pirate nationScholarship more than doublesThe Alumni Scholarship awarded by the <strong>East</strong><strong>Carolina</strong> Alumni Association each year willincrease in value next year from $1,000 to$2,500, a step being taken to help deservingstudents <strong>of</strong>fset the rising costs <strong>of</strong> attendingcollege. The increase takes effect with thebeginning <strong>of</strong> the 2010–2011 school year.Applicants must have a minimum cumulativeGPA <strong>of</strong> 2.7 and submit a completedapplication, a letter <strong>of</strong> recommendation (froma university <strong>of</strong>ficial, a community leader or anemployer) and an <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript. Studentsmay apply for a scholarship each year they areenrolled as a full-time, undergraduate student.Students graduating who intend to enroll atECU for graduate school may also apply foran Alumni Scholarship.So that university-based scholarships canbe awarded to a broader range <strong>of</strong> students,additional eligibility requirements have beenincorporated to the Alumni Scholarshipprogram. He received the OutstandingAlumni Award in 1998.Oldest letter winner diesWilliam Eric Tucker ’33, who was <strong>East</strong><strong>Carolina</strong>’s oldest living letter winner, diedOct. 4 in Richmond, Va., where he had livedand operated a construction business formany years. He was 97. A member <strong>of</strong> thefirst football and basketball teams organizedon campus in 1932, he was the first malegraduate science major <strong>of</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> andonly the third male to graduate in any major.A native <strong>of</strong> Winterville, he was employedin the Civilian Conservation Corps aftercollege. He entered the Army during WorldWar II and retired as a lieutenant colonel.
