Department of DefenseBy Marion BlackburnWhile serving in the Middle East, Air Force Capt.Robert “Rob” Main ’08 knew that underestimatingthe competition could be deadly. To assure airsuperiority for aircraft carrying soldiers and supplies,he studied a market powerhouse—Wal-Mart—forstrategies on market domination.Drawing from its delivery model, this airlogistics officer and his colleagues designed aninnovative hub-and-spoke system to bring soldiersinto the region. Troops arrived and departed onschedule, ensuring the military dominated theairspace over areas in conflict.Main attributes this out-of-the-box creativity tolessons learned in East Carolina’s master’s of businessadministration program. Every class, he says, inspiredbetter solutions for his military challenges. “I haveseen immediate return on each class, in the civilianworld and in my military job,” says Main. “The MBAhelped me look past the surface of problems andexamine the core components.”
