1.13 Urban Design Studio 1 (7 ECTS)Faced with a concrete problem, the student dealswith urban treatment, analytical data processingand presentation on a designated urban model. Thesubject is adapted to the challenges from practicalwork and includes forms of urban space, which is theconsequence of actual dynamics of the society. Whileworking on the project, the student learns to recogniseand implement the essential operative instrumentsin the process of development strategy of thedesignated urban model. The treatment is introducedon the scale of the selected building island.2.1 History and Theory of Urbanism (5 ECTS)History as dialectics of cyclic traversing fromprogressive to cultural to naturalist models of urbanism(according to Francoise Choay), in the context ofdevelopment and co-effects of social, economic andtechnological conditions, and parallel, an overview oftechnological, sociological and biological city system,and parallel, a development of theories and planningmethods, and parallel, an overview of the forms ofphysical structures of cities: strip, net, star.2.2 Project Management and Control in Urbanism(4 ECTS)Defining project management as a process. Learningthe basics of individual phases: defining the project,organisation of the project, performing and completingthe project and monitoring (wholesome control ofchanges). An overview of important tools for controland urban design quality stimulation (quantitativeand qualitative standards and criteria) and theiruse in project engineering practice. A display ofexamples of good practice: wholesome approach tocity arrangement (planning processes of successfulEuropean cities, formal and informal planningdocumentation); managing processes of urbanregeneration (selection of successful examples fromCentral and Western Europe); managing preparationsand realisation of spatial documentation: innovativeapproach (selection of examples from Slovenia andabroad).2.3 Urban Sociology (3 ECTS)Social character, spatial significance and functions.The roots and reasons for the emergence of spatialsociology; location and accessibility in space; publicopinion concerning spatial phenomena; developmentof information and communication technologies andtheir effects on space; urban culture; sociologicalapproach to urban planning.2.4 Legal Foundations of Spatial Planning (4 ECTS)Students learns about the foundations of governmentsystem, law and spatial management legislation.Introduction: the foundations of the state legislationof the Republic of Slovenia; structure of law and legalresources; the foundations of material and processadministrative law. Space arrangement legislation:space and the environment; basic legal frameworkof spatial management; spatial planning; spatialmeasures; spatial development (building the structure).2.5, 2.11 Urban Design Studio 2 (10 ECTS + 7 ECTS)Faced with a concrete problem, the student dealswith urban treatment, analytical data processingand presentation on a designated urban model. Thesubject is adapted to the challenges from practicalwork and includes forms of urban space, which isthe consequence of actual dynamics of the society.While working on the project, the student learns torecognise and implement the essential operativeinstruments in the process of development strategyof the designated urban model. The treatment on thescale of selected town area is implemented. In theframework of the project the student participates aturbanistic workshop: one week intensive field-workconnected to a concrete task or urban topic on thelevel of town area. In small groups, the studentscomplete a project under the mentor’s supervision(usually in co-operation with the local community). Theworkshop is a modern method for teaching students,it is based on teamwork, it introduces the currentdevelopment in the profession, and internationalexchange of students and mentors.28 <strong>URBANISM</strong> STUDY PROGRAMMESTUDY PROGRAMME<strong>URBANISM</strong>29
