Her second book, Is That a FriedChicken Wing, released this fall, is about weight and lifestylechoices. Ten percent <strong>of</strong> the proceeds go to the AvonFoundation for Women. A practicing physician in suburbanWashington, D.C., she spends much <strong>of</strong> her time traveling thecountry speaking on issues like AIDS/HIV, women’s healthand health literacy. She is the executive director <strong>of</strong> TheCOSHAR Foundation, a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it committed to healthoutreach and education. “I want to provide useful, practical,relevant health messages in simple terms that everyone canunderstand,” she said.Judy Marlowe Stead’70 wrote andillustrated The TwelveDays <strong>of</strong> Christmas inNorth <strong>Carolina</strong>, one ina series <strong>of</strong> such booksby Sterlin Publishingon each state. In each,a cousin from anotherstate visits the in-statecousin over Christmasvacation, and theyvisit as many places<strong>of</strong> interest as theypossibly can. In Stead’sbook about North<strong>Carolina</strong>, the kids travel from the mountains to the OuterBanks visiting the zoo in Asheboro, the hot air balloon festivalin Statesville, and other Tar Heel events. The fact that North<strong>Carolina</strong> is such a large state presented some problems forStead: “I had to find a way to cover the distance <strong>of</strong> our longstate in 12 days, so I have a helicopter-flying mother doingthe driving,” she said.school band.
