International Road FederationThe IRF Greenhouse Gas CalculatorEnvironmental BenefitsSustainable roads can only be built by practitioners who arefully aware of the environmental impacts of their activities,as well as the possibilities for reducing this impact. The newIRF GHG Calculator will enable this.ContactThe tool is based on an input/output modelling approach. The calculation model is composed of a simple set ofequations and enables estimating the total GHG emissions(outputs) generated by each of the identified and quantifiedemission sources (inputs). The calculations undertaken referto the full life-cycle of the road infrastructure and arerepeated for different scenarios and different constructiontechniques. Three basic phases can be identified:preconstruction, road construction and road maintenance.Among the data collected, distinctions are drawn betweenSusanna ZammataroDeputy Director GeneralEnvironment ExpertInternational Road Federation2 chemin de Blandonnet1214 Vernier /Geneva, SwitzerlandTel. +41 22 306 02 60Fax +41 22 306 02 70szammataro@irfnet.orgScheme for Materials Transport- The inventory of the emissions sources;- Data and standards relative to the evaluation of these emissions sources;- The database of emissions factors pertaining to the set of identified sources. The calculator's output provides an incentive for innovation and advancement of current construction practices, aiming atreducing emissions and generating corporate economies. In particular, it will help to identify intensive energy consumptionpractices that can be replaced by more energy-efficient techniques and technologies. The IRF would like to thank its technical partners for their valued assistance in the development of the Greenhouse Gascalculator: 3M, Ammann Group, COLAS, EPFL, Scott Wilson, Volkmann & Rossbach.International Road Federation Innovative Practices for Greener Roads Back to Table of Contents I 28
