elari
to just 10.
ROUnD 7 – Bendigo Bank Stadium
Win over Peel thunder 16.13 (109) to 15.15
(105)
Swan Districts did it the hard way to beat
Peel Thunder at Mandurah’s Bendigo Bank
Stadium, but six goals to two in the last quarter
saw them home by four points in a thriller.
Peel dominated the third quarter with six goals
to one to lead by 26 points at the last change.
However, Swans booted five quick goals to
take the lead, but then Peel hit back to regain
the advantage. The frantic final minutes,
though, turned in the reigning premier’s
favour and Geappen kicked the winning goal.
Colreavy was brilliant all afternoon for Swan
Districts in what was likely his best game with
the club since crossing over from Claremont
at the start of the 2009 season. He booted six
goals in a career-best effort, but also racked up
26 possessions. Geappen also kicked four goals
and Hansen three. Pearce again led the way
with 28 possessions, 10 marks and four entries
inside-50. Roach had 26 disposals, six tackles
and six inside-50s. Jetta was superb with 25
disposals also as he gave the team tremendous
run. So did Jacky who finished with 23 touches
and a goal.
