The sketchesfor the Palais Stoclet, which was constructed byJosef Hoffmann, will be go on show in 2012. It isthe only Art Nouveau “Gesamtkunstwerk” or “totalwork of art” ever completed. Countless Viennabasedartists were involved in its design alongsideKlimt and Hoffmann. Only the most precious materialswere used in its construction, and it was addedto the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2009.The MAK also owns the full archive of the WienerWerkstätte, which was founded in 1903. TheWiener Werkstätte initiated design changes in manydifferent genres. Jewelry, furniture and textiledesigns were adapted to meet everyday requirements,but with an emphasis on craftsmanship andthe use of premium materials. The archive, donatedto the museum in 1955 by its previous owner, comprisessome 16,000 design drawings, including5,500 by Josef Hoffmann, and around 20,000 fabricsamples, posters, postcard designs, model books,photo albums and business correspondence.The MAK is the custodian of the largest museumcollection of Wiener Werkstätte objects, coveringthe entire creative period until the closure of theWiener Werkstätte in 1932 in the aftermath of theglobal financial crisis. It also owns the most comprehensiverange of furniture, objects and designsby Josef Hoffmann in the world. BurgtheaterIn the late 1990s a scroll was discovered in theattic of the Burgtheater containing draft sketches(socalled cartoons) by Gustav Klimt for the ceilingpaintings of the famous grand staircase. In 1886the “Künstler Compagnie” (Gustav and Ernst Klimt,and Franz Matsch) received a commission to completethese ceiling paintings. Widely credited as theoutstanding works from Klimt’s early period, theyheralded the change to the symbolistic phase ofturn of the century Vienna.These priceless preliminary sketches, including theartist’s only self-portrait, were rescued and restored.Four out of the ten ceiling paintings at the Burgtheaterwere completed by Klimt. Four templatecartoons have been on permanent display in ase parate “Klimt room” (Angelika Prokopp Foyer) inthe Burgtheater since 2009.
