MAN Diesel & TurboThe responsible way in leading technologyMAN Diesel & Turbo is the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of low andmedium speed engines. Our involvement with electrical power generators goesback to 1904 when we supplied the first ever diesel generator sets to the Kiev TramSystem.Since those early days, MAN Diesel & Turbo has never lost its technological preeminencein the large engine field. Likewise, our engines have never relinquishedtheir status as the most efficient combustion engines available.More than ever before, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s development focus is on the environmentalperformance of our engines. Using our unrivalled grasp of large enginetechnology, we aim to make our engines progressively cleaner, more powerful andmore efficient. With our firm commitment to reducing emissions while increasing fuel efficiencyand power density, and with our active partnership with environmental institutionsand development banks, we intend to be part of the global emissions solution.48/60 – Four-stroke diesel engine3

Our Best-Selling Engine48/60A Top PerformerBoth economical and environmentally friendly, the 48/60 is a prime mover in thetruest sense. With a power output range of 9,450 to 18,900 kW, this reliable, highoutputengine is the four-stroke heart of medium and large diesel power plants theworld over.Reliable power outputRugged engine blockThe 48/60 engine can be run on heavy oil with a The engine is housed in a rigid monobloc frame, viscosity up to 700 mm 2 /s (cSt) at 50°C. It is designed further strengthened by continuous tie rods. Thesefor fuel qualities up to the levels specified in CIMAC run from the underslung main bearing to the top edge2003 H/K700/DIN ISO 8217. In fact, the engine is of the engine frame, and from the cylinder headcapable of continuous operation on heavy oil in an through the intermediate plate.output range of 20 per cent to 100 per cent. For briefperiods, it can even operate below 20 per cent. Cylinder liner with fire ringThe thick-walled design provides high resistanceFor engines driving a generator, in accordance with to deformation, preventing cavitation. This leads toDIN ISO 8528-1, a 10 per cent overload is allowed for better piston performance and a longer service life.a brief period for governing purpose (e. g. suddenly Cooling at the top of the liner ensures uniform temperaturedistribution over the entire applied load) to prevent frequency drop.surface.Stepped pistonThe forged dimensionally stable steel crown (withshaker cooling) is made from high-grade materials, while the skirt is constructed from spheroidal graphitecast iron (skirt also available in steel upon request), toprovide superior durability. Both the stepped piston and fire ring prevent combustionresidue accumulating on the piston crownand cylinder liner. In combination with chromiumceramic coating of the first piston ring and chromiumcoating of the second and third piston rings, thisminimises wear of the cylinder liner and reduceslubricating oil consumption.Cylinder head and durable valvesDesigned for safe, high ignition pressures, the cylinderhead is equipped with effective bore cooling. Allvalves are armoured to reduce wear, and the exhaustvalve seats are water-cooled. The exhaust valveshave an exhaust-driven rotor, while the inlet valvesare rotated using rotocaps, keeping the valve seatclean.Sophisticated fuel injectionHigh-pressure injection with improved atomisationensures good combustion with any fuel quality. Theinjection system has been designed for lower fuelconsumption and lower emissions.Connecting rod and bearingThe marine head design, with a joint in the uppershaft, allows piston overhaul without removal of theconnecting rod bearing. A low piston height alsomakes overhaul easier. Optimised bearing shells inthe connecting rod increase reliability.Improved designTo make the 48/60 even better, the design has beenenhanced. Improvements include better combustionchamber geometry, a higher density ratio, and moreaccurate injection and valve timing. All of these featuresreduce fuel consumption and improve ignition, even with poor fuel qualities.4 48/60 – Four-stroke diesel engine 48/60 – Four-stroke diesel engine 5

48/60 Technical DataOverviewTop turbochargersThe constant pressure turbocharging system usesstate-of-the-art MAN Diesel & Turbo TCA series turbochargers, with long-bearing overhaul intervals. Theirhigh efficiency at full and part loads ensures thoroughcombustion with low thermal stress and no residue.48/60 V-engines are charged by a single TCA turbocharger, with the advantage that the cylinders sharea single exhaust line. A new turbocharger modulewith integrated intercoolers significantly reduces theengine centres between two adjacent V-engines.Service-friendly designA number of features make servicing the 48/60 easy:• Hydraulic tools for tightening and loosening cylinderhead nuts, and for the crankshaft and big-endbearings;• Clamps with quick-release fasteners and/or clampand plug connectors;• Generously sized access covers;• A practically maintenance-free sleeve spring vibrationdamper.SaCoS for enhanced safetyOn request, all MAN Diesel & Turbo medium-speedengines, including the L48/60, can be equipped withthe SaCoS safety and control system. This system istested at the factory together with the engine, makingfine tuning and functional testing easier andsmoother when the power unit is commissioned.Low exhaust emissionsAs with all MAN Diesel & Turbo engines, 48/60 enginescomply with World Bank guidelines for exhaustemissions. Even lower NO X emissions can beachieved to fulfil worldwide emission standards forspecific plants. For example, engines can be equipped with MAN’sadvanced selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. The more thorough the combustion, the lower theparticle emissions. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s highly efficientengines produce particle emission rates wellbelow the World Bank guidelines, provided that fuelwith low ash content is used.Engine cycle:four-strokeTurbocharging system: constant-pressureNumber of cylindersIn-line engine: 9V-engine: 12, 14, 18Bore:480 mmStroke:600 mmSwept volume per cyl.: 108.6 dm 3Cylinder output (MCR)at 514 rpm:1,050 kWat 500 rpm:1,050 kWCoolingCylinder cooling:cooling waterCharge-air cooler (two-stage): fresh waterFuel injector cooling: fresh waterStarting methodcompressed airEmissionsThe engines comply with the World Bankguidelines for thermal power plants.General definition of diesel engine ratings accordingto ISO 30461/1-2002Ambient conditions according to ISO 3046-1:2002The stated consumption figures refer to the followingreference conditions according to ISO 3046-1:• Ambient air pressure: 1,000 mbar• Ambient air temperature: 25°C (77°F)• Charge air temperature: According to engine type, corresponding to 25°C cooling water temperaturebefore charge air cooler. The SFOC figures for engines in diesel operation are based on alower calorific value of the fuel of 42,700 kJ/kg.Figures are given with a tolerance of 5 per cent, except for the lubricatingoil consumption, which is given with a tolerance of 20 per cent.6 48/60 – Four-stroke diesel engine 48/60 – Four-stroke diesel engine 7
