D., am a farmer.I was a U. S. Scout <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e time and I then got discharged. That time was when Gen.Custer first came to Ft. Lincoln. Little Sioux, who was in here before you a few minutes ago,was in at that same time. He was in before I was. I went that time from this Reservati<strong>on</strong>, wental<strong>on</strong>e by boat down the Missouri River to Fort A. Lincoln, where I was sworn in, given uniform,gun, horse. I was in the service 6 mo. Bloody-Knife was my chief Scout and directly over me.He could not speak English. He was killed while a Scout. He was killed just a few days after Ileft.A white man called the roll of the <strong>Scouts</strong> morning and evening. A Sioux who could speakEnglish told Bloody Knife when my name came and Bloody Knife, who understood Sioux, toldme and I answered.Q. What was the name called when you answered? A. Sore Elk Forehead (This witnessgives this sound which, the nearest I can get it, is represented in English by the sound shown[in] this word: Wah-neegah-go-ah. My present interpreter gives it thus: War-negar-go-art. –EWY, Inspector). That was the name he always called in calling the roll, for me.I did scouting about Fort A. Lincoln while I was in the service. I never went up the riverto the Powder Horn or up that way; but I did go <strong>on</strong> the expediti<strong>on</strong> to the Black Halls, underGeneral Custer. Little Sioux was with us <strong>on</strong> that trip.
