The Swans District Football Development Council (SDFDC) took some great strides this year in terms of Primary Schools, Modified Rules, Senior Community, Female Football and AFL 9’s. Whilst club-based Auskick participation dropped from 1,292 to 1,208, the Swans District is starting to turn things around with several new community-based Auskick centres popping up at childcare centres, churches, schools and temples in Kalamunda, Pickering Brook, Stratton and Swan View. SCHoolS Primary School participation dipped in the Eagles Cup due to monetary and transport considerations, but this dip was balanced out by solid numbers in Eagles Faction Footy. The district is developing a Freo Dockers Shield program for schools in the hills to offset the travel costs associated with the Eagles Cup. The district is designing a district-specific school manual to pinpoint the key programs and services supplied by the Swans District. The district is also putting the final touches on a series of Primary and Secondary School PD sessions geared towards enhancing the programs delivered by AFL School Ambassadors at both Primary and Secondary Schools. The Freo Dockers Cup was one of the district’s biggest success stories with 13 teams participating in this increasingly popular school girl’s competition. The 14-team STS Cup 8/9 Boys competition went from strength to strength with Darling Range Sports College pipped at the post by Trinity College in the Quarter Finals. Whilst, the STS Cup 8/9 Girls fell short of one team, the popularity of Freo House Footy should boost our Secondary School participation in 2012. CoACHINg The district continues to strengthen its coaching stocks on the back of a series of successful coaching programs with 245 Level 1’s, 18 Level 2’s and 2 Level 3’s now coaching at junior and senior level. The district successfully piloted the Generation Y Coaching Academy, which is geared towards developing the skills and philosophies of the next generation of coaches. The district is looking to expand its suite of programs into the development of the SDFC Coaching Academy for junior and senior clubs. The district is looking forward to greeting its new coach coordinator in 2012 to host quarterly meetings and monitor our game day environment. 32 district MANAGER’S REPORT ISAAC STEWART SWAN DISTRICTS FOOTBALL CLUB 2011 ANNUAL REPORT & YEARBOOK ClUBS The district benefited from a surge in the number of modified teams in 2011, due to the growth of several clubs including Mt Helena JFC, Parkerville JFC and Swan View JFC. The number of youth teams declined due to the loss of teams at Forrestfield JFC, Midvale JFC and Upper Swan JFC. But, it wasn’t all doom and gloom with Darlington/Parkerville JFC introducing a new 17’s side to strengthen an already strong 17’s competition. The district is devising several strategies to boost participation in the youth segment including possible linkages to AFL 9’s and greater multicultural engagement. It was a momentous year for the senior clubs with Wundowie FC being installed in the Hills Football Association (HFA) and the WAAFL continuing its impressive expansion. It promises to be bigger and better in 2012 with the potential birth of a new club in Parkerville and the expansion of Forrestfield JFC into WAAFL Colts. High Wycombe FC continues to build on the success of Integrated Football with the special needs program now gaining more traction in the media and the broader community. The profile of the Quality Club Program continued to grow with 14 clubs reaping the benefits of reaching Bronze, Silver and Gold Level. Chidlow JFC, Chittering JFC, Forrestfield JFC, Mazenod JFC, Mt Helena JFC, Mundaring FC, Parkerville JFC, Pickering Brook FC and Swan View JFC all attained Bronze Level status in 2011. Whilst Upper Swan JFC was the first to make it to Silver Level, SDFC has set the benchmark for the rest of the district with Gold Level. The district placed a bigger focus on club development this year with strategic planning seminars being held at more than 12 clubs. The development of a strategic plan is a key part of Silver Level in the Quality Club Program. The district is planning to schedule a Club Development Night in May to provide education to your office bearers on several subjects including cultural awareness, local government relationships and social networking. UMPiRES The Swans District Junior Umpires Association (SDJFUA) has retained a strong core of highly skilled umpires despite the overall decrease in umpiring numbers. Whilst a solution to the decreased umpiring numbers remains elusive, some solace can be taken from the fact that 7 new green shirts joined the umpiring pool together with the recruitment of 40 new club umpires through the piloting of the Parent Umpire Program. In 2012, the district is planning to develop a series of club-based satellite programs to filter more umpires down to the SDFJUA and reverse this downward trend in umpiring numbers. nEW MARKEtS The Swans District is leading the way in terms of the development of community programs for Indigenous boys and girls. The district in partnership with V Swans successfully completed two programs in 2011, the Maali Academy and the Yorga’s Academy. The Maali Academy utilised mentors from several community organisations to deliver key educational messages relating to drug, alcohol and crime awareness, health and nutrition and
espect for women and the community. The programs saw more than 60 males and females, aged 9 to 18 register to play in the Swans District Junior Competition and the Swans District Youth Girls Competition. The district also developed a special needs Auskick program for males and females with down syndrome and sustained brain injuries to promote greater accessibility to football for the disabled community. The district will continue to support the expansion of the Integrated Football Program at High Wycombe FC in 2012. AFl 9’s Participation in our newest segment increased dramatically in 2011 with more than 120 kids participating in the AFL 9’s Swan Valley Cup at Baskerville Reserve and it looks set to continue its meteoric rise in 2012 with several new programs being developed for Female Football and Senior Community.
