Participant, Pan-REU Workshop held at the National Science Foundation
Participants discussed, in conjunction with NSF program officers, the
impacts, logistics and assessment practices of the Research Experience
for Undergraduates Program (REU). A summary statement was
prepared for NSF, suggesting innovations, modifications and successful
practices. The workshop also sponsored a poster session on Capital Hill
highlighting the diversity and importance of the REU program to
Congressional representatives and aids.
Director, NSF REU Site: Collaborative Research in the Chemical Sciences
This program exposes thirty (ten per summer) undergraduates from
primarily non-PhD granting institutions to collaborative research
environments at the University of Arizona, in order to initiate or
develop aspirations to pursue scientific careers. In addition to research,
the program provides training in ethics, scientific communication and
the admission process for graduate school. The recruiting focus is
toward talented female and underrepresented minority physical science
students. Each participant is assigned to a faculty and student mentor,
thus involving ten departmental laboratories and twenty mentors each
summer.
